Anyone who wouldn't want Max Scherzer on their team is insane, of course, but I fear the amount of money he'll command may be too. And the Dodgers are just the team to pay it, with Kershaw probably not coming back.

Scherzer is one of the few that have defied the odds and maintained great value over a long term contract. That said, he's 37 years old. Unless he's coming to the Red Sox on a one (preferably) or two year deal, I would not take the risk.

I doubt even LA offers 3 years.

Brewers outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. will be exercising his $9.5MM player option to remain in Milwaukee for the 2022 season, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). Bradley would have received a $6.5MM buyout had he chosen to decline the option and re-enter the free agent market. Bradley and the Brewers share a $12MM mutual option for the 2023 season that contains an $8MM buyout.

Really glad the Sox didn't sign JBJ to this deal. He was basically guaranteed $17.5M for 22-23 Woof.

JBJ is highly overpaid. Not surprised he exercised his player option. No way he gets more than 2 million a year on the open market. He can't hit!!!!

Garcia had 29 HRs and an .820 OPS.

How much is a bag of balls worth. Are the golden balls?

I'll give credit to Desmond, he stayed home in 20-21 and started a Not for Profit. I think he's just going to retire.

To which Jamie Moyer says "That's it?"

Jamie Moyer only kept pitching because he had multiple personality disorder. One of his personalities was the bus from Speed. He thought that if he stopped pitching he would blow up.

At that point, may as well go 4/120.

If another team offers Scherzer more than $40M x 2, LA will likely go something like $36M x 3.

Captain Obvious says that dead arm thing of Max's is not to be taken lightly. We've seen what happens to pitchers who get pushed a little beyond their limits in the postseason.

Yes. I posted it.

A $40 Mill AAV for 2 years would really put a strain on the Sox budget.

Unless...that rumor about the Sox front office really wanting Scherzer had some truth in it.

Maybe John Henry is about ready to party again?

I have our winter spending budget at about $35-40M without going over or much over the tax line, so yes.

Unless henry agrees to spend $60-70M, this winter, Scherzer is not coming here.

From everything we've seen so far of Chaim Bloom: to go further in the postseason a year from now, he'll spend payroll on more roster depth, instead of paying big bucks to one old pitcher who broke down in this postseason.

We haven't seen enough out of Bloom to really know what he would do IMO. His first year, he had to slash payroll and deal Mookie/Price to get under the lux tax. In his second year, he needed to fill a roster that had some significant holes, but still stay near the cap. We don't know what it would look like if he was given the opportunity to go over. Maybe he does fill a lot of holes cheaply but splurges on one guy?

He's always spent sensibly -- or at least tried to make sensible moves. Which makes more sense in building a sustained contender: four years for Stroman or Gausman, or two for Scherzer?

And to those ends, do any longterm offers to a DH make sense? For example, an extension for JD or $75 for five years to Schwarber?

The former.

Honestly, I'd rather them spend extra to just keep Xander and Raffy signed. I like Schwarber, but I just don't know how much it would take to sign him. I think Castellanos would be a better pick up, but I think we could see a rotating cast of characters at DH once Casas is promoted this year.

Max is the "win now" move. A team like the Astros would need to do that. Maybe LAA? Dodgers just won a WS, so they might be inclined to let Max move on especially since they are still on the hook for Bauer.

I agree, especially if a universal DH drives up the price for guys like JD, Schwarbs, Nick C, Cruz, etc. Sluggers are not a priority on a team with thin pitching.

Merloni said this week he doesn't think the Sox will end with either JD or Kyle from Waltham.

I'm thinking they'd rather have Stroman and Gausman for just a little more $$/yr than Scherzer.
