Well, it's finally happening. According to Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston, Kristian Campbell is breaking camp with the Red Sox. He'll be on the Opening Day roster, and will presumably be the team's starting second baseman. We'll obviously write more about this on Monday (and probably throughout the week), but in the meantime, how do you feel about the decision?

Good for him.  His offensive numbers weren't anything special, but the guys who run the team aren't just scouting the box scores like me.

He may play some LF, especially if Abreu is taking some time off, but he should play almost all 2B.

I'm glad for him. What a meteoric rise to the bigs!

I think the ability to play outfield and infield one of the factors in the decision making process. Bres-slow says he values position flexibility

Congratulations to Campbell!! I hope he has a productive and amazing at least first 6 years to his career!!!

Just pray the Red Sox can still control him in 2031!

(I'll be happy if I can still control the TV remote by then)

But you’ve given up on the bladder?

It's been obvious all offseason that the Sox wanted him to have the job, I thought he might be playing his way out early this spring.  I think he will be fine, I'll be interested to see how he is performing come august, I won't complain if he Dustin Pedrioa's it out of the gate but I think he's going to be great once he settles in.

Here's to hoping he nets them a pick amongst many other good things hopefully to come for the team.

Further evidence of the irrelevance of spring training stats

I mean, if we were going with ST stats you'd think they 'd plug Mayer in at 2nd.  But we might see a Campbell/Mayer infield at some point this year.

Advance scouts are already sharing Cliff Notes with pitching coaches: Campbell has shown he can go the other way with authority, but on pitches middle-in angles his entire body out of the box trying to pull... Smoke him, high and inside.

Good, trial by fire.  Lets see if the kid can adjust.  If he can, he's going to be stud.

The stats may be irrelevant but the underlying performance isn't, necessarily.  They liked what they saw of his fielding and saw improvement in his plate approach.

If it doesn't work out, sending him back to AAA wouldn't be the end of the world. If it does work out and he wins the ROY, great!

Exactly.  The stats were irrelevant and they liked other criteria…

unless your last names is Devers. then he's fine with it, no matter how bad you suck at your position.

I know I've been harping on the team control thing, but I have a question: If Campbell is sent down to AAA for a couple months, this season, does he still gain another year of control?

I'm not advocating that happens, just wondering...

Yes as it's about how many games the player is on the active roster, not about promotion date.

Technically, it's how many DAYS he spends on the major league roster. I believe the magic number is 174 days (just going by memory). ML baseball season lasts 187 days. (again going by memory)

SORRY MVP 78. YOU ARE CORRECT ALSO....I MISREAD YOUR POST. YOU ARE SAYING THE SAME THING. YOU DID NOT SAY HOW MANY GAMES THE PLAYER PLAYED. MY BAD.

What's the difference between the active roster and the major league roster? When you search for the 26 man roster on MLB.com it is noted as "Active Roster."

I love this move. We add a very good player (he will be), another versatile, athletic player to the mix.

Campbell 6 yrs (2B)

Wong 4 yrs (C)

Casas 4 yrs (1B)

Abreu 5 yrs (RF)

Rafael 7 yrs (CF)

Devers 9 yrs (DH)

Story 3 yrs (SS)

Duran 4 yrs (LF)

Romy 4 yrs (utility)

Hamilton 5 yrs (utility)

Narvaez 6 yrs (C)

We also have Mayer and Anthony waiting......Mayer is one injury to Story from moving up.

Our positional roster is set up pretty well for foreseeable future.

172 days on active roster, or injury list = 1 yr of service time.

The only everyday players who loses team control before 3 years are Bregman (opt outs after 2025 & 2026) and Refsnyder (after 2025.) While Ref is a valuable batter vs LHPs, his defense is not good. We have Anthony in the wings, which should be an upgrade. (JH Garcia may be in the picture by 2026.) Losing Bregman will hurt, and we should not think about moving Devers back to 3B. Bt the time Bregman leaves, we may very well have an in-house solution as we decide who best can play SS, 2B and 3B among Story, Campbell, Mayer and subs like DHam, Romy & Grissom. (Arias and Romero may be knocking on the door by 2026 and 2027.)

Yoshida has 3 years, too, but he lacks a clear roster slot, going forward, especially if Devers stays at DH.

An active roster used to be when the line-up card bounced off the dugout corkboard from vibrations, after Big Papi smashed the bullpen phone with his Mizuno. Or was that a Rawlings.

The "M" was for Marucci.

I think the bat in the incident was a Rawlings though. Hard to tell via Youtube.
