Joely Rodriguez is a 31 year old ham and egger with a career ERA of 4.56. Probably more bottle cap than buried treasure.

can get lefties out, something I believe they struggled with last year.

What calendar year did the Boston Red Sox trade him in?

2021, one of only 2 years (and counting) that did not occur PRIOR TO 2021…

Posted
Is he an upgrade? You can find plenty of guys on the side of the road in Florida at the end of March as good as him who are looking to hitch a ride north.

Upgrade? Over Diekman, probably…

I really doubt this is the only bullpen move, even if they decide to keep Whitlock in the bullpen full time…

exactly, smaller moves come first, because they're much easier to make. How many people are bidding on Rodriguez vs. Bogaerts and Correa? If you're their agents you're telling them to hold off....they want to speak to everyone and drive up the price. It's almost smart to make these smaller moves first but you know how fans get. They expect all the big moves up front otherwise it's just more "dumpster diving"

I guess the FO is concerned about being buried in paperwork if they leave these Dollar Store acquisitions until later in the offseason when we are making consequential signings. An acquisition like this could distract Bloom from deciding whether to pursue Bogey, Swanson or Correa.

We an use him when 3 lefties are coming up.

I’m sorry, do teams not try to get tough lefties out anymore. He’s not horrible against righties either. Teams don’t hit him hard he just sucks with control. You know how it goes. You tweak a thing with these guys and things can change, strike gold like Andrew Miller. For 1 million maybe the Sox thought he was worth it if they see something in him they can tweak.

Is this a serious comment?

No, it's 70,000 posts of him doing a bit.

Because I’ve never heard the suggestion that teams can’t focus on more than one deal at once, like they don’t have a domestic reserve list of 180 players to maintain.

Joely will be on the 40 man though. Crook will be further down on the reserve list.

Yes, they have to build a team. Yes, a700 knows this.

Even Dave Dombrowski signed guys like Ryan LaMare, Brennan Boesch and Anthony Varvaro…

I get people don’t like Bloom, but it’s absurd when every move gets scrutinized like this. Like the Sox can not and should not make any moves until the fix everything at the top. Love him or hate him that’s not how this works.

It is funny how people get so twisted over any criticism of Bloom’s moves.

I think it’s funny how people get all hot and bothered over every tiny move. There are others bothered right now because the Sox Signed a minor leaguer.

Like….you realize Bello is going to be a good MLB pitcher (finally) someone has to catch his fly balls and field his grounders in the minors coming up.

If you can’t stand the heat of the Big Bad Boston Media, and parts of Red Sox Nation then you probably shouldn’t have come to Boston in the first place. Tampa is Disney World compared to Boston.

I mean look, if these are the only types of moves Bloom makes and he doesn’t sign another relieve or two (one of them being reliable and proven) a couple proven starter, and Star SS I’ll stand with all the Bloom haters calling for his head.

But I expect those moves to be made, which is why I don’t mind and dare I say I like low risk high reward at the bottom of the roster like this.

Who says he can’t stand the heat? Here is apparently still making moves pissing off the base on November 23rd

People thought there was a chance he'd be nontendered only because people in the media had mentioned it. The trade was a bad trade. The vast majority of posters hated it from day one. I really can't think of anyone who said it was a brilliant move and that Hunter would bust.

I know there were some posters who mentioned the idea that he could be non-tendered, but I don't recall anyone saying he should or will be.

Several felt it a good idea to trade him, but nobody liked the JBJ trade, except maybe Kimmi.

notin liked it, and I was OK with it. I hoped Bloom was right about JBJ bouncing back.

I guess it depends what you call bouncing back. He did up his Ave by 40, and his OPS by 80, but his Gold Glove kind of D was never going to make up for Renfroe’s production especially his 96 RBI. Bad move to begin with, and a bad deal at the end.

I think he was listed somewhere as a NT candidate so some people caught it stuck in their heads he wasn't that good. He's a good but not great player, JBJ's continued regression and the prospects sucking made it look really really bad. Bloom has received a lot of unjust criticism around here and in Boston.....But this trade is not part of that.

I've been one of Blooms biggest supporters, but that trade was awful from day one. This isn't hindsight positions, either, I hated the deal from the start. The money part was the worst, as we were walking the tax line, at the time. I said it then, the deal would only work, if one of the prospects came through. That may still happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

If it was about the defense, we could have just moved Dugo to RF and parked Renfroe in LF, but this whole false hope that JBJ would return to form was misplaced, and this is from a Sox fan who had JBJ as his favorite player since he was called up.

One thing many of the Bloom bashers never bring up is the Renfroe signing, to begin with. IMO, it was made with the savings from the Beni trade- another trade Bloom was and still is being bashed over.

Exactly. If this guy was worse than the players we are about to DFA or trade to make room for more additions, then it would be a head-scratcher.

I don't recall anyone being happy with the Strahm signing or the Schreiber claim, at the time.

I hoped he might hit like he did in 2020, I admit it. I generally err on the side of optimism LOL

It was a nothing move and the guy stinks. I called the move for what it is. I didn’t pass judgment on the entire off season. Calm down.

This is the process of building a roster.

Hahaha, I have to admit, this one really made me laugh a little touché.
