Pablo has gotten by because he is a very gifted athlete that could transcend the conditioning (see Tony Gwynn, Dave Parker at various points, Roy Nelson in the Octagon) - there is a flashpoint now I think - where the gifts can't compensate for the lack of work.

Considering how f***ing fat he is? Hell yeah he did.

Note I refuse to call him an athlete - Wonder what he eats between innings? If he is gaining weight during the season, when he is not playing ball or sleeping, he has to be eating. I have plunked myself in a seat down the left field side of Fenway many times. Unless the crowd changes dramatically, he has no chance and it might not matter how well he plays.

New conspiracy: he wasn't on twitter during the game while using the toilet, it was just while pulled up to the catering table.

Might have to leave him a trail of burgers just to get him out of the dugout this year. Just think about the things that could be thrown at him. Hope he lets people know if he has any food allergies. I'll apologize now for not being sensitive to his feelings.

I can't say I am a Pablo aficionado but I have never seen a baseball jersey, not a T but a baseball jersey stretched over his paunch the way the jersey is this year. That is not camera angle either. Some what to argue that some of the photos are simply not taken at flattering angles. But a jersey stretched over a paunch like that is not camera angle. Flab is one thing, fabric is another.

Look, I can attest to this. Look at the elastic waist band and how it is rolled over. That happens when a large stomach is inside it pushing it down and out.

I bet he has fun tying his cleats.

It concerns me that Pablo has been so mindlessly neglectful of his career. I really expect very little from him in 2016. It also concerns me that his weight has become a distraction to the FO. The fact that they planted the false story from Farrell that Pablo had lost 20 lbs and now they are circling the wagons about his BMI makes me think that they are upset with him and concerned that they have made a big mistake signing him.

You do not know this as fact, so don't state it as such.

Pablo probably has lost about 20 pounds from what he weighed at the end of the season last season. The 17% body fat is another story, but it's quite possible that he did lose weight during the offseason and reported to camp in better condition than when he left last season.

By all accounts, Pablo has looked good in ST so far. Merloni said that his swing this year is like day and night from last year.

He may or may not be good this season, but unlike the rest of you here who have already made up your minds about him, I'm going to let him play a few games before I crucify him.

The one thing that wasn't a fact was Farrell's statement that Pablo had lost 20 lbs and looked fit. Yeah, I am sure that Farrell put him on a scale when he saw him. If he thought he lost 20 lbs by looking at him, he needs to get his eyes tested. The whole "Pablo is in better shape" narrative coming out of the FO is deliberate and ridiculous. The whole narrative exploded in their faces with one snapshot of his enormous gut protruding from his workout gear.

I think Pablo actually looks worse in a uniform jersey. That thing is just stretched and straining over that massive gut. You have to believe that its a size XXXXXXXXXXL or whatever the largest sized jersey they have. There is simply no extra material anywhere in that jersey....it is all used up. Even last year, there was at least a little fabric left. It wasn't totally stretched out.

We really need a new topic.

Farrell stated the Chris Young will play against every LHP. If JBJ is playing CF, does that mean Young will start in CF for 50 games? If so, whynot just leave Betts in CF?!?!?!?

Posted

Don't think it made much sense to announce this early that Young would play against every LH pitcher and I think it makes more sense to just leave Mookie in CF.

I have to check the ST schedule. I think the first games are the 29th. Hopefully they are televised or at least on radio.

This is puzzling for sure. It makes me think they are banking on Castillo more than JBJ with the pickup of Young.

I suspect that the outfield will remain in flux through the bulk of the season.

Of course that would all be settled if both Castillo and Bradley hit.

We really need a new topic.

I've kind of enjoyed the banter. I have had some good laughs. Life gets pretty serious and can get a little nasty when we think we have such profoundly important statements to make and sentiments to express. Just like sandoval, I can follow the breadcrumbs to something new and vastly more important. It was fun - a good laugh.

So just leave Betts alone! What's with the impetus to move Betts to a new position if CF will be manned by two part timers?

Farrell's statement was based on what he saw in Dec, not when Pablo showed up at ST.

I don't doubt that Pablo dropped 20. The problem is, it looks like he wasn't able to keep it off.

As usual, the Sox FO don't know how to handle a controversial issue.

John Henry's "17% BMI" comment was just dumb.

Pablo better start off the season on a good note, or the Boston media and more fans, masquerading as comedians, will make things tough on him.

Posted
They will make things tough for him either way, and in all honesty, he only has himself to blame.

All they had to say was "he worked on his agility over the offseason and will be ready to do for opening day." All this other nonsense is just PR spin that is failing. You can't have multiple contradictory reports every other day.

Pablo is at fault, but management isn't helping the situation. They could have squashed the story on day 1, but didn't.

Pablo is eating his way out of the league, but let's not pretend that this is something that happened overnight.

It's really not that big a deal switching between centerfield and right. A lot of center fielders migrate to right field and do fine -- Shane Victorino springs to mind. I'd actually rather that we keep flexibility in the outfield and make sure that everyone who can play there gets a little experience

Betts doesn't have enough OF experience to be jerking him around. He needs to be left at one position and learn it.

Or trade Pedroia and move Mookie to second!!!!

Last year I saw a good poster mention on another forum that Lou was on a talkshow railing Hanley on his practice effort out in left.

Again, from watching Hanley's effort while playing left last year. I don't think Hanley believes that his defensive play is worth his time.

In fact, when interviewed early in the offseason, the only thing he referred to was his hitting. He said that as long as he hits, everything will be fine. And honestly, that's true, unless he's an absolute train wreck at 1B.
