Another one of those frustrating guys to watch....always with high pitch count. I'm glad he's with the Tigers. A waste of $15M in my mind and Bloom's obviously.

I don't really lament losing E-Rod. He has always been somewhat overrated. He has had his moments, but he is a 4.00 + career ERA guy. There is no shortage of those.

Since the 2018 season, ERod ranks 71st in ERA among qualified pitchers. Eovaldi ranks 75th…

I'd rather have ERod than Paxton + Hill (about the same money on lux tax)

The great thing about the multitude of stats out there today is that one can always find a stat to support their opinion. Cherry picking a time frame helps too. E-Rod had a 4.17 career ERA going into today's game. No cherry picking there. Just the reality.

My "cherry-picked" stats were for his whole career, too (2015-2022).

Except E Rod has a five year deal. Paxton and Hill may only last 1 year. Bloomisque.

Eovaldi is getting better. Not sure about E Rod.

I was a big fan of E Rod. I just think it was time to part ways. I didn't want to watch him pitch for five more years.

I wasn't sad to see ERod go, but replacing him with Hill & Wacha did not make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Erod had some nice numbers, last year. I think some were his best ever.

He was burned by a crappy D and a horrid BAbip.

Sure, but you have to factor in the length of the deal, too.

That stretch does include some of the worst years for Nate…

Actually I never mentioned his ERA. Just where he ranked.

I do prefer a 3 year timeframe because career numbers can include numbers from 5, 10, or maybe 15 years ago that are just not relevant anymore.

Of course, the problem with looking at 3 years now is 2020 and it’s lack of data…

Of course, and that is where Bloom parted ways.

At some point, we need to move on from the Price signing. It wasn't as horrific as CC's deal. He did help us win a ring.

I love some of our young pitchers on the farm, but I feel like we will need to splurge on a pitcher, at some point, if we want to reach the promise land, again.

So Sale won’t be lonely on the IL?

What's the other high reward pitcher you'd go after that's soon to be a FA?

This off-season? Probably Edwin Diaz.

Reliever free agent deals are typically less risky. For a top tier starter, the trade market is a better way to go..

Here's a short list of some big and semi-big names:

Syndergaard (30)

deGrom (35)

Eovaldi(33)

Kershaw (35)

Manaea (31- I mentioned him because he's younger)

At these ages, maybe Syndergaard is the only guy worth both "large" and "long."

Some are worth large.

Manaea might be worth long.

I would go all out to extend Devers before going large and long on a starting pitcher. Much safer investment.

The Story signing might hint the Sox agree.

(Interesting that they gave Story $140M/6 and offered Bogey only $90M/4. Maybe they do value defense more than some do.)

This.

Who was the last free agent pitcher the Sox signed to a long term multi year deal that worked out? Besides Eovaldi, who was a returning free agent and only took a tactically safe 4 year deal…

Lackey is a borderline call.

Maybe Lackey or the Beckett extension?

Lackey and Eovaldi are both showing your legacy is not in how you do at the start of the deal but rather in how you finish…

Beckett was never a free agent. Extensions are a different matter since the player can only negotiate with one team…

I don’t think it means that at all. If the report was true about the $90M/4 then why bother with making the offer at all? That was worse than what they offered Lester. If Bogey would take 140/6 then I don’t think Story would have even been thought of by the Sox.

I have no problems with the Sox offering 4 years $90 mill, as long as it’s not their final offer.

But at a minimum, Bogaerts is going to command Marcus Semien money, and he might be looking for (and might even get) something a bit closer to Corey Seager money…

You may have no problem with the Sox offering Bogey 4 years $90M, but I’m sure Bogey did. You could tell in his interview that he sounded down, and dejected.
