I was fine with the call-up.

How could it have hurt to give him 20-30 games at 3B instead of 10?

We knew where he'd be playing, if he was called up. "The plan" lacked foresight in this one area. They "mishandled" his prep.

I remember people blaming Bogey's move to 3B for his poor 2014 batting.

Moncada was creating a lot of air at AA too ... i think it was a calculated risk that didn't work ... which is different than mishandling. After all, these are all probabilities. If one part of his game was ML ready they could have seen if he could figure the other stuff yet, but the cake was just not baked nearly enough.

Putting playoff race pressure on a 20 year old seems too much to ask.

But if Devers continues to hit well at Pawtucket, he deserves a September call up.

Today's offensive showing is beyond putrid. We have got to get a leader with some power, because right now too many of our hitters are sitting around waiting some someone else to step up.

I agree. Another point I'd like to add is when you bring guys like this up towards the end of the year the MiLB season is either over or close to it. It's not as if they are missing developmental time.

I also think Devers is more advanced than Moncada was at this stage. Moncada was more raw, and while Devers might not ever compare to Moncada in across the board tools I think he's more of a pure hitter and has a higher chance of contributing right away with the bat.

The lineup the Sox put out there for game 1 was overmatched by an average pitcher. This team lacks power and when they fell behind by 3 runs you felt like there was no way they could catch up. This division is there for the taking, but the Sox need a couple of bats.

I was thinking we trade for Frazier and Robertson from the white sox for abad and prospects not named Devers.

Then trade Kimbrel to the nationals for Robles, Fedde and turner.

Our lineup against LHP isn't good.

The Sox have had ONE extra base hit in the last two games at Fenway. Are you kidding me! I think they are 2 For fifty something with runners in scoring position against the Spanks this season. That is unacceptable for a major league team.

PLAN 1:

(1) Release C.Young and promote Brentz or Castillo (probably Brentz--add some power to the bench against LHP).

(2) Continue to platoon Lin/Marrero, let Devers finish out the minor leagues, and then Devers takes over the starting 3b job for the Red Sox.

(3) Call B.Beane and trade for Y.Alonso (the Red Sox need to add a significant bat to the middle of the lineup). If you can't acquire Alonso, go after Bruce, who is having an excellent year with the Mets.

Sept and Oct lineup against RHP

Betts RF

Pedroia 2b

Alonso 1b

Ramirez DH*

Benintendi LF

Bogaerts SS

Bradley CF

Devers 3b

Vazquez C

*Moreland gets an occasional start at 1b against RHP, with Alonso moving to DH, Hanley to the bench.

PLAN 2:

(1) Release C.Young and promote Brentz or Castillo (probably Brentz--add some power to the bench against LHP).

(2) Trade for T.Frazier--Devers takes over 3b in 2018.

(3) Call B.Beane and trade for Y.Alonso (the Red Sox need to add a significant bat to the middle of the lineup). If you can't acquire Alonso, go after Bruce, who is having an excellent year with the Mets.

Alonso will not be easy to acquire and thus I'm inclined to support Plan 1 over Plan 2. By not trading for Frazier, the Red Sox would save a prospect or two who, in turn, could be shipped to the A's in a package for Alonso.

Bogaerts has really been exposed in the series against the Yankees. Bogaerts has an OPS below .600 in the month of July (BTW, Moreland has an OPS below .600 in the month of July as well). Moreover, Bogaerts has been dreadful in the field. It looks like Bogaerts may never take that next step as an offensive player and his defense seems to get a little worse each year as his body changes. Bogaerts is a good player, of course, but it looks like his ceiling might not be what we thought it could be several years ago.

This team can hit pop ups with the best of them.

DFA the whole pathetic lot of them.

Except for Beni. He has the cool hair.

The Red Sox could bounce back with 10 runs in the nightcap.

Baseball has a certain random nature.

The Sox wasted a gem pitched by Sale yesterday. An Porcello gave up one earn run in 6 innings today. Those are two winnable game we we could score.

The flip side is that Drew Pomeranz surrendered four runs in six innings on Friday evening but the Red Sox managed to grab an unlikely win.

The fact that we consider that an 'unlikely' win just shows how we have become reserved to this offense sucking. 4 tuns in 6 frames should be a very winable game with our bulpen. The fact we see it as a likely loss doesnt reflect sell on the offense. Scoring 5 runs should be the norm, noy a mountain to climb...

The win was unlikely because the Red Sox trailed going into the bottom of the ninth inning against an elite closer with an ERA of 2.17 in 408 career appearances.

It was unlikely because you went into the 9th trailing and facing an elite closer. Aroldis might be scuffling of late, but he is an elite closer. Also, you won with an infield hit, an error, a steal, and error, an IBB and a BB.

Kinda like us winning in 16 last night. We entered the 9th trailing facing an elite closer

I agree. The Red Sox were probably 5:1 to pull that win out.

But generally speaking, it should be a very winnable game for the Red Sox offense when the defense gives up 4 runs.

He is a 4 or 5 win starter ... oh noes!!!

If they trade Devers for anything less than a controllable All Star, I will stop watching for a long f***ing time (not that it would matter to the FO).

If you have the top prospect at a position that you are weak at, it makes no sense to do anything but give them a shot.

this is how i felt about Espinoza.

I'm flabbergasted on why Moreland keeps batting 4th.

He did great for us over the first 2-3 months, but he's reverting back to his norm.

We have 3 guys better suited for 4th or 5th: HRam, JBJ or Beni (vs RHPs). I won't open the Betts to 4th argument again.

we should move him to 3rd where your worst batter should bat.

I know the day is young yet, but that may be the post of the day. :)
