The roles could be as simple as:

1. Bloom - staff the team within the budget

2. Cora - maximize the performance of that team

If that’s the case, who is on the hot seat?

This is a non-starter. Bloom is obviously expected to do more than "staff" the team.

If Henry only cared about keeping the payroll down, I doubt he would have authorized a $313.5 million extension for Devers.

Or Story's stupid contract.

Why are you so sure about that? You don't think Bloom has a good shot at following in Cherington's footsteps? Cherington (arguably perhaps) did better in his 4 years.

Cherington was worse at drafting IMO.

That's not how baseball economics work for a large-market team at all, and funny that you mention Houston and the Dodgers, two teams who win a lot, spend a lot, and are great at developing players.

Wild to think that Henry would make more money if he spent $40M less on payroll.

You sure about that?

But it's not even an argument that they want to make more money. Everybody wants to make more money. The way to do that is making the playoffs.

And going deep into the playoffs and seeing a bump in attendance the next year.

And the guy in charge told us that young star was a good bet to surround with... Turner, 38, Kluber, 37, Martin, 37, Bleier, 36, Jansen, 35, and Duvall, 34.

Save us, Masa (29)!!!!

Complaining about old guys on short term contracts? Is Martin not playing well? Was Duvall a piece of s*** before he got hurt? Aside from Kluber, these guys aren't really the problem.

Overall? Yes. Gates, concessions, ad revenue are significant. I'll redo that analysis, which is an argument that a700hitter beat me on a couple years ago.

He’s expected to staff it competitively. You know, like everyone in every business responsible for hiring does. Sorry. I didn’t think I had to be so specific.

So, trying to keep it general what else do you expect?

What the heck are you talking about, seriously? We're complaining about Bloom because we think he should have done a better job putting this team together. If you disagree, fine.

The Astros and Dodgers both repeatedly succeed because their farm system constantly produces minimum wage talent that allows for highly paid veterans. They can’t afford Betts and Freeman without balancing them out with Outman and Miller and Lux.

That’s what (I think) the Sox want to be able to do…

maybe the Dodgers, Astros and Rays just have better scouts and/or MiLB coaches. their farms produce MLB talent. ours produces boiled crap, at least when it comes to pitching prospects.

There has to be an organizational issue with developing pitchers here

Five years ago , the Sox had a truly great team. One by one, they dismantled it and brought in replacements. They decided to go in a different direction and said as much. So far , that is not working out very well. Too many mistakes were made. Hopefully, things will get better before too long.

The mistake they made was thinking they could make up the rotation on the fly year in and year out. Everything else has been whatever. To me, it's always been the rotation. Mookie, Xander, JD, Vaz, JBJ, Beni, et al left, but the Sox are still scoring runs. The problem is that the starting rotation is a steaming pile of horseshit because you need an actual plan in place and can't just pull a good rotation out of your ass.

From Rotoworld:

Simply put, Hernández is finished playing shortstop. He's committed a staggering 13 throwing errors this season, including a couple at shortstop over the weekend, and has graded out as one of the worst defenders in baseball at the position from an advanced metrics standpoint. It sounds like Pablo Reyes and Yu Chang (hand), once he returns from the injured list, will get the bulk of the starts at the position until Trevor Story (elbow) is ready to return.

It was worth a try, but it went on too long and it’s finally over…

Kike back at SS tonight.

Bello is the first legitimate pitching prospect to come up through the system and pitch for the Red Sox in a while.

Disappointed about how few pitchers the Sox draft. At some point - hopefully in the very near future - that does have to change…

Who is second best? Houck?

It’s a good thing we added Whitlock and Wink in other ways.
