Shaughnessy is a talented writer, but he also has a lot of unsavory traits. I can't help thinking of what I read about this "Colonel" guy of olden times who had a personal vendetta against Ted Williams. Ted called guys like that Knights of the Keyboard, and I think that probably fits Shaughnessy at times. He had a vendetta against Schilling and now he has one against Papi.

The Boston press was always loaded with writers with vendettas against stars, usually for trivial reasons. The Herald’s Steve Buckley seemed to hate Roger Clemens and once wrote an article about Roger’s temper because he threw a bag of hot dog rolls at him. Hot dog rolls!

Meanwhile on other teams, Albert Belle was throwing baseballs at photographers who were looking in another direction…

And neither lasted very long.

They did win a WS with Lugo, and won 95 games with Renteria, but both struggled defensively.

I think Alex Gonzalez was his best SS free agent and the Sox were a bit quick to replace him…

Renteria lead the majors with 30 errors his one year in Boston.

Lugo's first year was decent. The injury cut down his range on D, and that was all he had prior to the injury.

Renteria ended up costing us about $40M for 1 year. I think only Price ended up costing us more than that, if you figure the total we paid him divided by 4 years.

The Mods here are kind of like a pro wrestling referee. They want to do right, but sometimes they get distracted. Then the heels get to do their dirty deeds. I do kind of miss Swihart's Ghost though. I thought he was just having a little fun. Not a good idea to drink and post though.

I think Swihart’s Ghost just uses this site to vent frustration. He tarely posts when things are going well.

If this site fits his need for that purpose, I have no problem with that…

But Renteria got us Coco Crisp! Through the indirect process of trading for and later flipping the late Andy Marte…

… which is why I said he struggled defensively.

But then after one year, he was traded to Atlanta for Andy Marte, who was then flipped for Crisp, who excelled defensively…

Martin Perez won his 10th game today for another bad team. One healthy one that got away.

And not one person cried when he did.

If anything, the success of Perez does show Bloom had a good eye for pitching talent…

What's so hypocritical about that is that Shaughnessy will absolutely crucify players who don't come through in the clutch. He called Adrian Gonzalez The Cooler.

And then you have guys like Schilling and Papi who came through for the Red Sox like few have. And these are the guys he gets in feuds with? So they have to be clutch and perfect human beings too?

While all this is very interesting to you Shaughnessy haters it does not change the fact that his peers gave him the highest recognition for his reporting nor does it change the fact that Shaughnessey has excellent sources within the Red Sox organization. Nor does it change the fact that more baseball fans trust his reporting on baseball matters than anyone who posts on an obscure baseball website.

The bottom line of all this is when Shaughnessey makes comments like he did Henry et al are more likely to pay attention to it than anything anyone writes here. So deal with it.

It seems like maybe Bloom saw something in Perez, none of us saw, but was a year or two off on his timing.

Not so for Richards.

That why Boston is the sports town that it is. Other than New York and perhaps Philly no town has the intensity for its pro teams as does Boston. If you do not like the intensity or personal vendettas you can alway delve into politics where everything is so genteel and civilized.

With Perez’s win today he is now a career 500 pitcher, so I really wouldn’t call that a good eye for pitching talent.

Such a keen eye to be able to pick out a career .500 journeyman with an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.45.

You bloom Spin Doctors will grasp at any straw......

I spit my drink on the screen from the spontaneous laughter.

I think that sums it up really well.

Actually I think Reese McGuire has been his best pitching acquisition to date. Hey Bloom may try Barnes behind the plate next.

Reese had a good palm ball.

For what he was and what they paid for him Perez was fine. I get he’s nothing too special but you can’t use W/L record to evaluate a pitcher.

Kinda like Rich Hill at $5M.

We should have signed Hill, last year and Perez, this year.

Hill says he only wants to pitch in the second half in 2023, spending the first half with his family and working out so he can eventually help a contender at age 43.

In more ways than one, that should count as a disqualifying offer for the Red Sox...

"Deal with it", LOL.

If Henry decides to fire Bloom, that's his call, but I'm pretty sure it won't have anything to do with Shaughnessy, who's been crapping on Bloom and the "Tampa Bay North" thing from the get-go.

I've predicted that Bloom will be here through 2023 at least, and I'm not wavering from it.

We'll see who's right. I'll own up to it if I'm wrong.

It's hard to know. I thought Ben deserved at least one more year, and I felt he was about to trade some prospects and shift gears.

If Bloom gets fired, this winter, I think it would be about trying to quiet the noisy/bitching fans that seem to have gotten quite deafening, of late. I'm not sure how much he cares about them, but he does care about attendance and NESN viewership. If he doesn't think Bloom is capable of spending wisely, this winter and building a team fans will recognize as being exciting and competitive, maybe he hires someone to replace him. Someone with a known track record of signing the right higher ticket FAs. This is just my opinion, but I do not think he'd be looking for the next "empty out most of the farm" type GM.

I, too, think Bloom returns through the winter, at least. (I'd say 98% chance.) If we flounder, next season, injuries or not, he might be gone mid-season or next winter, but maybe Henry has bought into some sort of 5 year plan, and though disappointed by 2022, the excitement from 2021 balanced 2022 out, and the state of the farm and future budget is where JH wants it to be.

As per usual you misconstrued the point I was making namely that Shaughnessey's point of view carries more weight in Boston than does yours or mine or anyone on this board.

Red Sox front office personnel are aware of his. No one outside of the half dozen people who read this board are aware of yours or mine.

All I'm doing is registering my opinion that Bloom will be here through 2023 in spite of Shaughnessy calling for him to be fired.

He didn't say anything about knowing. He said "I think" and "just my opinion". Terrible reading comprehension on your part.

I agree with Bell and Moon that Bloom will be back. I also agree with Red that most Red Sox fans who don't sing "so good" don't want him back. But Bloom is doing what he was hired for, or he'd already be gone (remember, when Henry got sick of losing, he didn't even wait until for the final month of another last-place season before hiring Dombrowski in '15).

If the Sox suck again in '23, the first axe will fall on Cora -- no matter how tepid Bloom's additions are in the offseason. The new manager, billed as a guy to turn things around, will really be brought on board to oversee the rebuild and spout company cliches. But if there's no winning record by mid-season 2024, both Bloom and all his men will probably be fired, dumped or DFAed.

Devers is the key, one way or the other. If the Sox do decide to pay him, the pressure is on Bloom to build around that investment with talent and win asap. If Dever is dealt in a blockbuster, the return will have to yield one or two players who will develop into stars -- not just big leaguers -- in a year or two... or else.

Fair enough. However I think Shaughnessey represents the views of a majority of Sox fans including some within the Red Sox organization.

My view is Henry's problem is not firing Bloom. That's easy. The real problem is if he does who can he get to replace him. Henry has created a situation where being Sox Chief of Baseball OPS is not as attractive job as it once was.
