It's about getting a known bat.

If we are overpaying because the guy plays SS poorly, then say no. If the bat is still worth it, say yes.

I certainly see the complications with the SS plan, but our SS and 2B slots have been awful for years. I'm not sold on a one month surge, just yet.

Let's get a catcher and shut me up.

Well, we got a catcher. But the farm is now a dust bowl.

I think he still wants to sell, but he's been quiet about it for a couple weeks.

Red is the guy who thinks we should unload suspects for proven stars every deadline- try to go all out every year!

True enough. As the saying goes if you don’t play to win don’t play at all. As we’ve seen the past few years even suspects that get hyped as the Big three don’t always pan out and make things AWESOME. A chance today, or this year doesn’t mean there will be a chance tomorrow or next year, so take the chance when the chance presents itself. It seems Brez kind of thinks that way himself especially today.

Change of topic....I thought Mookie looked a bit old this series

He will be 34 by end of September.  Mookie, welcome to the other side of the hill. It starts slowly but gathers momentum suddenly, usually led by an injury

Funny, there was a guy in another thread that didn't seem pleased that we traded suspects for a very good established player.  I don't remember his name.

Age catches up, even if the player is a star.  I'm not writing him or the other guys off, but:

  • Betts due $203M thru age 39.
  • Bogaerts due $170M thru age 40
  • Devers due $225M thru age 36

That's roughly $90M per, thru a pretty old age.

Trifecta contracts from hell.

A very good player? Is he playing tonight? Is he playing tomorrow? Has he been on the IL 3 times already this year like now, and did he only play in 90 games last year? That is the only hangup to me, and others on here have voiced the same concern, so if that’s funny to you then laugh away. I applaud Brez for making the move despite the Rut Man’s not being  able to stay on the field the last few years.👏

People that haven't seen me in awhile don't even recognize me anymore. Inside, I still feel like me. But in public, I'm now outcognito...

Yeah, Bogey's contract was nuts.

Mookie - $365M, provided $233M in value so far plus multiple WS championships

I think the Dodgers would do that deal over again in a heartbeat.

Bogey was bad from the beginning.

For all the handwringing on here about Devers early this season, he's been hitting like Willson Contreras since May (898 OPS, 21 HR).

I'm still amazed that anyone believes that Bregman is worth 35 mil/yr.

Most FAs do perform for a while.  But when you sign a guy to age 39, it's possible to see 4-5 years of replacement player returns.

I still wouldn't totally write him off.  Mookie is actually a pretty streaky hitter.

He is a solid all-around player though.  His bWAR is up to 2.8, which puts him on pace for 4.0 or so, which believe it or not is worth about 35 million based on the average cost per win of free agent players.

But given his age and the length of the deal, it could definitely go underwater.

I asked this question back before Bogey bolted:

Would he earn a $200M/8 contract? $200M/7? $180M/6?

I wasn't sure he would, but I think that's what we'd have to have offered him.

Maybe when we extended him, we could have boosted the money and years and took out the opt-out, but it kinda looks like the contract Bloom gave him was a steal for the team and with perfectly timed opt-out.

going by fangraphs value, which is very generous, he produced $53M over the next 2 years and $26M. last year, so those offers I cited don't look horrible or even bad, so far, but he looks to be in decline and never came close to BOD production with SDP, except year one with his .790 OPS and 4.6 fWAR.

I'm glad we didn't get him to sign for $200M/7 or $180M/6.

Too bad Story didn't do what they hoped he'd do. Bogey's departure and Story's no-shows really hurt the team.

I don’t like opt outs so I’ve always thought DD could have done a better job when he extended Bogey, and given him more money to take away the opt out, and then the 6 years would have been about right. Probably wouldn’t have signed Story, so I don’t know how all that would have worked out. Of course sentiment worked in when he did opt out, but a 6+ year contract after that wouldn’t have gone so well.

Yes, had DD gotten Bogey to sign for 6 years with no opt-out for $20-35M more, it would have been fine. My guess is there would not have been a Story signing, which would have made that deal even better, but it's all speculation.

There has been little talk about "letting Bogey go," and of course the mega deal he got is one reason, but my question is about the year or two before free agency. Many wanted us to sign him and probably would have been okay with even more than the numbers I asked about back when.

I think the feelings are pretty mixed, right now, unlike Betts and others we "let go" or traded away.
