I just heard about this. Holy crap. What a tragedy. It just leaves you speechless

Myself as well. When you hear things like this, it puts life into perspective.

The Marlins announced that starter Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident on Sunday morning, confirming multiple earlier reports. The news was originally reported by David Dwork of CBS Miami and confirmed soon after by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The U.S. Coast Guard said that Fernandez was one of three killed in the accident, according to the Associated Press. Sunday’s game between the Marlins and Braves has been canceled.

The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

Today's game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.

The 24-year-old was in his fourth year at the major league level. He’s been with the Marlins for his entire baseball career and was a fan favorite on the team. He had defected from Cuba in 2008 to play baseball in the United States.

Fernandez had posted a 2.29 FIP in 29 games this year, which leads MLB, and averaged 12.5 strikeouts per nine, one of the highest in baseball.

The Coast Guard held a press conference at 10:30 a.m. ET, stating the 32-foot SeaVee boat was identified between 3 and 3:30 a.m. Initially, two divers found two bodies underneath the boat and a third was later found in the water on the south side of a jetty at the Port of Miami.

Tragic......Sad day for baseball

Bingo. You just never know when you will go. I am still shocked.

I hope this was simply an accident, and that drugs and booze were not involved. He's gone either way, and that's bad enough without having to hear all the other like that kid from the Cardinals a couple years back.

Absolutely horrible.. Jose was not only a great player, but a great human being.. when I woke up this morning, this was literally first thing I saw on my phone and it ruined my day early.. Rest in Peace.

it's impossibly horrible. he was everything right about baseball - and his story is the sort of thing which makes it very hard for me to get into areas of "laziness" or "not caring" with players. What he went through to get here, what he did to make a life and flourish here, it's heartbreaking.

That he was the best pitcher in the entire damn league this season is only 25th or so in the ways that this sucks on every level. RIP.

My brother lives in the same apartment complex as Dallas Keuchel, and ran into him in the elevator. I guess my brother was the first to inform Keuchel, who immediately broke down crying, and began telling him all these stories about Fernandez.

Sad all around. This kid was the future on the mound, a Pedro like player who had the size to endure beyond what Pedro's frame allowed. RIP kid. I have to wonder about the circumstances of the crash. It wasn't his boat. But full speed into a jetty at 3am? Whomever was driving was either under the influence or being reckless. Sucks either way

Watching Papi crying really got to me ... damn

I can't imagine how the Marlin players feel.....I realize they have to play out the season but boy....that's got to be tough.

Pedro said today that Fernandez had the potential to be better than he himself was. Just because Jacko said it doesn't make it untrue, and it's not an insult to a guy of Pedro's accomplishments to suggest that someday someone might eclipse them. Calm down.

Seeing Dee Gordon take a pitch from the right side of the plate (he's a left handed hitter) and wearing Fernandez helmet, and then proceeding to hit his first home run of the year, after doing so, then proceeding to round the bases very emotionally was my favorite moment of not only this season, but one of my favorites in sports history. Awesome stuff by Dee Gordon.
