isn't that what any good GM is supposed to do? i don't really see any of the players DD traded away as being someone we might have missed. i hope the next GM trades "suspects" for proven talent.

Am I on a Tigers board?

Did DD make a mistake in NOT trading a decent prospect like Craig Monroe?!?!?

He did trade Drew Smyly, Jair Jurrjens, Willy Adames, Eugenio Suarez, Robbie Ray…

But was smart enough to dump ******** Jeff Weaver at the right time.

Here's a Bloom vs. Dombrowski thing:

While Bloom was signing Kluber this offseason, DD signed T. Walker for 4/72. Kind of a typical DD overpay.

But Walker logged 172.2 innings with a 2.5 fWAR, so the 18 million was worth it for 2023 at least.

I would compare the Yoshida signing to Walker- not a $10M/1 deal.

It could never be Kluber or Walker, but it could have been Yoshi or Walker (with or without Kluber.)

Why are you so skeptical about Henry lowballing Betts or being risk-averse about it? There's a pattern of it by Henry. You would think that if JH was dead serious about trying to keep Betts he would have offered $350 mill or thereabouts. That was clearly Betts's market value at the time.

Are you sure he'd take $350M/10 or 11?

Remember, it was pre-COVID, and salaries were skyrocketing. Waiting another year might have added $20+M to any deal.

Their point was there were n o prospects left to trade after 2018, so how could he rebuild?

No prospects to trade/ No winter budget/ Forced budget slashing. Where is DD'd history of success under those circumstances? Or other GMs, for that matter, unless you're a Ray.

I’ve never called him a clueless guy when it comes to baseball. I just think he relies far too much on his checkbook and leaves huge contractual messes in his wake.

Even Detroit just saw the end of the contract extension Dombrowski signed Miguel Cabrera to in 2014…

That’s more reasonable.

I don’t mind missing on Walker. There were a few pitchers I’d have preferred, but not going multi year on Walker was fine with me…

A lot of those suspects are still in MLB.

The point isn’t that they didn’t become stars. The point is they became minimum wage MLB players who, in Boston, could have helped the team stay competitive while also allowing them to retain their actual star players…

Margot was a poor man’s JBJ.

Wha, wha, wha. Poor, poor Bloom. Everything was stacked against him. I’ve heard the story a 100+times. No budget, and all those bad circumstances. You have always held the theory that, because Bloom failed that every other GM would have also including DD.

1. Bloom NEVER should have been hired in the first place.

2. Bloom was in way over his head.

3. Bloom was a big failure in Boston, and anything anyone says is not going to change that.

Wha, wha, wha back atcha. Same rehash by you, too.

And once again, you misrepresent my view, but what else is new.

They need at least two solid starting pitchers. As much as I like Devers, we have a third baseman who can't field his position - a shortstop that apparently has become a major question mark at the plate - no one at second base and an outfield that likely will be made up of young hopefuls. That I think is a lot to get done in a short period of time. I don't like being negative and I hope that it does get turned around. Obviously I liked Dombrowski for much more than simply spending JH's money. He often seemed like the adult in a room full of children. He worked the phones tirelessly and was very visible. Some of the deals he swung, I did not think could be made. He got the job done. Once again i'll say that it will be interesting to see what type of candidate wants the job in Boston after watching the carnival for the past few seasons. It's not my money for sure but I really do like the approach the owner of the Celtics has taken. It is very simple - do what it takes to win. Mediocrity and a plateful of hopefuls might not be enough. Stay tuned I guess.

Well said. Almost every one of his trades worked, for us.- Having a big budget helped, but he did a great job.

I do have hope for Luis Urias at 2B, going forward. He's only 26 and had a very nice season back in '21, when he had a .345 OBP, a .445 SLG with 23 HRs in 570 PAs.

His 2021-2022 line was decent, as well:

Per 650 PAs 3.9 bWAR

.244 24 75

.340 OBP

.426 SLG

.766 OPS

+0.8 dWAR on B-R (per 650)

With Reyes as the back-up, EValdez and DHam in AAA, we should be okay at 2B.

Sorry but I call BS on this post as Bloom brought in more than enough of this BBB type talent

Maybe he could have signed Walker and stayed under the tax threshold though.

It's just a comparison of what DD did vs. what Bloom did.

DD had more money to play with, obviously. So maybe what I'm talking about has more to do with Henry's cheapskate approach than with Bloom.

Name prospects Dombrowski dealt who are still in MLB? Seriously?

Margot, Moncada, Beeks, Kopech.

The argument that “they didn’t become stars” is short-sighted. If they became minimum wage Sox players they do a job by helping keep the more expensive stars around…

Being paid minimum wage in itself doesn't make you a plus. Any bum can do that for you.

And once again these guys were well worth trading for what the got traded for. Good job by DD. Bad job by DD for extending Sale.

How do we sign Walker over Kluber and stay under the tax line with the Yoshi deal?

No 2 from Duvall, Turner or Martin?

Walker over Kluber is a delta of 8.

If Cot's is right, we were 11 under.

(Not 100% sure Cot's is right - we'll find out in December.)

Huh?

The point wasn’t talent level but the wages.

Walker over Kluber easily makes 2023 better. But I can see avoiding Walker since how he holds up 2024 thru 2026 are very questionable…

Being paid minimum wage does make you a plus when you have guys like Betts, Bogaerts and Devers requiring extensions…

Why? He's had 4 consecutive relatively healthy seasons. Why don't we just stipulate that every pitcher has health risks?

Nope, not if you suck. You can pull guys in off the street to do that.

And which one that I mentioned qualifies as a man off the street?

Remember we are refuting the notion that anyone DD dealt away failed to become a star so therefore they were all expendable on a team that had no talent between A ball and MLB. The notion that players were useless because they aren’t on a fast track to Cooperstown is ridiculous…
