According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Red Sox have made an “aggressive” offer for free agent third baseman Alex Bregman

While there’s little detail as to what this “aggressive” offer is for Bregman, it’s encouraging to see that the Red Sox are still engaged with the free agent. Over the last 48 hours, reports have started circulating that both the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays are “serious” about landing the third baseman, but that the Red Sox were still involved with him. Obviously, until pen is put to paper, there is no deal between the two sides yet, but if the Red Sox are willing to get aggressive with their offer, then it stands to reason Bregman may end up back in Boston for the next few years.

Alex Bregman had a successful, but injury-shortened, first year in Boston in 2025. He slashed .273/.360/.462 in 114 games last season while hitting 17 home runs and posting a 125 wRC+ and a 3.5 fWAR.

Bringing Alex Bregman back would solidify the left side of the infield again and allow top prospect Marcelo Mayer to begin taking reps at second base, where he would slot into the lineup if Bregman returns. Keeping Bregman in the fold allows a clubhouse leader to stick around and mentor a very young core as they strive to return to the playoffs in 2026.

Probably $120M/3 maybe with an opt out.

Maybe $110/3 with a 4th year option at $30M and a $10M buyout.

I would be very surprised if we are looking to go within a few million of the 3rd tax level by giving him $40m a year.

To much money, and to many years

Yes please, get it done.   Would make me feel much better about the offseason and the commitment from ownership.

How much deferred?  Based on last year's "$40M" discount, then the $160M/5 will look more like $25.34M per.  That would be okay.

They could differ so much maybe keep us under the 2nd line. It might take some salary trade aways, too.

I would be surprised if the Red Sox really did offer 160m/5 years.

That would be a 32m dollar annual salary.

Unless a lot of this money is deferred. That might be the reason why he hasn't signed yet.

Pete Alonso got 155m/5 years from Baltimore so this actually exceeds that deal.

They'd need to defer a lot.

Marino Pepén was the one to make that report. And I can't stress how full of s*** this man is.

It is kind of interesting in that the longer contracts are no longer the trend.  Tucker and Bichette might get longer ones, but so far only Cease, Schwarber, Alonso, and Naylor have signed deals longer than 3 years, and only Cease has signed one longer than five…

The number I calculated above, $25.34, is only ~ $1M more than the $24.23M that Cots says we have available before the 2nd line.  On a contract with a $160M gross, that should be easy to find.

The the Frederation can revert back to 'why is Henry too cheap to sign a #2?'.

I believe in two things.

1-Everyone should spend a year in the Bronx.

2-Everyone should be forced to identify with a Star Trek race before they identify with a political party.

You lost me.  No one - repeat NO ONE - should be forced to spend a year in The Bronx.  And thats coming from someone who spent the last quarter century in Chicago…

True, but they did bring his $40M in 2025 down to a $32M AAV for the tax line.

If they do something similar, then trade Duran ($7.8) + Crawford ($2.7) for a SP'eeer make $5M, liek Lodolo, maybe they can make it work.

When you grow up in the Bronx, you learn life's lessons.  You grow up in a schoolyard where you learn to get along with all sorts of people.  No one cares about your opinion.  Or your feelings.  If you're not on the court, it's because you lost, and the only alternative is to get better.  Bumping into people is not cause for a grievance.  Lots of stuff which will make you better.

The Bronx is not the only place to learn such lessons in life, but your point is well taken by this poster.

My daughter played AAU.  Probably about 1/3 white, black and Latino.  I'd bet that almost all of them are successful.  Tough, but nice.  Very focused.  When my daughter showed up for a scholarship exam for one of the Manhattan schools, half the team was there taking the exam.  Very interesting dynamics.

Great story.

As a kid, my family was the only white kids in an inner city Milwaukee school.

Later we were in a Catholic school and were the only students not wearing uniforms, due to being too poor to buy them.

One of my first teaching positions was at a school that was 50% black and 50% hispanic. There was one white student in the school and only 4 white teachers out of 75.

Life stories help build who we are.

When I went to HS, my family had already moved to the north Bronx, but I still went to HS in the South Bronx.  It was fairly evenly split back then when it was 1/3 black, white, and Latino.  When I returned for my 50th reunion, it was all black and Latino.  The kids were so much more mature than when I went there.  The 50th guys were introduced last at the graduation, and these kids were coming out of their seats to shake hands and high-five us.  It was one of the most moving things I've ever been involved with.

Cool.

I'm at a school that is about 35% Asian (mostly from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan & Vietnam,) 25% White, 25% Black and 15% Hispanic (hardly any from Mexico.) The district is among the most diverse in the world:

28% Black

27% Asian

27% Hispanic

15% White

(Not all our schools are diverse, though.)

It's funny that you mention Mexico, for two reasons.  The first is that I thought everyone in Texas was from Mexico:).  The second is I was going to mention the same thing.  When I went to HS, a long time ago, every Latino was Puerto Rican.

During our reunion, I was talking to one of them.  For some reason, he told me he grew up in the housing on 136th.  I said '136th & Alexander?"  He says yeah.  I told him that the city tore down my house to build that housing complex, and that he stole my land.  I was kidding, but I thought it was fascinating that we both started off on the same plot of land.  FWIW, The Bronx is the ultimate 6 degrees of separation.
