Yeah, I'd have to say the 2004 team is the most special of the special.

Not only breaking the drought, but beating the Yankees in miraculous fashion.

And just an amazing group of players.

It's not only beating the Yankees, but the way they did it. Taking four in a row after being down 3-0, something no MLB team had ever done before.

I still credit Kevin Millar for setting the tone when he said, "Just don't let us win today....".

Yes, Millar's cheerful bravado before Game 4 is an amazing thing to behold. And he was instrumental in the comeback.

I'd certainly buy him a drink if I ever see him in a bar.

Ortiz was a better hitter, Yaz was a better all-round player.

I’m ok with that assessment.

But if you were ranking the best players in MLB, would Ortiz be only two places behind Yaz?

Or not at all like 67.

Indeed. It was even shorter then that of the 1981 to 2011 era.

A lot hard to hit 17 playoff HRs in so few games.

Wow. Late 40s. Various rumors about cause of death but all speculation. I can't remember: was he associated with PEDs? or is it just the name that makes me think that?

(Never mind: I see even the ESPN article, which I hadn't seen, answers this question.)

speculation is that his death was a suicide.

I'm sure we've all had people close to us do that. It's taken me years to accept (or try) that when someone does that, they are likely in such a place that there is no way even for someone who loves them dearly to 'reach' them. (rip Eloise).
