I think so too.

Cora is a very good manager.

Tito is the GOAT for now. 2018 was the GOAT year, but Tito is the GOAT manager.

Cora and Tito stand high above all other Sox managers in the past 5 decades.

A better discussion might be who is third.

I say Dick Williams, but I may be alone on that one.

In my lifetime, it's Jimy Williams.

No, Dick Williams would be a popular choice. His record after leaving the Red Sox adds plenty of validation.

He sure was an ornery cuss though LOL

The guy who let his 5 year old granddaughter make a lineup one time?

Or was that someone else.

So, you’d choose Dick?

Jimy's press conferences were the best. He answered most questions about an upcoming game this way: "We'll go play."

He did great with mediocre lineups.

The thing is, a slump for someone like Gwynn was hitting .650 to .700, not .450 to .550.

I checked out a few of his best seasons and found this:

1997: the year he hit .372 (.957 OPS)

35 games stretch hitting .287 (.730 OPS) near the end of the year.

1994: his best OPS year (1.022)

Was the model for consistency. After being at .898 on April 22, he never fell below .967, and even then, he was only under .982 after just 2 games the rest of the season! He was over .990 after all but 4 games after 4/22.

1986: the year he had his most PAs (701) .848 OPS

.741 in first 17 games (not far from .848).

.675 in 24 game stretch from 7/17 to 8/12.

Not your normal "slumps."

Thank You for the Info 59!

@IanCundall

Since Tanner Houck has moved into the rotation, here are his batters faced per start: 18 (7/22), 15 (7/28), 16 (8/7), 21 (8/12), 18 (8/17). Today, he got pulled at only 58 p. w/the top of the order coming up. Very clear the Red Sox don’t want hitters seeing him for a third time.

So with that said, what should Cora do with the Player, move him to the Pen when the Organization as a whole cannot develop a single Starting Pitcher?

Cora needs to grab his b@lls and let a Pitcher like Houck develop. If that means facing hitters a third time then so be it. Todays start 4 IP 58 pitches is a joke! Let the kid pitch!

Far as the Pitching Coach, do the Sox have one? If Pitchers have problems with facing the order a second or third time that to me says, where are the adjustments, where is the Pitching coach in all this?

Houck has a lot of Kevin Brown in him, develop the kid!

Dick Williams was my favorite SOX manager, although he couldn't be a manager in this era of coddling players and not hurting their feelings. Mr Williams was fired by Yawkey mainly because YAZ didn't like him. YAZ was treated by Yawkey as if YAZ was his son.

Well, today was about as bad as could be. We were out pitched, hit and defended.

I still think the schedule will help us beat out the A’s, but we can’t let losing these games go into another free fall.

It could all start with a win tomorrow, but today still sucked, badly,

If the season ended now , the Sox would be out of the playoffs. Hard to believe.

Actually, it’s GB that matters not winning %, so we’d have a play in game with NYY.

Oakland is losing, again. This time 8-0.

If they lose, it’s a 3-way tied for the two WC slots with us down one in the loss column to both and .001 behind in win%.

The 2021 Red Sox: collapse!

Assuming the current trajectory continues, that's how the 2021 Red Sox will be remembered. I find it hard to believe they will turn this around, when you consider where the Red Sox were several weeks ago in comparison to where they are now--this has been a complete precipitous collapse, probably the kind of collapse that can't be reversed.

Is it time to start rooting for the Rays so that the Yankees don't win the division?

Collapses will happen, I just hope the Red Sox come back strong next season. If this becomes a trend and happens again next season, it'll be time to find a new manager.

Maybe we are in third place at the All Star Break in 22 and Bloom will be a seller instead of just staying pat.

The pieces just don't fit together for the Red Sox as illustrated in the comment below (key point in bold):

7. The Red Sox have made some interesting defensive decisions with the return of Kyle Schwarber. Dalbec started the first game at first base, despite his continues struggles at the plate (and Shaw, just claimed off waivers, started the second). Renfroe played center field in the first game, while Jarren Duran starting there in the second game. Alex Verdugo played left and J.D. Martinez in right both games, with Schwarber at DH. Meanwhile, Hernandez, who had played excellent defense in center field the first three months until Duran was called up, is now the second baseman.

Of course, the Red Sox have run this through all their computers and come up with this alignment to be what they feel is most optimal, but they've made themselves worse in right field and worse in center field (at least if Renfroe is playing there) without solving the offensive problem at first base. They clearly feel, at least for now, more comfortable with Martinez in the outfield than Schwarber at first base - and there's a reason Martinez has mostly been a DH the past several years.

Also, I can't believe what Cora said about Travis Shaw; Cora stated that Shaw makes the Red Sox a "more complete unit." Travis Shaw hasn't hit since 2018. Can Cora wait for Shaw to turn into a productive player again before singing his praises? Cora has not managed this team well during this collapse, and his comment on Shaw was weird. Although, admittedly: no manager will look good during a collapse.

Maybe we are in third place at the All Star Break in 22 and Bloom will be a seller instead of just staying pat.

My guess is that Bloom learned some important lessons from his failed performance at the trade deadline. Assuming the Red Sox are fighting for the division again next year, I think Bloom will do more and won't let his competitors get better while the Red Sox do nothing except trade for an injured DH who can't be thrust into the starting lineup without weakening the defense.

Tony Gwynn hitting and Greg Maddux pitching were two of the absolute best clinics for a young baseball fan.

When the closing bell rang on deadline day, July 30, the Red Sox were 8.5 games ahead of the Yankees.

Less than 3 weeks later they're tied.
