The offensive ranking appears to be a function of having a number of extremely high scoring games. But for the majority of the games it seems that they are struggling to score enough runs, this is not new. When the big guys make outs they lose and that is a huge handicap. Verdugo is hitting fine now, not sure why it was suggested that he be traded.

When you field a lineup that goes Cordero, Plawecki, JBJ and Downs, and your best right handed PH is Bobby Dalbec and you are down in the 9th inning you have virtually no chance. They simply have to change that.

I agree that relying on 3 or 4 hitters in the lineup to carry the team just can't work in the long term. Bloom had opportunities to improve the situation but didn't. Now, we may wind up as sellers of our main strengths. Hard to understand what Bloom's master plan is or what the constraints are that keep him for effective moves.

Time to jettison some highly regarded players for a shot at Soto.

A lineup of:

Duran

Devers

Soto

Bogey

Martinez

Verdugo

Story

Vazquez

Dalbec

Would be monster.

Yeah that Bradley/Cordero package ought to be enough. But are you sure we need to include Cordero?

On BTV, Mayer, Casas, Yorke, Bello, Whitlock and Houck combine for equal value, but the trade still gets rejected due to a lack of a sufficient headliner. But BTV did accept Devers, Mayer, Yorke, Casas and Rafaela…

Larry, the Soto talk has to stop.

Agreed. If they aren't going to pay their own stars monster contracts why would they sell the farm to sign a star to a monster contract? The answer is they won't.

I agree with the announcers, last night was the sweetest win of the year. They needed this badly and as this fantastic game went on I thought how hard emotionally a loss would have been. But they won and Brasier delivered, who would have thunk it?

I have to tell you guys being a Red Sox fan in Maryland is fun. I was wearing my Sox shirt and a guy in a different Sox shirt said hey. This would not happen if I was wearing Ravens gear as you see that all the time. So when we see each other we almost always connect and it's a blast. And because there are so many of us around the country it happens to me all the time. As a fan of the Washington teams as well as Maryland sports the Red Sox are really the only team I have that I can be proud of and I wear my gear all the time.

But even if they move Snell, the proposed package of a washed-up outfielder and an oft-released fungible pitcher is definitely not going to get it done…

What about a trade of outfielder Mitch Haniger and lefthander Tommy Milone for lefthander Blake Snell and infielder Ha-Seong Kim?

https://sodomojo.com/2022/07/15/mock-trade-mariners-padres-snell-haniger/

The Padres would take on the balance of Haniger's final arbitration salary of $7.75 million. For the Mariners, 2020 Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis would return to join Julio Rodriguez and Jesse Winker in the Seattle outfield with Taylor Trammell and Jarred Kelenic waiting in the wings (and Carlos Santana securely at designated hitter).

However, a trade of Haniger probably would not be well received in the Seattle clubhouse.

Unloading Kim would be good, but if I’m San Diego, Myers is a higher priority than Snell. Snell isn’t still the guy who won a Cy Young, but he really isn’t a salary dump either. Haniger is a very good player, but he is hurt ALL THE TIME…

The Padres really want OF help, and if Haniger will be healthy, I think this offer is more realistic than the previous one.

Isn't his master plan clear? He's been directed by Henry to get payroll down. (Winning, keeping popular players--all that is secondary.)

Then he needs to fire Bloom. The payroll is still up and the team is still winning. Bloom is clearly failing…

Bloom is doing a fine job at lining Henry's pockets. These things take time. As of now the Sox are 5th in payroll commitments, but next year they will be 12th. Assuming Bloom follows Henry's order to reduce payroll we will likely remain at a lower payroll rate year to year for a while. After all, Henry is practically starving. Its so hard to live when your net worth is only $3.5 billion dollars.

Exactly what are all the stipulations of Henry’s “order” to Bloom to slash payroll? Beyond getting below the CBT, which I can understand, what’s the directive?

It seems like too many of Sox fans refuse to acknowledge the massive gray area in between “highest payroll in the game that increases every year” and “small market”…

And please stop with the Henry’s net worth crap like he owes it to Sox fans to bankrupt himself to make a team. How many owners spend more than he does year in and year out?

If you think Henry is too stingy for your liking, try being a Pirates’ fan for a year. Or an A’s fan. Or a Reds’ fan. Or a Rays’ fan. Or a Guardians’ fan. Or… you get the idea…

Greet news, Washington offered Soto 440 million over 15 years and he turned it down. Now Washington is entertaining trade offers.

Hang’em Chaim’s trade deadline to do list:

1.) trade for Soto

2.) convince Detroit that they to trade fulmer to us and unload deadweight rodriguez back to us.

3.) trade for one more high quality right handed reliever!

Sox would be a thousand times smarter to just meet Devers’ demands without even negotiating than to trade Soto.

On BTV, the Sox can’t even trade for Soto without including Devers, which actually makes no sense for the Nationals. (A third team needs to be involved.)

I have devers and Mayer as my entire untouchable list. And hopefully Hang’em Chaim does as well.

Bogey has the no trade, and I doubt he would waive it for Washington. But I think he would waive it for the dodgers, Mets or cardinals.

Washington is a mess. They need pitching and prospects. We can do that for them.

The Red Sox are OVER the first tax threshold for 2022. They're at 241.8, the threshold is 230.

Anyway, Fred Lynn is talking nonsense.

Soto is a pipe dream. He's under control for 2 more years so the Nationals aren't going to let him go for cheap.

I heard the same thing about us signing story!

What’s wrong with dreaming? Sometimes dreams come true!

The amount that Soto TURNED DOWN is MORE THAN TRIPLE what we signed Story for.

Absolutely no way the Sox can get Soto and keep Mayer. It would be easier for Bloom to calculate pi to the last digit…

Soto would be great PR for a team that took a hit trading away one year of Mookie. But a package of Mayer, Casas, Yorke and Bello is light on BTV and has only one thing going for it - not many teams will go higher. (And we’re assuming the Sox are even willing to go that high.)

But if signing Soto means losing Devers, it’s probably not a good deal for the Sox…

Sox need a closer and a 1b. Houck and Whitlock would be better used as multi inning weapons before having a true blue one inning closer.

Sox also need a 1b. Franchy and Bobby D have turned in pathetic offense and league worst defense at the position. It shouldn’t be hard to upgrade there.

If I’m the Sox GM, I also look at the OF market and see if someone drops. Verdugo isn’t going anywhere. Kike might be out for the year. JBJ sucks balls. JD doesn’t belong out there.

If the Sox snag guys like Peralta, Bell and KRob , they’ll be in a pretty solid position going forward
