I am guessing that if Panda actually lost any weight, that stopped as Farrell's plane left Florida when he went down there to visit. Panda probably celebrated with about a 5,000 calorie meal. He says he was not even trying to take off weight this off season and that the Sox did not ask him to take off any weight.

Just my opinion but I really don't think Panda wants to be here. He has his money. He knows we are passionate about this team. This is a place a player should want to play....but Panda's best days are behind him IMO.

Hanley is probably holding out for the DH spot soon to be vacant. If not for that I doubt Hanley would want to be here either. Welcome to MLB in the 21st century.

Haters gonna hate.

You are right for sure. We just need to show them a little more love and everything will be just fine. I know that i certainly need some sensitivity training. I take that back. I really don't. I actually don't like either of those two guys very much but I don't hate anyone. When either or both of these two earn their gold stickers i will willingly pat them on the back but not until. There are just to many good young hard working players going about their business for me to be cheering to hard for Pablo and Hanley. If they work hard and produce good for them. If they don't, I think that the tolerance level will be a lot lower than it was last year. They are replaceable.

Panda looking pretty fit

Where is Kimmi? We need some math computations here!

I'm 5'7" and about 270. I look like this!!!!!!

Pablo is what? 6'1" -6'2"?

As I have said, his reported weight of 245 at the beginning of last season was very likely PR.

This guy has reported to camp in about the same shape as last year, according to all I have read today.

My educated guess is that he is currently about 325.

Any honest fat person would agree, I believe.

Yeah, I'm looking for better play from him this year. Not.

I'm just as good as Kimmi in the math area...

I'd say he's hovering at about 300. If the team really sees it as a problem, they could realistically make him get down to 275 or so by Opening Day. But who says it's a problem? We all watched CC fall apart after losing weight, which now seems like it was due to alcoholism, not weight loss, but the point still stands. As long as his range at 3rd isn't too diminished, it shouldn't be that big of an issue. On the other hand though, shedding pounds could add a significant amount of power. There's this kid at my school who could rake before, but he lost 30 pounds this offseason and now he's scary good.

Panda's comments were basically f*** you Boston. That combined with that shape is gonna' draw a lotta' fire in Fenway. Too much time standing around out at 3rd with a hostile crowd and this could get ugly quickly. I have seen guys just not let up on a player for an entire game....as long as the player is on the field. Hanely has the SD role out ahead of him and I think that is enough to keep him interested. I really do think Panda is going to push this to the point where the Sox really try to get him outta' here at some point this year.

As for the consequences of the added weight itself on Panda's game. we all saw it last year...those of us that watched a lotta' Sox baseball. Panda has finally found a weight that won't support even decent play and that is where he ended last season. He actually looks bigger!!!!

1) No you're not.

2) You're right, he's hovering around 300, but I doubt he'll drop 25 in a month and a bit.

3) You could literally not be more wrong if you tried. CC's problem was his knees giving out under his weight. He didn't have "alcoholism surgery", he had multiple injuries to his knees, and ended up pitching with an essentially bone-on-bone right knee. It was the weight, no way to spin it.

Well he could be ONLY 300. Could.

I don't know his actual high it seems. Maybe his is Remy's size, lol.

But Pablo is taller than me, his calves, quads, shoulders, neck, and squash are ALL BIGGER than the corresponding parts on my body. His belly looks proportionally like mine.

It's moot. He is a fat f*** who does not care about being better no matter what the lazy f*** says.

Another thing. If indeed does not get on a scale during the off season then he is is a f***ing dumb ass. I don't believe him.

Semantics ********. The Sox wanted him to loose weight and he knew it.

As it was with Dice-K, I will gladly drive this porker to Logan. See ya Biv.

yawn - lol - I feel so sorry for Sandoval as he waddles his way to be bank. I hope he can succeed but I don't think that it is a stretch to think that a big fat majority of sox fans would be a lot happier if he was simply dropped from the roster.

Panda's listed height is 5'11". I have stood close enough to him to at least gauge his height. I think he is shorter than 5'11". I said he looked like 5'10" when I saw him. He is not 5'8". He is without doubt taller than 5'8".

He is still using the same glove he "borrowed" from Napoli last year. He didn't forget to bring a glove.

There is something that bugs me about this.

So, in the offseason, he didn't get a glove or have Naps old glove shipped to him to practice with?

I'm asking, if I already read about it I have forgotten. Did Hanley practice first base at all during the off season?

I don't want to jump to conclusions, and it seems like Hanley works out appropriately to get in shape during the offseason, so that's cool. But I think the number one thing for him would of been to have done some training around the first base area.

In fact, what strikes me odd is the Sox telling him to lose weight. He was crushing the ball in April. Hell, I think he was leading the league in home runs. But he said the wall crash messed with his swing, not the weight. So why did the Sox tell him to lose weight? Something about all this just seems odd to me.

In Hanley's mind I think he thinks playing first will be easy. He has stated so. Maybe him putting in the fitness work is what he believes was what needed to be done. But dang, I would have though being paid 25 million a year you would be taking hundreds of ground balls and catches and practicing footwork in the new position during the offseason.

I'm confused.

CC's loss of effectiveness has to do with the knees. The loss of velo is the elbow. Ever since his elbow started barking midway through 2013, he hasn't been the same. They cleaned out the "bone chips" and magically his high 90s fastball is gone. His inability to stay on the field and keep the ball down in the zone has a lot to do with the sequelae of his weight. His knee is shot and it keeps him from finishing his delivery, leaving pitches up in the zone and relegating him to having to fight for a spot on the staff rather than leading it

I can always count on you to shoot me down. I wouldn't want to be a plane flying over your airspace.

Funny that the only reason I'm not the member of the airforce right now is because of how fat I was when I was a kid.....oh, the irony! But I know a thing or two about being fat, kid. Lower joints and the resulting aches and pains that come from being overweight are serious business.

Hanley can't win here. They told him to drop the weight, so he did. And he didn't play winter ball (the Sox didn't let him), but he practiced with the local team in their complex. It stands to reason he participated in 1B drill. Who knows? Maybe he was good friends with Napoli and liked the glove. In DWL complexes, all of that equipment is readily available. Looking too much into it, way too much.

I'll let you know how he looks the week of March 5th to the 12th. It shouldn't take long to figure out whether he has the footwork and the instincts. I am not too worried about his hands as he was a SS.

I have taken a turn. Hanley gets a pass from me. he has done what he was asked to do. He should get a fair chance and I think that he will. I hope things work out for him, not for us but for him. I don't feel the same way about Sandoval. Sandoval will have a target on his back that he can't bleach off. I think both of these guys will have to play well early to be kept around very long regardless of the $ lost. We have other good options sitting there waiting to be used. With or without them, this team is on the verge of becoming very professional (as in no ******** allowed) and becoming a winner. No comment would be the two words that I would encourage Pablo to use a little more often.

I think Hanley needs to be given a little bit of rope this spring. If he hangs himself with it, so be it. There is still a good amount of upside to him, but I hope Farrell is able to give Shaw an honest shot if Hanley really struggles.

Pablo is a fat stinky turd. I hope he plays well and can regain his form. I don't think he will, but I'll try to remain hopeful. If they can squeeze two decent years out of him (2016 and 2017), I won't complain about his contract going forward. Maybe he just needed a year to adjust to AL pitching? His defensive problems are a big red flag though. It's not like he was adjusting to a new position the way Hanley was.

Agree with the one exception. Fat Panda has already used up all the rope I was willing to give him. The way he showed up for ST and his comments upon arrival were the end for me. He has sealed his fate on performance as well. He crossed the age/weight line last year and then shows up this year maybe... MAYBE ten lbs lighter than his worst from last year when he obviously gains most of his weight IN SEASON....Done and Done.

I think Hanley has the physical skills to play 1st. I don't see that as a barrier. But he appears unwilling to work at the game from the 1st base perspective. Can't just go out there and make it up as you go. Yet that has always seemed to be Hanley's plan. Also, he is not going to hit the ground for any batted ball....and I do mean ANY IMO. Once a player crosses that line...."the I am not going to" line then how far is that from "well I guess I won't stretch for them either". So as I said at the top I am not at all worried about the physical aspects of 1st base and Hanley. I will be shocked if he adapts to the mental and psychological change. Given the amount a 1st baseman ends up handling the ball, that part is flat frightening. We are lucky Miley is out of here else we would be treated to pick off attempts buzzing past Hanley's ear.
