JH may now make money on Pirates games on TV:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/pirates-penguins-agree-to-joint-ownership-of-sportsnet-pittsburgh.html

The deal creates some eyebrow-raising partnerships due to the fact that daily operations of the network are handled by the New England Sports Network (NESN), which is owned by Fenway Sports Group. FSG owns the Penguins and holds an 80% stake in SportsNet Pittsburgh, per Mackey. That means that Red Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner, the founders of FSG, will directly profit from the Pirates’ television broadcasts moving forward. Williams emphasized to Mackey that MLB has not deemed that to be a conflict of interest — FSG’s operations are a separate business venture from the Red Sox — and he added that the existing relationship between Henry, Werner and Pirates owner Bob Nutting actually helped to facilitate the arrangement.

Yeah, no. It’s just the money.

So you think Giants ownership is making stuff up to cover up the fact their offer to Ohtani wasn't really as much as the Dodgers?

Old news.

Ah, didn't notice. In this whirlwind of an off-season, all these new guys coming in, great FAs, brilliant prospects, it's hard to keep up!

Indeed. These low level guys are high in number!

Not to worry .. At some point in time when his play is limited and there is no way that he should actually be playing, the Sox will swing a deal for him and all will be forgiven and forgotten. Maybe he'll even wear a Red Sox hat when being inducted into the HOF.

That really could happen.

Not really like bringing George Scott back, but...

I think the money was "comparable" but he Dodgers offer was higher. The Dodgers also are a better team right now and Ohtani already has a residence in the area and is comfortable there. It's the easiest transition for him. I think SF has a perception problem driven by the media for sure. It doesn't help that the stadium is in the absolute worst part of the city so players commuting in or visiting would only see that.

Imagine that Yamamoto signs a similar deal with the Sox and Old Red is stuck with Crag for 10 years............ :cool:

The Big Corner might set fire to Fenway!

All sounds reasonable, so what would be the big lure for anyone to come to Boston? With Story, and Yoshida it was the money, but I can’t see the Red Sox outbidding the Yankees, Mets, or Dodgers, so it would have to be something else.

The big Devers extension surprised some.

The "overpay" of Yoshida surprised some.

The late (knee-jerk) signing of Story in '22 surprised many.

The mega deal given to 30 year old Price shocked the nation.

It does happen, from time to time.

I'm not predicting it to happen in 2023. I'm not expecting it to happen. I doubt it happens, but it could.

If JH gives the green light to outbid everyone, we could sign Yamo. It will, of course, take all the other teams having a reasonable top limit, and if Cohen goes into this thinking he'll offer "what it takes," what would that be, tops? $400M? $450M? If yes, then I would not want Brez outbidding Cohen. I'd rather spend the $450M on Monty and Snell, assuming they don't go up to $250M, each.

Have the player sign an amendment that states "is it ok to fire the crappy CBO: check box YES [ ] NO [ ]"

They used to outbid teams. They are playing things close to their vest this year. We'll see if they can bring back some of that old time religion.

The Price deal shocked Red Sox nation? That's back when we signed those players all the time. Things didn't change until they put Mookie out with the recycling bin on Friday AM.

Traffic and parking are challenging but the immediate neighborhood of Oracle Park is not San Francisco's worst. I enjoy walking the 1.3 miles to the ballpark from the Ferry Building to the north.

In May the Giants have a nine-game homestand -- including three games against Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers -- when I'll be in the Bay Area for my two daughters' commencements a week apart.

The only thing that shocked me about the Price deal was they signed him after they wouldn’t pay Lester.

The Price signing was not business as usual, not was the Devers extension due to the amount of money given out.

Previously, we had extended AGon to $154M/7, and that was the largest extension.

The Price signing broke the apparent no 30+ pitcher rule, like letting Lester walk.

The contract dwarfed any FA signing before or afterwards:

$217M/7 Price

(Manny $160M/8 was not under JH)

$142M/7 Crawford

$140M/6 Story (after Price)

$110M/5 JD (after Price)

$95M/5 Pablito

$88M/4 HRam

It was shocking to the nation, IMO.

Yeah, if you walk along the Embarcadero, you're fine. If you start walking towards Market St, it's garbage. Aside from the Tenderloin, SoMA is just the worst part of SF. There's not much of a reason to be in the Tenderloin though as it's easy enough to walk around.

I think they realized their mistake and heard the fan backlash. Should have probably just given the money to Lester.

You mean Sam Kennedy's pearls of wisdom teeth would be lost in translation?

Here are just a few phrases from google translator (English to Japanese, with the latter's literal English meaning):

"committed" ="involved..."

"going for it" = "go towards it"

"all-in" = "front entry"

"upside" = "upward"

"Brez" = "no blur" (seriously...)

"Cora" = "a West African musical instrument shaped like a lute, with 21 strings passing over a high bridge, and played like a harp"

"so good, so good, so good" = "very good"
