I'd like to see Garret Richards out of the starting rotation. I don't care where he goes, bullpen, minors, traded. Just not in the starting rotation.

What about 1b?

He is for sure the No. 1 candidate to go to the pen.

We may see Perez sent to the pen later.

Eovaldi

Sale

ERod

Trade

Pivetta

Houck

Perez

Richards

Why does anyone even want him in the pen?

Well, probably he could be better coming off the pen than Andriese and Workman, for long reliever duties, but yes he is still big IF, even coming off the pen.

The back of the pen, that is. Maybe he would do better there.

It's a pretty small matter one way or the other at this point.

Well, speaking for myself I like Houck over Pivetta anyday of the week.

I don't think we need any of those guys. Fix it before the deadline.

His career stats are worse out of the pen.

It doesn't hurt to have a little depth for injuries, if you can manage it.

But with guys like Valdez and Rios stepping up, Richards could certainly be out of the picture.

It's beyond me why Andriese and Workman are still in this team regardless what happens with Richards.

Workman has been somewhat useful recently. Andriese is a goner for sure.

Andriese is on the IL. Workman is next on the chopping block.

They are legitimate DFA candidates, but also because Bloom might not give as much importance to 18-25 IP samples as you prefer.

Recently?

Last 5 appearances: 4 IP, 5 ER, 1 K, 6 BB

Last 16 - 3.31 ERA

And he can pitch 2 innings.

Not saying he's good, but not bad for the back of the pen.

He's only pitched 2 innings twice this year. C'mon man...

Houck seems better suited for relief and long relief.

I don't disagree, but Pivetta has earned another start or two.

Both of those 2 inning appearances were in the last 16. Plus 2 other 4 out appearances.

You are really making me WORK, MAN.

@alexspeier

The Red Sox optioned Houck to Triple-A Worcester after last night’s game.

Optioning Houck rather than Wong gives the Sox greater freedom to use Plawecki. That said, slightly surprising that it is Houck and not another optionable reliever (Valdez?) who got sent down… save for the fact that Sawamura should be activated tomorrow.

Cora said the Tanner Houck option was about roster flexibility. That he will pitch in Toronto next week Saturday.

@SPChrisHatfield

A-ha, I guess they can bring Houck back up sooner as the 27th man in the doubleheader.

This is basically letting them use a 27-man roster for the next week ("carrying" Houck as 6th starter without him actually being on roster).

That's shrewd as hell.

Want to delete that unfortunately timed post, moon?

With the 27th man rule, it makes more sense.

Workman is on his 10th life, now.
