Maybe Sox go in a totally different direction and sign framer Valdez and then trade for hitters with their excess in SP.

I’ll take it, that would create a lot of solid postseason pitching experience…. Assuming we get some bats along with it. Which bats would you trade for? I think we would have to pay Valdez 22-25 aav.

Too much for Kim TBH.

It's might a little high for Kim, but for one year, I would have been okay with the signing.  He's been worth it in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

I definitely, 100% thought it was Aroldis.

I heard that the Red Sox are the only team not to sign a free agent so far this offseason.  They have been very active at doing nothing.

Only 11 teams have signed someone from the MLBR top-50.  3 others have had their QO accepted.

Similarly, according to moon's annual calculations, we still may be heading to THE cliff, coming out of A cliff or heading to ANOTHER cliff.

Who was right about the cliff after 2019?

Red Sox have been above .500 since you've joined the site pumpsie and won two WS, so NO.

Who’s Pumpsie?

”Over .500” is good enough for you? It’s not good enough for me. It’s mediocrity to me. Competing for a playoff spot nearly every year is good enough for me. We haven’t seen that.

They also don't want to go over the 2nd CBT threshold. A high AAV for a plus defensive SS, isn't helpful to the Sox right now. Maybe in '28?

you mean 2128?

yeah but he likely won't take a 1 yr deal

Yeah,  but imo, the Red Sox went off the cliff after 2019, because Dave D left and a moron took his place.

The moron did restock the farm system!

the desperate Dave model of team building was not sustainable!

I have confidence that bres-slow can find a lane between what the dodgers do and what the rays do and we can be very successful on the field with this approach

  • We won 84 in 2019.
  • We had the highest payroll in BB.
  • We had the #30 ranked farm.

We won in 2018.  We then tried to win B2B, so Henry opened up the check book.  It was certainly a laudable goal, but we had to pay the price.  Nothing complicated here.

i'd take a 30th ranked farm and a world series championship any f***in' day. now we have (or did have) a top ranked farm and what has it got you?

They almost forced DD to trade Betts in 2019. The cliff was coming, regardless of who was told to tear it all down.

The writing was on the wall, all along.

It was worth it- the price to pay was the what came after 2018.

If DD was here, now, would he trade several players from this group for the here and now?

Tolle, Early, Arias, Witherspoon, Valera, Gonzales, Fajardo, Phillips and more?

it's not Dave's fault but people are all too happy to blame him for it. so yeah, blame the guy that got us three straight ALEast titles and a WS, but not the ******** billionaire owner that decided he wanted to run the team like the Rays. DD wins a WS then finishes third and gets fired for it. now we celebrate Bresloverpay for finishing third. LOL. THE PROBLEM is Henry and his change in philosophy, not DD.

I never blamed Dave. I praised him and still do.

That being said, it was unsustainable and bound to happen.

Yes, the pattern of JH pulling back on spending after rings was a major part of the cliff, but many of us knew it was going to happen. We were the top spending team about to reach the big paydays for numerous young stars reaching free agency years.

JH could have made the Sox like the Dodgers are today, but that was always a pipe dream.

2020 barely counts as a season.

What happened in 2021?

I wonder how Dave D would have operated if he wasn't fired and agreed to conform to John Henry's mandate of no long term contracts and to build up the farm?

I thought the issue was that DD didn't want to trade Mookie? Once that was the mandate, he was out.

Well......wasn't he fired? presumably for not doing what he was being told to do.  I'm trying to imagine what it would look like if he was John Henrys good little boy and did what he was told.

He'd probably look just as inept as Bloom.

Yeah but it wasn't so much that we went over a cliff and more like John Henry drove us off one.

We spelled that out as part of why we saw a cliff coming.

Some denied the possibility or argued that the farm could be rebuilt (while winning) and replenish.

That's why I always felt it was a mutual parting of ways.

Maybe, one can still wonder what a DD operation looks like if he's conforming to the constraints put under him by the Henry regime.

Everything that makes DD a good G.M. is stripped away from his predecessors.

It could have. They CHOSE not to spend from '22 - '24. They CHOSE not to compete or make moves at the deadline. The '22 team was virtually the same team as the '21 team, they just didn't invest in it.

When they spent money it was on JBJ, Masa and Story. 🤮

We were a top 3 spending team in '21, too.

So the cliff was just when they decided to stop spending?

1-I would make that trade for a WSC every day.

2-A top-ranked farm system got us a WSC in 2007, 2013 and 2018.
