Could ort be an upgrade over a andriese?

Ort appears to be do well in Worcester. I think he definitely could be an upgrade over either Andriese or Workman

If Brasier and Bazardo are ready, they may get the call, first. Wecould also demote Rios and bring up 2.

After brazier got beaned in the head, I had not heard anything else about him throwing again,

I haven't either.

I'm not sure what level of urgency Bloom had for replacing Andriese, if any.

We have 3 guys that could easily be replaced:

Andriese

Rios

Workman

(In no particular order)

Houck is also nearing readiness. He may come in as a long reliever at first so maybe replacing Andriese makes sense.

Add ERod to that mix

Not yet. He's certainly "on the radar," but I think he's earned a longer chance to turn things around.

I could see us calling up Houck and putting ERod on the IL to give him a rest, and to see, if maybe he just needs to gain some strength back.

I'd but Andriese, Rios & Workman ahead of ERod on my pitcher replacement list. Santana stands alone on the everyday player list, which probably should included Marwin in second, but it won't.

Someone suggested using houck as a spot starter to allow each starter to miss a turn or two and keep them fresh through the summer.

...or to allow Cora to just yank a starter who gives up 3 in the first or second. (There have been plenty of those, recently.)

All staffs go through cycles, let’s stay positive and wait for the cycle to start to uptick!

I'm still optimistic about 2021, but having a better RP'er in the pen, one that can go 4-6 innings would make me more optimistic.

Hard enough finding starters who can go 4-6 innings.

For 2021 or end with a playoff run, we need:

1.) an ace starting pitcher. We might have that coming in sale!

2.) two quality relievers to replace andriese and rios. We might have that at triple a in ort plus whoever sale bumps from the starter pool.

3.) another quality outfielder. Again triple a has fraunchy or Duran to pick from,

Point is, we are not far off, the pieces seem to be falling in place.

True, and if we decide to demote one, Houck would be that guy, assuming Sale is not ready at that time.

(Then, the demoted starter would be the long man.)

That's very far off. Just getting an ace would bust the budget and clean out the farm.

We are not going to trade away the future to grasp at straws this October.

Our best hope is Sale fills the ace role. Brasier and maybe Houck/Bazardo/Ort or someone else steps up in the pen. Duran and or Cordero fill the OF need, and we trade someone like Chavis and Arauz for a decent RP'er or role player (1B/OF?)

It looks like Larry and you are in agreement. He didn't say anything about deadline trades.

I have been on record as saying that I expect John Henry to be willing to spend what it takes to bring a title to Boston after his European fiasco. While I still believe that to some extent, I doubt if the big move would come to get pitching this trading deadline unless they come at a ridiculous bargain. I say that because I think that Houck, Sale, Ort et al enter into that calculus. If any moves do come it is more likely that they are moves that are upgrades to shore up the infield and outfield defense. I don't see Boston parting with any of their blue chip prospects to get them.

I would add unless Marwin Gonzalez and Santana turn it around I would not expect either to be on this club by the playoffs.

Santana, agreed, but Gonzalez will be kept around for his defense at least.

I definitely don't want to overpay and sacrifice the future for shot at a ONE GAME PLAYOFF as a wildcard team.

As you say, we'll have some internal options as players get healthy.

Position Player of the Week

Jarren Duran (Worcester)

There were a few good options here, and really you could flip a coin between Duran and his teammate who will come in as the honorable mention, but the heroics from the end of the week push him over the top. Duran walked it off in Worcester on Sunday to end their week, and to end a big-time six-day stretch for him. Over the last week Duran hit .385/.448/.692 with a pair of homers and a pair of doubles.

Interestingly, Cordero was the alternate player of the week in Worcester. So we have two left handed outfielders who deserve a look or another look. Santana is the guy on the short leash.

I certainly agree that Santana's place on the roster is more tenuous than Marwin's but the Bosox should be able to upgrade for both at the trade deadline without busting through the lux tax or parting with any blue chip prospects.

Brian Johnson, ex Boston Red Sox pitcher, signs minor-league deal with Angels

Hey Moon, do you remember the time we thought he was going to be really good? There were three other prospects that never panned out.

Our prospects look much better these days.

Bogaerts says he’s noticed instances over the last couple weeks where he hasn’t seen sliders with the same bite that pitchers typically have, and he’s wondered whether that’s been a product of the absence of foreign substances

Xander really throwing the Sox rotation under the bus here.

I was never that high on Johnson, and I don't think anyone ever saw his ceiling as being any higher than a 4-5 starter I remember being high on Henry Owens and Anderson Espinoza.

While Groome has been the #1 Sox prospects a couple times, and the last Sox pitcher to reach #1 on soxprospects.com, I never was very high on him, either.

Even now, I like Bello and Song more than Mata, Ward & Groome.
