I don't think they withdrew the offer. It was refused, the Sox knew they would not go higher, and they traded him.

Correct

I don't see where DD's position was different from others and that it caused his departure.

I believe that he wanted to resign all of them they were his boys and he just pushed too hard. No other reason to get rid of him he just won a world series

Sale was his "boy." The others were here before DD.

IMO, DD wanted Betts, but he set a price that all agreed on, and when they knew he wouldn't take it, the plan was to trade him, even before Bloom took over.

I don't see how this led to DD's firing.

If JH wanted Betts signed over Sale, he would not have allowed the Sale signing.

If JH wanted to offer more, but JH said no, why would that be grounds for firing, unless DD called JH a dick or something.

Then why, and don’t say to rebuild the farm, because he could have done that too

Yes, when he was let go and bloom took over contract talks with him the remarks that Mookie made to the press would point in that direction mostly about the Sox telling him it’s a business and that’s the bottom line, so after hearing that, the hometown discount went out the window, and he was traded within days

No.

Betts refused $300mill over 10 years. When DD realized he was not going to sign Betts, he used that money to extend Bogaerts and Sale.

Bloom never negotiated with Betts. By the time Bloom was hired, the payroll was spray close to its max…

IMO, he was let go, because he is not an expert at building up the farm, and that was the plan after going all out from 2016-2019.

Sale was signed first, I’m sure he was negotiating with multiple players, when Betts refused offer then Bogarts was signed, and Betts talks carried into the season with Bloom being the last to negotiate with him

These are pros they all know how to draft, and claim players off the wire anyone of them could stock up a farm if ownership wants that. Remember he was fired in the middle of the season (September) winter would be the time to do that for that reason

Mookie signed for 365million And Bloom did negotiate with him in 2019 the Sox were not total *******s about the luxury tax yet

So what made them become *******s?

I didn’t mean to say they were *******s just their approach to the lux tax, they always tried to stay under it, Betts highest yearly earnings since being with the Dodgers is $27 million they got creative with his contract and the years, he’s was making $20 in 2019 for 7 million more he could still be here

The problem with a 12 year contract, though, is the last half of it.

I know that and I don’t even like 10 year contracts but for a once in a generation player sometimes you have to make exceptions

Well, I certainly wasn't happy to see Betts go.

I’ve never heard anyone say they were happy he’s gone, heard a lot of thank you’s from the Dodgers though

As far as the Eovaldi contract goes, I still don't think it was a terrible signing. Some people say it was all about the World Series. But he did have an fWAR of 2.2 in 2018 in 111 innings. fWAR's of 3.3 and 3.2 in previous seasons. 5.7 in 2021. He's capable of pitching at a high level. Obviously he hasn't fulfilled his potential, mainly due to injuries.

Rumors came out that Dombrowski had kind of cut himself off from the rest of the organization, other than a couple of close allies, that there was no communication etc. Whether that was a cover story I don't know.

Certainly some GMs are much better at building farms and finding low cost gems than others.

DD's history is not known for quick and strong farm-building.

I think the Ben hiring was similar. They weren't in an "all-in" mindset when they hired him, too.

The pandemic might have had something to do with Mookie signing for $365M and not closer to $400M.

Yes, most people thought he wanted to test the free agent market.

That was the widely accepted thought. I've never seen any evidence to contradict this.

The Sox likely figured he'd make more as a FA than their highest offer, and decided to trade him before it got that far.

I do not think they upped the offer after Bloom joined the team, so "continuing negotiations" does not seem right, to me.

Their approach? To stay under? They usually go over the luxury tax, they reset every 2-3 years because who wouldn’t with the penalties that grow when you stay over?

Sox outspend , on average, almost every other team in baseball. So, I’m not really sure how spending more money than mostly everyone makes them *******s…..unless…..you want us to be Miami???

I can’t believe we’re still arguing Mookie Betts. This has been talked about, argued, debates, complained about over and over and over again.

Yeah, if you want the best workers, you have to pay them more than lousy workers. Sucks really. In our day, we just worked for the pure joy of it.
