I'm guessing he's a smart guy and saw the future of the franchise wouldn't be so rosy. Or maybe he didn't like Washington. But it sure was one heck of a pile of dough to turn down.

I think he wanted a better AAV. And with 2 1/2 years to go figured he has time to work something else out.

The offer was well under the $30mill AAV threshold people are saying was simply not enough for Mookie 5 years ago. In fact, if the Sox offered/floated that extension it looks very much in the area of the offers Judge and Soto received. Not to mention roughly the same as what Mookie actually settled for in LA.

So my thoughts are if the Sox offered/floated/discussed a $30mill AAV offer to Mookie, they did their due diligence and Mookie simply wanted to see what was out there. If it never got the that far, that is a blunder and it happened before Bloom’s watch. If Henry nixed any attempt to spend that after letting Price get approved at a higher AAV, then not sure what was going on there at all…

Soto is not getting more than he turned down, IMHO.

Maybe not total money. But he probably won’t see another 15 year offer either…

To me the interesting development is that Mookie says there were negotiations while Bloom was here. It sounds like Bloom was the guy who had to try to explain to Mookie about the Sox payroll issues and plans for the future and so on...to justify why they could only go so high.

"They were in a situation where they had to do what's best for them", said Mookie.

Not sure what you mean.

There was the story about him turning down the $200 million offer after discussing it with his mother...

And posters on here were running down his mom for it.

Devers nails it.

The way the Red Sox approached Devers is the way they should have approached Betts. Not only did they offer Devers true market value, the whole gang including Cora went and visited Devers at his home in the D.R. First class all the way. For some reason not the approach they took with Betts.

The org was finally held over a barrel.

Heh. I thought it was kind of funny. At the time. Not so funny later.

I guess Mookie didn’t want any part of the AWESOME speech.

Raffy was the last man standing, and luckily for the Red Sox Boris is not Raffy’s agent, or Raffy would be a FA today, and resigning with the Red Sox would most likely still be up for grabs.

And if that’s the case, it never should have given that far. Betts should have been locked up long before Bloom got here…

Do any Red Sox fans think the Red Sox actually did what was best for them the past four years?

(and I'm not including those who never in their lives can imagine anyone worth getting paid "Blah amount dollars for playing a kid's game!")...

... but fans who truly want what's best for their team -- as far as being entertaining, with favorite star players they can root for and identify yearly -- like family members in their living rooms on TV every night -- heroes who regularly provide hope that Boston has a real chance to win and compete for first place and a World Series title...

Henry f***ed up, Bloom is taking the fall for it.

If the foundation built leads to something special, a few might look back and be thankful. Most will claim the new guy is the major reason we won.

The Sox also just fired Dave Bush

The guy ran a marathon to the mound this year. He just couldn’t turn Bear Claw around.

The foundation built was built by DD, and Bloom.

Cora was not happy when the sox stood pat two years in a row and then did nothing in the offseason to address their issues. I bet Cora was behind Bloom's downfall. "Either him or me" situation

I think Bloom was a goner, no matter what Cora thought.

Do four years provide an adequate sample to draw conclusions?

Despite a 92-win club that fell two victories shy of the World Series in 2021, over the last four (or 3+) regular seasons only 10 of 30 MLB clubs posted poorer cumulative records than the Red Sox.

The Sox face challenges rebounding from their losing record over that span.

The Boston Red Sox are rarely dull to the outsider.

Indeed. I have always been very respectful of DD's role in helping build up the foundation, as well as his and Ben's role in the period between Devers and Casas/Bello (both DD guys.)

Great question coming from an outsider. Here's one reply from a Red Sox fan who's been a diehard for 55 years:

Four years is a long time to watch the team you've loved all your life suddenly and entirely change its approach to building rosters at the big league level. The fact that the club finished in last place three times means the new strategy obviously failed -- worse than any other in over half a century.

The fact that the club recently fired the architect of the collapse -- no matter what materials he was allowed to use -- and the fact that organizational coaches of pitching, hitting and fielding were also fired, shows that ownership agrees it needs to change direction.

... and when you're an old fan, four years is a long time -- as in, I hope I'm still around four years from now when/if the Sox are legitimately back to contending on a regular basis.

Well said. To me the older you get the less patience you have.

This poster, who turned 68 on Sunday, may never see his favorite team in the World Series.🙁

Cora mentioned that he wasn't happy with the performance of his coaching staff. We'll see what other moves are made if any.

Along with Bush wearing out a path to the mound Tek wrote volumes in his notebook. I didn’t see that either one helped.
