He needs to get on base to use 'em.

Career .283 OBP. That "great" 2024 season saw a .303 OBP.

69 singles + BBs and 33 SBs.

Last year they had 7 starters with double digit stolen bases, some with comparable OBPs to Hamilton.  He won’t get on a lot, but he will run when he does.

There is almost 0 correlation between hitting homeruns and winning in the postseason.  The correlation is positive, but it's so weak that it's basically nonexistent.

No matter how we look at it, a homer counts for at least one instant run...

... so I confidently determine the minimum value as 1 HRAR (1 Home Run Above a Replacement batter).

My logic is that the typical replacement batter can't even reach the seats -- unless he overpays for one and enters through the turnstiles.

No doubt on that. He averages about 1 SB per two times he reaches 1B, so a higher OBP would make him much more valuable.

Hey, we shoulda got JBJ back in this deal!

i recommend using HRATO (Home Runs Above Tom Oliver). Tom was the Red Sox centerfielder in the early 1930s and holds the modern day record of most career at bats (1931) without ever hitting a home run. me thinks ol' Tom would fit right in with this team.

so Hugh tell us then who the player{s} we got in the Babe Ruth trade turned into in 1960 players for the Red Sox

That’s reminiscent of the former metric WAFL (Wins Above Felipe Lopez), which was calculated by taking a player’s WAR and subtracting the latest WAR numbers of Senior Lopez.

I believe Lopez was only chosen because his initials made for a funnier acronym,,,,

Come on, everybody knows they traded Ruth for cold hard cash.

don’t worry, Kyle Harrison isn’t Babe Ruth

Sox fans that recall Bill Buckner should know this…

Even if he fields that cleanly, Stanley isn't getting over there fast enough to get the out.

Love this deal if Durbin is even close to what the numbers say, because that’s real contact and a steady glove at third without paying much. If he starts off hot, I might be calling Blue Nile Livery for an early-season trip to Fenway to see it in person.

Watched some highlights of Durbin and he's very athletic at 3b. We haven't had a guy over there like that in a long time. Doesn't throw hard, but neither did Bregman.

Hope he was good in the field

In 1993 I thought the Mendoza line was Ramiro Mendoza, the yankees reliever, as in "you are so bad , you cant even outhit this pitcher" and I was always confused why of all pitcher, Ramiro Mendoza was chosen as the bar/standard

Babe Ruth was traded in 1919.  You are thinking of Gabe Tooth, the RS pitcher traded in 1960 for a pack of Joe Camel Cools cigs and a coat of green paint to touch up the wall

IDK, Ray Knight was an aggressive runner. HoJo was up next. He would have walked it off anyway at that point.

you're obviously younger than the rest of us. i remember when Mario Mendoza was playing for the Pirates. ironically, Mendoza's career BA (.215) was higher than the "Mendoza Line". it should be called the "Uecker Line" after Bob Uecker, who actually did have a career .200 BA. I never saw him play. i'm not THAT old.

I'm old, but not "remembers Mario Mendoza's playing days" old. I did know that he's who the Mendoza line was created for.

I remember Yaz Day, but anything before that I was too young to really pay attention.

For the folks from NY, that's a whole different Felipe Lopez.  Our Felipe was arguably the #1 HS player in the country when he came out.

i remember the '75 season and the World Series and Hank Aaron breaking Ruth's HR record in '74. my earliest football memories were the Dolphins beating the Redskins in Super Bowl VII in 1972.  i was rooting for the Redskins and even had a #43 Redskins jersey that i had my mother put "BROWN" on the back. she was confused as to why i wanted someone else's name on the back of my jersey. i tried to explain it but she never understood.

Sure Knight was aggressive, but having him round third and try to score on a groundball Buckner caught in this hypothetical scenario isn’t “aggressive” baserunning.  It’s flat out stupid baserunning.

I agree with anyone who says the Sox lost it when the Mets tied it.  But Youre handing out some pretty unlikely scenarios…

You wonder what MIL is thinking with talk of playing DHam off 2B.

The guy only has two skills:

2B ONLY defense

The guy they have playing 2b defense now is a former Platinum Glove winner…

That doesn't make DHam a better 3Bman or SS.

i don't understand their thinking either. glad he's gone though.

If DHam was on the 26, Cora would have felt obligated to play him, too much.

So the Sox should fire Cora?

It does mean he’s not playing 2b and they want his legs in the lineup, at least until Jett Williams is ready..

He was huge when he came out of HS.  And this was back when Sweet Lou Carnesecca could land NYC HS stars.
