  1. 1. Are the extensions good or bad?

    • Both extensions are good for the Sox
    • Both extensions are overpays
    • Bello’s is good, Rafaela’s is an overpay
    • Bello’s an overpay, Rafaela’s is good

I thought the contract was premature, but I won't freak out.

Bello is the 4th youngest player to play for this team this year out of 43 mlbers. He's having a bad year, a really bad year, hopefully he can learn from it. I wouldn't even mind seeing if he can ramp it up in the bullpen come playoff time if the Team can add a starter at the deadline.

We know they can, but it's really a question of IF they will add a MAJOR LEAGUE starter better than Bello to the rotation.

Can an infield prospect destined to be exposed to next year's Rule V Draft land a starting pitcher whose ERA is better than 5.55, with a WHIP better than 1.472?

We're not talking picking up a 1984 Rick Sutcliffe here... (for those too young to remember, he went 16-1 and won the NL Cy Young after the Cubs traded for him just before the then-JUNE 15th deadline).

Last night was a good night for these extensions.

Seeing Bello last night was a relief. We all know what he can be but will he? Rafaela continues to improve and I think that contract was a good gamble.

I have a gut feeling that Bello is going to be okay because I think he's in good hands.

After a slow start Raf Man is looking better, and better, but I still far from sold on BIG Baby Bello.

Understandable. He has to prove it.

I like the Bello extension much better. He was good last year but his last few starts really skewed his numbers…

Bello is the one pitcher the Red Sox have scored tons of runs for when he pitches. 22 ER in about the same amount of innings in June.

Read somewhere that Bello threw some four-seamers last night for the first time in a number of games. They're working with him on his pitch mix.

The velo was definitely up there.

I tend to agree, we have seen what a good job the coaches have done with a staff that we were all convinced was really going to suck. Bello is obviously just so frustrating and we saw it all in 6 innings last night. The first inning he was terrible and could have given up far more than 1 run. Then he was a totally different pitcher, the one we were kind of hoping for in April.

the extensions were highly speculative - but in the economics of baseball, Bello and Rafaela's AAVs are virtually nothing.

And maybe now the Sox need to extend Houck and Crawford…

Crawford I would get. But I feel like Houck is close enough to bet on himself?

When you are a pitcher, one pitch could end your career. Signing a life changing contract vs betting on yourself isn't always an easy decision.

Rafaela currently has a higher OPS than Verdugo.

Rafaela 686

Verdugo 659

He's a better defender, too, and his ability to play SS and 2B make him way better than Dugo.

The money saved on Dugo could be justification for the O'Neill trade, but that is not really a fact.

Whether Weissert of Fitts amount to anything, I like these two deals, combined:

Dugo, Robertson & Santos

for

O'Neill, Weissert, Fitts (8th ranked soxprospect.com) and Judice

-5 DRS at SS, -8 OAA

Rafaela should NOT be playing SS.

Raf Man has been more than fine at SS despite your stats that you obviously need over watching the games, and the comments from many observers.

Agreed, but it still is a plus that he can play MI, when needed.

I think he might improve, overtime, there, but I hope we never need him there, longterm, again.

2016-2024 OAA

-35 Bogey

-12 Kike

-9 Rafaela

-7 Lin

-5 DHam

Well, the problem is anyone else on this roster would probably be much worse…

He has not been fine.

7 errors in 411 innings prorates to 22 over a full year. That's a bad Raffy Devers year. He's a bad SS even if you get past the advanced stats.

No doubt he’s better in CF, but I guess Cora must be a bad manager for keep putting him out there. Like I said i judge on a game by game basis, and not how he prorates over a full year.

Cora didn’t have very many options for SS. He has Rafaela, Hamilton, and maybe Romy Gonzalez. All things considered, Rafaela is the best choice there. But there’s a decent chance this is one position the Sox do upgrade at over the next week…

You know errors does not tell the whole story, but when every metric shows he is a significant minus on D at SS, I agree. He should be our CF'er and maybe emergency MI'er.

His time at 2B has been very limited, but his metrics there are from zero (OAA and DRS) to plus on UZR/150 (+6.3.)

I agree Cora doesn’t have many good options, and that Raf Man is the best choice he has, but I doubt a defensive upgrade will be added to the position unless Story comes back, as there is the number of options good, or bad already.
