Good article today from Tomase on NBC Sports Boston on Duvall.

Must be well thought out and positive then?

Tapia is not a guy you hand a position to. He’s a light-hitting (when not facing Boston) bat-to-ball guy with some speed and plate discipline issues that you settle for when no other solution worked out.

He did hurt the Sox badly last year, but some of that was inflated by poor defense. His inside-the-park grand slam, for example, was really just a routine fly to center that was horribly misplayed…

Tapia is a 4th/5th OFer. He's in competition with Refsnyder for AB's. He should not be starting often.

Just nobody mention the elite defense that Coco Crap displayed in 2007. Surely JBJ was the greatest that any man has ever seen play CF.

No that was Jimmy Piersall.

It just seems strange to me, that the Sox seem to change their priorities, so quickly.

It seems like last winter, they felt the need to shed Renfroe's poor D and add JBJ and his plus D. Then, this year, they flip back.

One can argue, we got worse at all 3 OF positions, on D, over the winter. (We should get way better on O at all 3.)

All defenders listed with 100+ Inning at this position:

LF: Dugo/Pham > Yoshida

CF: Kike/Duran/JBJ/Ref> Duvall

RF: JBJ.Dugo/Ref?Cordero/Arroyo> Dugo

We agree on this, and when JBJ didn’t work out last year, and Kike was hurt the Red Sox needed a CF/RF, but what did Bloom do went out, and got a LF, and Dugie got moved to RF where he is still at, and not his best position.

It’s also entirely possible the Sox got exactly what they wanted from Renfroe - one season that made him attractive trade bait to help build up the farm.

It’s also possible they were hoping Bradley could bounce back and give them the same thing…

I thought, right from the start, that as much as I hated the deal, it had to be about building the farm, and Bloom must have seen something in Hamilton & Binelas that most others did not see.

I suppose one may still shine, but I'm not counting on it.

That was another "head-scratcher," to me. All year long, I pointed out how we seemed to be stockpiling LF'ers, and at the deadline, we grab a LF'er.

Nothing against Pham, but moving Dugo to RF seemed to go all out against their plan, to start the year, in fact, while JBJ struggled, they even put Cordero, Duran and even Arroyo in RF, before moving Dugo there.

If Dugo was viewed as "capable," why not Cordero/Duran/Arroyo in LF and Dugo in RF before the Pham addition?

Good questions, but no answers. The ideal is to kind of have 2CF for CF, and RF in Fenway. It’s hard to get someone like a Mookie.

And now, suddenly, it's okay to pencil in Dugo in RF FT and put a corner OF'er in CF and sign a DH to play LF.

But hey, at least our 1B defense should be much improved.

It may be okay to go with that OF alignment, but it certainly won’t be a great rangy D.

The plan has to be that the major upgrade in OF offense will outweigh the drop in D.

Hopefully it works, and then some.

Sox are currently lighting up NYY Tyler Danish. Wonder what Bloom saw in that guy?

Dearden HR

Valdez 1B

Rafaela force out

Palka HR - 2RBI

Goodrum 1B

McGuire 1B

Crook HR - 3RBI

@redsoxstats

Coming into today, Tyler Danish had allowed 8 ER in 1.0 inning this spring for the Yankees. The Sox just scored 6 (3 HRs) in 0.1 innings against him. 94.50 ERA.

Paulino hits first jack of the year and the Sox really don't want to lose this ST.

A lot of posters love to totally dismiss anything that happens in ST -- as if success at hitting or pitching or fielding have no merit whatsoever, even in confidence-building.

But it is worth noting (if not gloating) that the Yanks' starting line-up included names like Judge, Stanton, Rizzo, Donaldson, Trevino, and OMG VOLPE -- the NEXT JETER.

Boston's starting offense had one big leaguer, Reese McGuire.

I mean, if anything, this gives more merit to your first sentence.

I don't think you can outright dismiss ST results, but I don't think you can necessarily hang your hat on them either. It's nice to see the Sox play well together. Very good to see that the vibes are strong. A good clubhouse can turn a 78 win team into an 84 win team.

It’s definitely better to be winning like they have than to be losing, but I don’t know how much all the winning will carry over once the real season starts. Most of the frontline players haven’t really contributed to all the winning so far, so we’ll have to wait, and see on that. I still think the success of the Red Sox this year will hinge on the success of the starting rotation, and there are still a lot of questions there.

When you go to mlb.com, you get a nice big picture of Masataka Yoshida now.

Is THIS the team to beat? Japan cruises again

Team Japan is serving notice to the rest of the Classic field: It's here to win. Behind five RBIs from new Red Sox signee Masataka Yoshida, Japan rolled past Korea for its second straight rout.

Here's a video:

I dismiss them.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them…

Do you dismiss bad ST results?

Niko Goodrum: 176 AVG, 17 AB, 3 H, 1 BB, 11 K, 399 OPS

Duvall: 000 AVG, 11 AB, 3 BB, 6 K, 200 OPS

Kiké: 077 AVG, 13 AB, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 277 OPS

Of all the hitters with bad numbers, Goodrum really sticks out, especially with his 500 BABIP. He's toast.

Good we found out about Goodrum, early. Good riddance. Although we are weak in ML ready IF depth, I think we can easily get by without him.

I dismiss ST results, or at least 80% of them. The first couple weeks I dismiss them 100%

Guys are going through the motions, ramping up, and trying new things.

Hey I’m one of the biggest homers in here. I could be using these ST results to defend the moves the FO has made to build this team. But I’m…..consistent?
