Well, Roger did deserve some level of criticism:

1986-1992

160 ERA+/1.09 WHIP/3.44 K/BB

1993-1996- NO SMALL SAMPLE SIZE!

130 ERA+/1.29 WHIP/2.36 K/BB

Had he only started using steroids, earlier, he may have retired a Red Sox.

But Buckley criticized him for things like throwing a bag of hot dog rolls…

The young players at the time were:

Vaughn

Quantril

Ken Ryan

Cooper

Plantier

Naehring

Valentin

Wedge

Flaherty

Zupcic

The pitching in the upper minors was absolute garbage for the Sox around then. Of those guys, the only legitimate future "star" was Mo. Valentin, Cooper and Plantier were kinda bunched together further below him and none of them were really seen as guaranteed MLB starters. As it turned out, the most unheralded guy, Valentin, had the best career out of the three.

You left out the most overhyped one of all - Vaughn’s college teammate Kevin Morton. And he lived up to the hype for exactly one game…

Casas is the scariest .151 hitter in the game. Kid's got power!

not a bad glove either. let's hope that he is the real deal.

He's up to .179, but with the 14 BBs, his OBP is a decent .343.

It's interesting to see our OBP leaders, so far...

Needless to say this team badly needs an injection of young talent. Casas and Bello are giving some hopeful signs.

Yes, both already look better than all of the mostly fill-ins that have been picked up or brought up, at least this season.

They are two building blocks. Casas looks like a future middle-of-the-order bat, and is definitely a legit first baseman (forget sample sizes when looking at defense; the plays he's making aren't luck). Bello has ace stuff, and apparently the determination and poise to develop it; no way he is just a #5 next year, like some posters are guessing.

Casas reminds me of a lefty Jose Canseco. Just a total hulk of a human being. His HR totals as he ages will be massive. His K rates likely will be as well. He is someone you set and forget at 1b. Let him struggle at the big league level and reap the rewards when the sox are ready to rise again

Bello’s stuff isn’t likely to be the biggest factor in determining his place in the rotation; it’s his IP limit. Counting two minor league levels, he’d thrown about 150 IP this year, which is already 30 IP more than his previous career high. He’s not going to be penciled in for 180 IP next year…

I would call McGuire more than a "fill-in." Like him or not, he will likely be our FT catcher in 2023 with Wong as the back-up.

If we don't add an OF'er or DH, Pham may be the starting LF'er and Pham, Wong & Hosmer the DHs.

Casas appears more advanced then I surmised. He could well be are starting first baseman out of 2023 spring training. He has a better glove than Dalbec and a much better glove than Cordero. and has better plate discipline than any of our current options. Maybe we will make adjustments to our 40 man accordingly. No doubt he will have his struggles, as they all do but it does provide some hope for 2023 and beyond.

Pham is a free agent and is probably gone. He has a team option but not one that should be exercised.

The Sox already have two outfielders in the gold for next season. I’m hoping they can fill out the OF with Brandon Nimmo.

Of course Bloom might go and trade Verdugo just like he did Renffoe and Benintendi before him…

If we sign a guy like Nimmo, I think we turn down Pham's $6M option and pay him $1.5M, assumi ng he turns down the mutual option, too. The difference is $4.5M, and he would not be a bad 5th OF'er as I figure ref might be the #4. One other option is to use Pham or Ref as a DH or platoon DH, but I agree, we don't need ref and Pham.

If we don't add an OF'er, I'd keep Pham:

LF: Dugo & Pham

CF: Kike

RF: Dugo & Ref

Nice for a change, isn't it?

Love the power, but his patience and eye impress me more, especially when you figure rookies rarely get ump calls in their favor.

When we consider Duran and Downs didn't live up to ML standards, we may have the real thing with Casas.

Downs isn't living up to AAA standards either.

Casas had a hit and two walks. One for two. Continues to be encouraging.

Overall, he has a 131 wRC+ and a 803 OPS.

Last 50 Plate Appearances (Since 9/13):

243 AVG

440 OBP

568 SLG

1008 OPS

183 wRC+

4 HR

8 R

8 RBI

26 BB%

18 K%

208 BABIP

wOBA - Shift: 306

16 BBs in just 74 PAs is a nice start. While 17Ks is not ideal, it's not that bad either.

It's strange that he has no doubles, yet- just 5 HRs for 5 XBHs.

If he can stay near .365 for an OBP and hit 5 Hrs every 75 PAs, he'll be a huge plus, no matter what his BA of K% is.
