Sorry if this has been discusses, or there is already a thread on this.......

As it stands right now in our rotation (I think) Perez has surprisingly the best ERA on the team at 3.59. I highly doubt he gets sent down, E Rod has been brutal this year but after missing all of last year I am sure he will still be in a starting role, Nate as well.... My guess is Pivetta or Richards is sent to the bullpen.

Any thoughts?

And let's not get into... "Well if Sale sucks, and bla bla bla.... Lets just assume Sale is back to a starting role until proven otherwise.

The chances no starter gets hurt by the time Sale comes back are rather high. There is even a chance we’ll need Sale and another starter at some point.

That being said, if Sale we’re ready, right now, and looking like he can start, I’d put Eovaldi as the top set up man to Barnes. I doubt Cora and Bloom agree. My guess is they’d move Perez to long relief.

It is way too soon to make that call. A lot can, and will, happen with the current staff before Sale is ready to return. These things have a tendency to work themselves out. If all of our starters remain healthy and continue to pitch well enough to keep the team in the game, making it difficult to decide who loses his rotation spot, well that's a good problem to have.

You know Sale is itching to get back, and he will probably try to force the issue, but the Sox need to make sure he is completely ready to return. What a nice trade deadline pickup that could be for us.

Oh for sure Sale will likely start in the bullpen. My guess is a couple games just to get him ready to go……

People act like July or August is so far away but it isn’t. He could come back mid July which is literally next month. Yes their is a chance someone could be hurt in the next 6 weeks or 8 weeks….. my guess is Perez stays if he keeps pitching like this. He has been really solid. It would be between Richards and Pivetta.

Richards and Pivetta have been solid, too.

The recent numbers actually point to ERod being the odd man out.

OPS against last 28 days:

.622 Perez

.651 Eovaldi

.727 Pivetta

.752 Richards

.957 ERod

ERA

2.60 Pérez

3.20 Richards

4.50 Eovaldi

4.82 Pivetta

6.39 ERod

K/BB

3.8 Pivetta

3.7 Eovaldi

3.3 Pérez

2.9 ERod

1.5 Richards

Hmmmmmm..... the plot thickens.

Hmmmmmm..... the plot thickens.

There is plenty of time for ERod to turn it around by the time Sale is ready.

There is also time for someone doing well, now, to start struggling.

We've reached the third point of the season. Is it time to start thinking Perez & Pivetta are not flukes?

Richards is back?

Eovaldi can pitch a full season?

ERod can get his strength back?

Sale can return to anywhere near his previous form?

Barnes is the man?

Ottavino can bring his BB/9 rate down?

The rest of the pen can cobble together enough good performances to not drag us down?

Yes, the plot thickens!

I like the way you think!!!

Yes to all of those..... Except E Rod honestly seems to be getting worse, so I am not quite sure about that one.

It's hard to know what COVID did to ERod. Anecdotal evidence shows some people get better, then relapse then get better and relapse again. Maybe Erod finds some strength, again, but yes, he's a hard one to project and is on the wrong side trend.

Eovaldi, also started out stronger than he looks now, but he's still going 6 IP almost every start. His OPS against and K-BB rates are still looking strong.

Ya I think Nate will be just fine. He was sharp last game outside of a high pitch count in the early going. He went 5 shut out innings and looked strong. I think if Sale returns to even half his form he will be our Ace once again with Nate going second. As you said though…. It’s a waiting game with E Rod. He just can’t seem to put it together right now. Let’s see what he can do against a tough Astros lineup today.

E Rod with another pitiful performance

I’m starting to agree, he may go to the pen once Sale is back. E Rod is garbage and showing absolutely nothing to prove to us he can get back to form

Well Brewer for instance has to go. He is trash.

He may get a couple more outings (in games like today) to show if he has anything, but if he doesn’t (and he probably won’t), a DFA will not be long in coming. It will be no later than when Brasier comes back or they decide Workman has earned a 40 man slot.

I think a reliever goes down. Once Sale is built back up, they just move the worst starter into the pen.

That is what I am thinking, and right now it's E-Rod and it's not even close.

He has 2 months to turn it around and show that the beginning of the year was "unlucky" for him. Otherwise, it's just a new normal.

Unlucky, plus the building back up thing.

I don't think managers make these calls based on someone's last 5 games, but I don't disagree with your current choice.

Ya agreed. I hope he gets better, but time will tell.

There is a reliever on the 40 man roster named brennen, I think. I got to see him pitch and it was god awful!

How is he not a candidate to release?

He couldn't have been that bad since he's only given up 1 run this year.

ERod is obviously my choice to put on the IL or whatever because right now he is hurting the team. He did not, however, hurt the Sox in Houston because in those three games the hitting has stunk.

Moonslav and others are right in saying there is still plenty of time before any adjustments are made to bring Sale back to the big club. He might even be a great choice for a late reliever--as moonslav points out--but I don't see that because I have doubts about ERod. The other four starters, on the other hand, are all doing better than I expected--for now.
