a bit of a generalization I think - neither applies to me

Come on. What Dewey was saying was obvious: this is the third time we've heard a major trade justified with the old canard 'Don't worry we can resign him as a FA after the season.' And if Bogey were traded, we'd doubtless hear it again.

So?

It will always be true. Teams can re-sign any player they deal away, Just because it didn’t happen in 3 instances spanning 8 years don’t make it less true. It does at best make it less likely, but that was always the case when the Sox are but one of 30 potential teams.

One reason it usually doesn’t happen is the team - not the player - has no interest in a reunion, and never makes an offer. I suspect that will happen with Vazquez.

But again - keeping Bogaerts changes that, doesn’t it?

1. Fans did assume they could have re-signed Lester after the trade and the Sox probably still could have.

2. When Mookie was traded, it was over. Anyone who thought otherwise was fooling themselves.

3. The Vazquez trade is not even comparable to the previous two. It's not a major trade at all. He was a good player, but not even in the conversation as the other guys. C'mon.

Ah, the inevitable squirrel! Those three points are true but that wasn't the topic at hand. The topic at hand was that when an impact player gets traded someone pops up and says, "Don't worry. We can always re-sign him later".

I would never say that couldn't happen but IMO the chances of that happening are about the same as the Sox trading Bogaerts and knocking on my door to take his place.

Vaz is NOT an impact player.

Then we have a difference of opinion. Notice I didn't say All-star.

I'm afraid it's now incumbent on you to provide a definition of impact player. :)

Panda was an impact player, the time his belt broke and he belly-flopped off the infield dirt. Grounds crew is still waiting for him to replace his own divet.

But with Mookie, it was also the only way to keep him, despite a long shot. Ownership wanted to reset, which was next to impossible with Mookie and Price on the roster.

The thoughts weren’t that the Sox could simply do it. The thought process was, there was no other way. Especially amidst the buzz about his desire to be a free agent…

All those panda hats they had to write off and send to a third world country...

Christian Vázquez wanted to soak up one last BP session in a Red Sox uniform after learning he had been traded. Alex Cora obliged.

"He asked me, ‘Hey, can I go take batting practice?’ I said, ‘Of course, you’re part of the family.’"

When Vázquez emerged for an awkward batting practice session that doubled as his final act as a Red Sox uniform, he knew his 14-year run in the organization had come to an end. The Red Sox -- contrary to how it looked as it played out -- weren’t hanging Vázquez out to dry.

I don't believe that for one minute. The look on vaz's face said it all.

Christian Vázquez said the door is open for him to return to the Red Sox in free agency this winter.

Sound like the Sox really screwed Vaz over!

Once we trade them, they never come back.

Lester and Betts didn’t so he is not allowed to.

One would think Vaz had some inklings about being traded. It was rumored for a while, and they added Hernandez to the roster just in case, didn't they?

This whole mistreating Vaz thing is what posters bash the media for doing.

I don’t believe there was anyone from the Red Sox front office in Houston. A Mickey Mouse operation at best.

Other accounts now circulating say that Vaz had a pretty sure idea via AC that he was going to Houston. He apparently asked Ac to take a last BP with the Sox. It was late in the day but not quite the PR blunder that it was made out to be.

Abreu seems like the prize of the trade - though both guys are interesting.

Both jumped in the rankings, this summer, but who knows?

Yeah, it's the trade deadline. Shouldn't they be worried about making deals rather than just travelling with the team.

The problem with rankings (well one of many) is that they're static. When Mookie Betts was one of the top prospects in the game he wasn't on anyone's top 100 until they came out with updated lists. WHich is typically once a year and then mid-season. A lot of these prospects we pulled in had some helium.....would of been nice to flip something for a reliever.

I won't overthink the rankings. But Abreu has a cannon arm in RF and while there is a very wide range of outcomes - a solid starting RF outcome is certainly possible, and that would be a win for renting out Vazquez. The other dude has been so productive that you can't ignore it - but Marwin Gonzalez feels like a high end outcome.

So Bloom couldn’t talk on the phone from Houston? Sounds like anther excuse to me.As Lou Merloni said that was pretty much unheard of.
