Attempts may have been made to do so. Only Bogaerts was reportedly told he wouldn’t be dealt, but I bet in the right deal, he would have…

They should have just got the best in each deal, even if they weren’t happy with returns.

notin and I were in with the crybaby fans last year who thought they still had a chance at the deadline.

And I’m not out on this year’s team yet. But I do hope any additions at the deadline are controlled for 2024 at a minimum…

I do not think the Sox are sellers at the deadline. Three wild cards makes it too tempting to give up at this point. Selling would further alienate the fan base. And the A.L. East division is not the beast some make it out to be. I think they are pretty much compelled to go for it. And they do have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

Could not agree more. My one big concern is how the rotation keeps changing, so much so that nobody in it now was there at the beginning of the season--except for Crawford, who was demoted to the bullpen before coming back to the rotation. Cora recently said Pivetta is staying in the bullpen, but, with Whitlock possibly going on the IL, that could change.

Right now Bello and Paxton look pretty good and Crawford could be adequate. After those three, however, it's anybody's guess who starts in the 4 and 5 slots.

Im hanging in by a thread with these guys. Hopefully Houck gets back when he should. I wouldn't be opposed to making trades if it did something to help us out defensively up the middle.

I think Pivetta has earned another shot in the rotation, but we do need long RP'ers, as Wink has been faltering.

Maybe we bring up Murphy or Walter to start.

We have a few days off and the All Star break. Maybe Whitlock won't miss many starts.

There's actually some mildly encouraging news on Sale, he's allowed to throw again.

That would be a big boost, but I'm tired of hoping for his return.

We need Houck back, ASAP.

The good Houck.

Priming himself up for another injury…

If they need a long RP, bring Walter back up. His MLB debut of 6 2/3 IP was the longest relief outing in franchise history since 1944.

Pivetta, Winckowski and probably Whitlock should all never (rarely?) throw more than 2 IP…

I'd like to keep Houck, Whitlock and Wink in the pen- mayb e Crawford, too, but until we have 5 solid and durable starters, we can't.

Pivetta has looked good out of the pen for a short time. He has had long runs at success as a SP'er, as recently as 2021 and 2022, so I'm not as locked into him as just a pen arm as the others.

I don't expect to see the real Chris Sale again. I'm glad that I had a chance to see him at his best at least for a couple of starts. I do appreciate how hard he works in his attempts to get back to it, but the body just doesn't want to listen. he is right there beside Clemens and Martinez with respect to the best pitchers that I have seen in a Boston uniform. I appreciate what he did.

Houck wants to start and he should start. I think that in general Crawford may have a chance to make it in some role which has yet to be determined. I'm also very pleased with the Sale pretender - Paxton. Hope he can stay healthy. I'd be tempted to leave Pivetta right where he is. Just tempted.

I think Houck and Crawford have defaulted their way into starting roles. Whitlock just might not have the stamina. If this team refused to give multiyear deals to Eovaldi and Wacha for durability reasons, then it’s all the more baffling that they keep forcing Whitlock into a starting role…

Here is a crazy stat.

The Rays are #1 in baseball for the most wins against teams with a winning record with 28.

Can you guess who is 2nd? The Red Sox with 27.

This is so perplexing about this team. They actually play better against great teams and then go and get swept by a last-place team. I suppose one could be forgiven for thinking if the team can get into the playoffs they actually have a chance.

People don't like when I say this, but beating good teams while losing to bad teams is something that crappy teams tend to do. But the Red Sox are just such an oddity. At full strength (a near impossibility) it sure feels like they could make some noise in the standings and the playoffs, but this roster is weirdly constructed, and its pitching is too frail.

I counted about 28 starts missed due to injury.

When you figure Kluber and Pivetta were demoted to the pen, and our 8th starter, Crawford, missed time in May, our rotation has done pretty well.

They are actually top 15 and even top 8 in several meaningful stats.

We've got next to nothing from Mata, Walter and Murphy, who were all supposed to be MLB ready and added depth, this year.

Our pen had a few injuries, too, and are still missing Schreiber.

We have played more games vs .500+ teams than almost anyone else, so that is one reason we have the second most wins, but these are the only teams with winning records vs winning teams:

28-17 TBR

26-16 ATL

23-18 SFG

24-21 BAL

27-24 BOS

25-23 NYY

Only the Padres and Sox do better vs winning teams than losing teams.

Padres: 22-25 winning/16-21 losing

Most games vs .500+ teams

54 TOR

51 BOS, CWS & STL

50 NYM

49 MIN

48 NYY & AZ

47 SDP

45 TBR, BAL, PHI & others

The lowest games vs winning team by the better teams:

38 MIA & MIL

40 LAD

41 SFG, CIN & HOU

42 LAA

43 TEX

Want me to make that even crazier?

If the Sox lose their next game, then they would have the most wins against teams with winning records. (With the Sox dipping to .500, the Rays’ total would drop to 21 as the Sox represent 7 of those victories.)

It would be interesting to see records vs teams that had winning records when we played them- like adding the 3 gms vs PIT.
