It's a MAJOR signing! I won him! Yeah, mind power!

They traded Mookie less than a year after he won a World Series, league MVP, a gold glove and a silver slugger award in one year, Could be one of the worst trades since the Babe

After he turned down a 10 year $300mill offer and had only one year of control left.

Think they should have held him for 2020 and battled it out for 4th in the AL East (without Sale) and then let him go for a draft pick?

(Also all those awards were more than 1 year in the rear view mirror by then.)

What if they had taken Brusdar and Verdugo instead of Verdugo and prospects? Would fans have been more amenable to that at all?

Or Verdugo and Maeda?

Or the reported SDP offer?

Holding out for better would have meant getting nothing.

Will there be a nice Christmas present to open?

Maybe that Rich Hill half-year contract! At least we know he wants to play for us.

Actually less than a year

Yes, they offered 10/300, but if they bumped it some he could still be with us. They refused to make another offer.

We'll. Never. Know.

That's not how it works.

Sometimes deals are not made when the other side fails to up their offer.

Maybe some 3rd team steps in. Maybe they trade him at the 2020 deadline with everyone else.

Getting nothing (except a comp pick) is what we will likely get for Bogey. It would have been for Betts, too, if we held out for a package some here think we should have gotten.

Boris also announced that Bogaerts is a shortstop and has no plans on moving position

Of course he’s saying that, he’s trying to maximize his payday.

It might keep some teams from entering the bidding.

If I was a GM, and I told Boris I'd play Bogey at SS for 3 years then somewhere else for the remaining 3-5 years, and he said "NO, SS every year," I'd lower my offer.

Padres inquired about Bogaerts to see if they'd be able to move him around. He said no. My guess is that prevents them from making an offer.

If he's adamant about Bogey staying at SS for the contract, it's going to limit the amount of teams that will bid on him.

I'm guessing Bogey is the adamant one. The guy has principles. I mean that.

I wish I said that. Oh, wait...

I would not sign Bogey for more than 3 years as a SS only.

It was truly nice knowing you Xander. Lot's of fond memories.

No one is perfect, but Boras is pretty good at what he does. And that is maximizing value for his clients. I don't really think Bogaerts would be against switching positions, but he doesn't want the opening offer being someone giving him 1B money, they don't want to set the bar low.

Remember, it's still very early in the offseason. They don't have rush and concede anything right now.

Understood. Though I can see the Sox or another team swearing up and down he'll be SS forever and then changing their minds after 3 years. What would he do, sue for breach of contract? I kind of doubt it.

I'm not sure how much positional talk is tied to the money offered, but it does make a difference on where Bogey will be projected to play for his new team. (See how I did that?)

Story got $140/6 at 2B. Let's say Bogey as FT SS would net him $180M/6. Does than mean, if he's okay with 3 yrs and 3 yrs, he should get about $160M/6?

I've never known positional guarantees to be put in writing.

How about this a new twist on contract wording?

If Bogey "plays any other position more than 25% of his starts, he gets an opt out, the following winter."

Playing any other position is beneath him?

"Beneath him" isn't how I'd put it. He wants to play SS and he's being up front about it. I'm guessing he also realizes it may cost him some money.

It might help his case, if he was really good at playing SS.
