If I were the opposing manager, I would bunt, bunt, bunt. He's been put under a pressure cooker. I would hope JF doesn't panic if he boots one here and there. Hell, he's only 21!

From everything we've heard, his hitting will be fine.

Whatever happens, the experience of having Ortiz and Pedroia as day-by-day mentors will be priceless.

Because we waited so long, he is not eligible for the postseason, correct?

That's my understanding. The only way he can make it on the postseason roster is if he is replacing someone do to injury: someone like Shaw or Hill.

For all intents and purposes - if a player is in the organization on August 31, he is eligible for the postseason.

Every team puts injured players on the 40-man this time of year for that purpose. Essentially (and this goes for all 30 teams - and I am talking about in effect, not what is written as law), there is nothing which prevents a team from putting anybody they want on the postseason roster. This is how K-Rod got onto the Angels in 2002.

Don't worry about it - if he deserves to play in the postseason, he will.

Or Sandoval!!! Or Swihart!

correct me if I'm wrong here but did they not add him to the roster on Wednesday night? If that was the case then he's eligible no matter what.

Per Rob Bradford WEEI:

"Under MLB’s new rules, a player just needs to be in the organization in order to have an opportunity to play in the postseason. They don’t have to be called up to the big leagues prior to Sept. 1."

Triggs is a righty. I bet he's in there tonight.

I would think Moncada would be in the lineup tonight. Just a guess he might hit 9th and move Bradley up to the 8th spot. But I'm not Farrell. They would be no reason to wait it out any longer... It's time...

Yup, they're not getting anything from Shaw or Hill right now.

I think it's on the 40 man roster (which Moncada was added to in time) not just "in the organization".

I see no reason not to start Moncada tonight.

But I can also predict that Farrell may start someone who has good numbers against the Oakland starter.

That's how he roles.

That's not how it works. They have to be on the active roster.

Under current rules, the 40-man and the DL are postseason eligible. Anybody on the DL can be substituted with anybody in the ORG as of August 31. Since every team has guys on the DL, this effectively means "being in the org" is the only real criteria that matters.

The only trick is that the person on the DL has to have been on the DL the full numbers of days (at least 60 or 15 days depending on the DL).

The 40 man roster does not include 60 day DL players. It's my understanding that oif someone goes on the DL, they may be replaced in the post season or any other time only by players on the 40 man roster.

We currently have 4 guys on the 60 day DL: Workman, Swihart, Sandoval and Smith, so we essentially have 44 guys on the 40 man roster right now. We've already filler those 4 "open" slots.

We currently have Uehara and Benintendi on the 15 day DL. I am not sure about retroactively replacing them with someone not on the 40 man roster August 31st. I always thought that was a no-no. I did read somewhere that you can replace an injured player with MLB's approval, so who knows.

Okay. I thought he wasn't officially added to the 40-man until the clock struck September.

As of right now (12:20 CDT September 2) he's not even on the 40 man roster.

I just looked at the Red Sox site; after having 39 names on it for all of August, it now has 40 names (unless I am completely missing something), none of which are Moncada. So that means somebody has to go to add Moncada (and someone else has to go for LHP Robby Scott, who is supposed to be "selected" from Pawtucket and brought up as well).

Kelly and Marrero have been added to the expanded active roster already.

If they are really hurt and have been out 15 days, yes

doesn't matter when he was added - it matters for him to be able to play ... but with the DL positions, he is playoff eligible

Agreed. Other than a few highlight clips none of has seen him play much.

It will be interesting for sure. His minor league play has been overall very good offensively. Every bit as good as Benintendi's with some legit power. Because of his lack of playing time, he may need more time to develop but the talent is there for sure. I'll say it again, there is no one that I have seen come up through our system with anymore potential than this kid. Speed and power for sure. Will he be able to defend is the big question. I hope so.

Well, I guess we won't get our preview tonight. General Farrell will stick to protocol (again) and make him sweat for a day or so. Dumbest psychological move he could make! Where does he get these golden rules, anyway?

Probably listening to his bench coach. lol

We're facing all righty starters this weekend. Mengden starts Sat. So I think we may see quite a bit of Moncada.

A day to settle in. Seemed to work OK with Benintendi.

Moncada will start on Saturday. He will see the majority AB's against RHP.. Hill will also come in for him for a late innings defensive replacement.
