Why do you think he won't go to the ground?

I'm not going to convince anyone to give Pablo a chance. People made up their minds about him last year. Nothing would have fixed that even losing weight. His personality was never going to fit in a market like Boston.

He's gonna get a chance whether ytou convince anyone to give him one or not. We don't have to like it though. His chance of being highly productive is pretty small

If that photo of Pablo is not photo shopped, it is very disappointing that he is starting off the season so heavy. If last year is any guide, he will pack on another 30 lbs during the season as his only workout will be tweeting on the toilet between innings.

Trying to figure what would be best for Panda's walk up theme, Iron Man? Sir Mix-A-Lot?

Hanley's from last year would be a good fit. Song is called "Choices."

My optimism about Panda turning it around was quickly snuffed by the pictures. This guy might be a complete writeoff of 95 million.

@RedSox just tweeted a video of the right side of the IF taking grounders. Hanley looked comfortable at first, and made a nice scoop out of the dirt on a throw from Holt, who was swapping in with Pedey, although I couldn't really tell who the 3 or 4 guys were at second. I'm assuming it was those two because I heard Pedey yelling while a similarly short white guy was throwing.

i really would like to see Shaw get a shot and I don't care if it is first or third. i'm hoping that the coaching staff is not too happy right about now with Sandoval and that his leash will be a short one. I am sure that he will get his chance but Shaw might be the better player right now.

One of the videos shot yesterday at Ft. Myers showed Pablo fielding grounders at third. Shaw was standing to his left and alternating turns taking grounders.

I found that encouraging.

Did Hanley go to the ground for batted balls in the nice soft OF grass of Fenway?....enough said.

Case closed. Let's pack it up, UN!

You asked me the question...I answered it. You want me to not believe my own eyes and when I won't do that think a snide remark makes it all go away. SORRY!

How much monitoring does a team do to their players in the offseason?

You hear about them checking in with them once in a while, but I would think it would go much further than that.

You look at the contracts you are paying some of these people, wouldn't the team provide a nutritionist, physical fitness coach, and maybe someone to work on some baseball skills during the off season? I would think each player would be given certain goals to achieve. Maybe 10% increase in strength, do a quicker mile run, get to a certain fat percentage, hit 1000 balls a week, work on ground balls to the left etc. And then I would think they would be checking in with on these or made sure that they are doing so.

I'm asking because I am interested. Do any of you know how these players are monitored during the offseason? Some of these contracts are worth tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, I would think the team would be making sure the players are working out during the off season.

Pretty much the only answer to the press about a players poor performance last year is "I identified that as an issues last year, and I worked my ass off this off season to make me a better player at that particular aspect of my game". And the team should be able to confirm that.

As soon as 2014 Ramirez was diving all over the IF as a starting SS, but suddenly, because jung didn't see him dive in 2015 for some reason (I did, on the road, it was not pretty) then suddenly we can conclude he's not going to be diving while playing 1B. I don't even know where to begin deconstructing this ridiculous statement, and the buttload of logical falacies.

In fact, here it is:

Hanley dives, looks like Left tackle playing OF, jung is exposed for making stuff up

I think there is some - all of the above to a degree. But the CBA (justly) does I think mandate that these guys get time away, and that their offseason work is theirs. Otherwise you run into the NFL situation where Organized Team Activities are only statutorily optional but are essentially mandatory.

And even if they did - the monitor has to go home. And it's not like they can cut a guy for what he does in the offseason (especially if it doesn't involve the sort of thing Aaron Hernandez got into).

Your honor, we have been presented with new evidence that seem to be sufficient for us to receive a warrant in the Hanley case...

To be fair, Pablo did work on his mile run, he just didn't look at his stop watch all off season.

I move for a vote of no confidence on John Farrell who stated the Pablo lost 20 lbs, when it is clear he did no such thing.

Posted (edited)

Maybe.

When you are a fat f*** like I have been at times, you can lose 10 - 20 lbs and not look any different. In fact, the only way I knew that I was losing was by my belt.

A guy like Pablo needs to lose about 40 lbs before he will look noticeably thinner. I know from experience. And so do some of the other men on this board.

To me, he looks to be at or around his 2015 spring training weight.

Can he still be an effective player? I would hope so. However it should go without saying that the chances of seeing great play from him would be much better if he lopped off a s*** load of weight.

Anyone who says otherwise has not been fat or obese. As a pedestrian I can tell you that being that fat effects every aspect of your life. Like putting on clothes and shoes, getting into and out of a car, going up and down stairs.

It would seem logical, therefore, to assume that an athlete who is required to do so many strenuous activities would see some decline in ability.

That's just the way that it works.

Hopefully he won't suck as badly as in 2015.

He's relearning to "eat the ball" as all infielder should at some point.

They apparently monitored Pablo very closely, and were pleased by what they saw during the offseason.

Ankle monitor that beeped any time a pizza or cake was detected in the vicinity.

Yea, I saw that. Weekly visits from the team even.

I guess if you run 5 miles a day and still eat like crazy you don't lose weight. Eating disorder they say.

I know this doesn't bug you all that much Kimmi, but it does me to an extent.

I just can't wrap my head around it maybe. I work my ass off trying to stay in shape just for my own well being. But this guys job is to be a top athlete and gets paid 20 million for 8 months of work. He has mega resources to assist him to be a top athlete.

I know they the trainer said Pablo did great and is in better condition than last year, and the FO was pleased. But really.....? I bet there isn't one person on that team that wouldn't send him packing if they could dump him.

Last year I hung in there more than most people and thought Pablo would turn it around. I was wrong.

If he is just average this year I think it will be a huge win.

I think they were happy he didn't explode.
