Bonds and CLemens should be in there. Arod too, of course. Rose is a special case, since as I recall, he made a deal with Giamatti to keep the info they gathered on him sealed, a deal he backed out of as soon as Giamatti died. He's a scum-bag, a cheap-shot artist, and a nincompoop, but as long as the results of that investigation are made public (or have they been already?), then sure. Those 4 are among the greatest players ever with the most influence on the sport. Of COURSE they should be in the HOF. Even Schilling, speaking of scum-bags, although it would be nice if this anti-government right-wing a-hole would first pay back the $70 million or so he gladly scammed from those detestable librul taxpayers of RI. Amazing day for Boston, so happy for Big Papi!

But every voter who left Bonds or Clemens off their ballet should get kicked out of voting for life. Do they not recognize that keeping out two of the greatest players of all time diminishes the legitimacy of the Hall?

Mariners…

LOL

Thought about including them, but he never got higher than the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Class A Midwest League in the Seattle organization.

Come to think of it, I may have seen David Arias (as he was known then) play when the Rattlers visited the Quad Cities River Bandits in 1996; can't say for sure.

Big Papi was a proven PED user. How did he get in if the standard is that PED users are banned? I get the BBWAA liked Big Papi, he was approachable and smiled and laughed with them (he was a good ambassador). He won several World Series. But tested positive in 2003 (when Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez tested positive). What's different from Bonds, Clemons, Palmeiro, McGwire, Sosa, Rodriguez, Ramirez, et al. Unless these other guys are in, he shouldn't be either. And I rooted for him from the beginning. My first date with my wife was a walkoff hit by Ortiz.

Good for Papi. He deserves to be in the hall as do all the other guys who may have done or even admitted to using roids yet put up ridiculous numbers. Baseball is hard, and while PEDs may help, it still takes an exceptional human being to do what Papi did. And he’s even got the disclaimer that MLB isn’t even sure he failed a drug screen and was backed by the commish. 100% HOFer

What did he get popped for? How long was he suspended for? Was there a trial like with Clemens and Bonds?

How many of these guys were suspended? That doesn’t mean a thing? You honestly think all that Papi did was on the up, and up? Really? I’m with Shaughnessy on this one like it, or not. Papi was on the list that tested positive, which was good enough for me, and some of these guys never tested positive. Doesn’t mean a thing.

What did he do? What did he test positive for? What does MLB have to say about it?

You honestly think as these guys got older they got better with more power? They never said what POP PEE tested positive for, but he did test positive, and was on the list.

True. But they started testing for real in 2004, and he never failed a test. You can't just dismiss that fact either.

His best seasons weren't until AFTER testing started. You think he was just roiding up and MLB was ignoring it?

Oh, they'll dismiss it alright.

Ortiz's most HR's were from age 28-30. He never hit 40 HR's again after turning 31. His slugging was 570 or better from age 27-31. His production took a substantial hit when he turned 32 (as expected). He only slugged above 600 two more times in his career (2012 and 2016). Seems to make sense from a logical perspective.

One of the bigger reasons he aged well is that he reduced his k rate as he got older.

The only year Papi led MLB in OPS was his final season.

He had over 35 HRs and 104 RBI in all of his last 3 seasons!

Yep, he was on a list that MLB has admitted was likely full of false positives. Testing was not nearly as sophisticated in 2003 and MLB has said it was often difficult to distinguish between legal and illegal supplements at the time. Ortiz has tried to find out what it was he supposedly tested for, but has been denied because the results are sealed under court order.

MLB was saying this long before this article came out.

You kill your argument by citing Shaughnessy. Go against anything that clown says and you’ll be right 99% of the time.

Edit - My apologies to clowns for the comparison to CHB.

Jeff Kent is the only good, clean baseball player!

Career bWAR:

Rolen 70

Jones 63 (more HR than Kent and one of the greatest CFers of all time)

Helton 62

Abreu 60

Buehrle 59

Hudson 58

Kent 55

Speaking of Shaughnessy the auto correct changed it to " Shady uneasy" I think that says it all! LOL

Not to mention, the “list” didn’t come from any testing source or from MLB. Ortiz’ name was added by a writer from The New York Times

I love the standards of "proof" invoked against Ortiz (well a report by this guy citing second- or third-hand an unpublished report by these people says that ...) Very much like those proving vaccines don't work, that COvid is a left-wing conspiracy, and that the Cowboys are the best team ever. I don't give a rat's ass whether he 'used'; I actually care more about whether Ty Cobb was a murderer. But neither affects the question of whether these guys should be included among the best players ever.

And really what many are omitting is MLB was testing for performance-enhancing drugs, but the testing also included checks for substances that were not banned by MLB. Even if Ortiz actually did test positive, it’s very possible that what he tested positive for was perfectly legal.

You can’t cheat if you’re not breaking the rules…

Can't wait for the moralistic twits to cry out in high dudgeon: "THAT DOES IT. I am NEVER taking my kids to Cooperstown again. Take THAT, MLB!!!!"
