Why did Whitlock start the game against the Rays? I can't remember.

Not sure but his two starts totaled 7 IP. He’s on a limit. Hopefully a limit that gets him around 100 IP…

If he is going to be a starter he will have to do that sooner or later. Being the closer would limit his innings a lot , but do nothing to help him develop as a starter. He does seem to have too much ability to be stuck in middle relief. I guess they have a plan , but it just doesn't seem clear at this point.

That’s why he probably won’t be a traditional one inning closer.

I still think they want him around 100 IP (or more?) so he can work his way to a rotation spot in 2023. It does help that the Sox have potentially 2 rotation spots opening up after this year (with potential departures in Eovaldi, Hill and Wacha but Paxton taking one back)…

The Sox have potentially five rotation spots open next year. There is not one sure starter guaranteed -- because of health, contract or performance -- to take a regular turn in the 2023 rotation. The only guarantee is that one of them will be paid $30 million either way.

It's truly amazing how many slots we have open, next winter- not just in the rotation. It's rare for teams to sync contracts like this, especially big spending teams.

SP1 Eovaldi (our clear ace over the past 2-3 years)

SP3 Wacha (pitching like an ace, now)

SP5 Hill (not off to a good start)

SS Bogey (a top 2 Sox hitter)

DH JD (a top 3 or 4 Sox hitter)

CF Kike (a top 2 defensive player and top 5 or 6 hitter)

C1 Vaz

C2 Plawecki

RP Strahm (one of our best pen arms, so far)

RP Robles (has been used as a closer for some of our games)

JBJ's option is so prohibitive, but technically, he could be gone, too.

Others like Travis Shaw might be addition by subtraction or gone before winter.

I'm sticking up for Moon, because both May and June are "before winter." But take it from me, April suuuuuuuuuuxxxx in New England right now.

Don't I know it. It's a brisk 74 right now down here. Brrr...

I predicted today would be the day they'd drop Abbott... but not for Costello.

Red Sox will make a series of moves pregame. Cordero for Shaw is one. Also expected to activate Houck and Crawford. Not sure who’s going down yet.

I like giving Franchy a shot, now.

I thought maybe Fritzy, since he can play 1B, but bye-bye Shaw.

I wasn't fair on Franchy before. I'm all for giving him a third chance in Boston. But I'd really hope his D has improved, because fielding is the minimum a bench-warmer should be able to do at the top level.

I doubt his defense improved much in a year.

So far Franchy has proved he can hit pitching in AAA, and so far he’s proved he can’t hit pitching in the Majors.

Fitzy has 24 K’s in 67 ABs.

Perhaps that’s why Cordero was chosen over him…

I doubt it. Cordero had 23 Ks in 71 ABs, so there's not much difference, there.

Maybe, they think Cordero plays a better 1B, or they just felt like he deserved another chance- maybe his last one.

Back to Starting Rotation

I did not watch today's game. I see that our catcher is pitching now.

Isn't it about time Sox do something with Pivetta? 10 day disable list? He needs to work on whatever is ailing him.

These games count. You can't let him 'work' on his game in a real game. Just a thought.

Funny thing about Bloom. He is a value junky. Pivetta's value was at peak in the offseason and he knew his up and down nature. He cashed in on Renfroe, surprised he didnt with Pivetta

Good point.....He's better at cashing in players with likely career bests.

I have no inclination paying either Xander or Devers $30M at this time. They both probably will be traded at some point.
