Cora said the Tanner Houck option was about roster flexibility. That he will pitch in Toronto next week Saturday.

@SPChrisHatfield

A-ha, I guess they can bring Houck back up sooner as the 27th man in the doubleheader.

This is basically letting them use a 27-man roster for the next week ("carrying" Houck as 6th starter without him actually being on roster).

That's shrewd as hell.

Houck is scheduled to start one of those games on August 7th.

Eric Van speculated that G.Richards could be deactivated when Sale is ready to go. Sale would take his 40 man roster spot. Kind of interesting. I guess the idea is no one will claim Richards, too much money, and the Red Sox could send him to AAA where he can work on things.

I don't know, I suspect the Red Sox keep Richards, why not take a look at Richards in the bullpen? Maybe as a one inning reliever? I might put Richards on the phantom IL, and then rehab him at AAA as a reliever and take it from there.

Richards can clear waivers but with 8 years service time, he can’t be sent down without his consent.

Richards problems have been early in starts; there’s been several times where he’s pounded in the first couple innings, then he settles down snd suddenly he’s gone 6. Short relief doesn’t seem like a good slot for him.

Long relief might be the best alternative. If he has it that day and can hold the score about where it was, great. If he can’t, then a game that was probably lost stays that way.

How long can you force a rehab on a vet?

I'm still DFA Richards. He doesn't pitch better out of the pen. He doesn't provide much value when he starts.

Richards won't go to AAA, he'll take his ball and go home.

Sox should have just brought back Porcello.

He's starting tomorrow. Maybe his final 'hurrah'.

I thought that the last time he pitched.

If the rotation starts to get into September 2011 territory, things will be insufferable around here.

I think they give Richards a shot in the pen.

I'm not sure there is room for him, let alone him and Perez.

Perez isn’t going to garner a lot of Cy Young votes, but he also hasn’t pitched himself out of the rotation. If 3 bad starts out of 4 knocks a pitcher out, we’re going to need a long, long line of replacements..

In his last 10 starts, which coincide with the goo crackdown, Perez has registered 40.1 IP with a 6.69 ERA, 1.030 OPSa and 12 long balls.

There’s a 7 game stretch in there where he had a 3.55 ERA and a 2.6 K:BB. He did only pitch 33IP, however.

He’s not the guy from April and May, but he is going to be harder to replace right now, especially if injuries mount…

Did you have to use the word 'mount'?

Better yet, there was an 11 game stretch where he had a 3.09 ERA. That was 58.1 IP (or about 5 1/3 each start) with a .658 OPS Against.

(First 11 starts)

He was still at a 4.04 ERA after 16 starts (76 IP)
