Wow, that seems awfully similar to the same reason that the Sox had to dump Renfroe in December 2021: Boston is a SMALL MARKET TEAM with MULTIPLE MLB-READY PROSPECTS that play his position.

Evidence for Boston being a small market team: fans can't stop worrying about their owner's checkbook, team forced to cut salary in recent years, reset reset reset.

Evidence for Boston having multiple prospects/replacements to take over for Hunter: Cordero 275 PA in 2022, Duran 223 PA in 2022, Refsnyder 177 PA in 2022.

Evidence for this post being sarcastic: my previous 54,000+ posts.

I agree with this post, except you forgot the lefty-righty platoon plan of JBJ.2 and Christian Arroyo, the Luis Garcia of dancing rightfielders. Also, before the season, Cora said JD would be playing more outfield. So we were all set.

It's not Bloom's fault they all somehow underperformed..........................................................................................

They pulled the plug on the ArRFoyo experiment too soon!

It has always been amazing to me that a player like Renfroe coming off a 96 RBI season that so many thought he was not worth a $7M contract in arbitration. While he was no gold glover he was no butcher out there either. The placement JBJ while a gold glove could not hit a lick, and Bloom traded Renfroe for him at a higher salary to boot. A real head scratcher as some would say. To me I was all for trading Renfroe, but not for JBJ, and now I would say that a little 2 yr $18M-$20M contract for Renfroe would have made the Red Sox better off, and made more sense.

Sarcasm aside, Milwaukee still unloaded him for the exact reasons I stated. And actually, so did Tampa..

Renfroe had 2 arb years left when we traded him. How would it make sense to overpay him for 2 years?

Also, who were the people saying Renfroe was not worth the $7M arb? I don't recall any. I do remember people saying we need to subtract that $7.6M from JBJ's money, but I don't remember anyone saying he wasnt worth $7M.

He had 12 errors in RF for the Red Sox. By old school standards that's NOT GOOD! That is worse than a prorated Wily Mo Pena 2006 Season.

Not to mention, who cares if anyone said it? Not like Bloom reads web forums for his player valuations…

People thought there was a chance he'd be nontendered only because people in the media had mentioned it. The trade was a bad trade. The vast majority of posters hated it from day one. I really can't think of anyone who said it was a brilliant move and that Hunter would bust.

He's an upgrade over Braiser, and a lefty who can get leftys out. It's not the sexiest move.

Who can't they only sign All Stars?

He really struggled with RF at Fenway. But he could cover up quite a few defensive shortcomings with that arm.

His lack of versatility didn’t help much either. Cora had to use him in CF a few times (not Renfroe’s fault) and it really wasn’t good…

I only looked at Renfroe's RF numbers.

Just for housekeeping, we still have Brasier.

You do realize in the original post you said prior to 2021. Right?

“Siri, what team did Hunter Renfroe play got in /021?”

“No, Siri, the other Hunter Renfroe!”

What calendar year did the Boston Red Sox trade him in?

Wasn’t a lot of them throwing errors? At any rate don’t the Red Sox have to get someone to play RF now, and pay them, and JBJ who isn’t on the team? More costly, and not much sense to me.

I was responding to the "he wasn't a butcher" remark.

Yes, they need to get someone. They probably should have just kept Renfroe and let him go year to year in arbitration. It would have worked out better for them.

Maybe they sign Conforto?

Is he an upgrade? You can find plenty of guys on the side of the road in Florida at the end of March as good as him who are looking to hitch a ride north.

Dear god you're correct lol. Why did I think we released him? I think it's because I've got it into my mind we are going to release him or trade him at some point this offseason.

People forget how volatile bullpen arms are. Like REALLY volatile, I remember in 2021 at the deadline everyone was pissed we signed Robles and Davis. Now they didn't exactly light the world on fire but they were acquired for almost nothing and both performed significantly better in Boston than they did earlier that year. Rodriguez has some nice swing and miss stuff but not the best results. Teams make moves like this all the time because they see something in a guy they think they can tweak.

See my comment above, I hate it if it's their only bullpen move. If they're adding other names and they are taking Rodriguez because they see something in him I don't hate it. To reiterate my point you know how volatile these bullpen guys are. For a million beans? who cares.

True, and we all know the defense is why we traded him- not the money.

His CF numbers were too small to draw from, but he really lacked the range…

He was traded to upgrade defense. Some theories involve including Seiya Suzuki in that defense…

I really doubt this is the only bullpen move, even if they decide to keep Whitlock in the bullpen full time…

That was my theory, and well.....that hasn't worked out great so far.

That's ok by me, as long as Sam Kennedy's driving a UHaul.
