Pirates DFAd former first rounder Colin Moran.

Left-handed hitting 1b/3b/LF with a career .781 OPS vs RHP. Given Bloom’s past successes with former first rounders, Moran might end up as the platoon mate with Dalbec, at least until Casas gets the call…

Kirby Yates to Braves for $8.25M/2.

That deal is all about year two. Yates is probably out until August of this year, isn’t he?

Not sure, but that makes the money seem right.

With the huge FA contracts being handed out it seem as if the Competitive Balance limit will have to be raised. More than $43 mil a year for Mad Max, Seager cashing in and Semien. Wow!

Seems like nearly all the big spending is being done by teams that missed the playoffs?

The Tigers were soooooo close..,

There's something strange going on...can't wait to find out what it is LOL

Hey, we both anticipated show off-seasons like the past two. I have mixed emotions. Nice to see it moving. But it would be nice to see Boston involved…

Baez to Detroit?

I really liked Baez, but it looks like we missed out.

When I look at these contracts, none jump out at me as being one I wished the Sox had done.

It’s going to be hard for the owners to scream for the need for parity with all these signings done by the losing teams.

You just have to wonder what all these signings have to do with what's expected in the new CBA.

Most likely a lot of players are just playing it safe. Bird in the hand and all that…

A lot of the FA big boys have been scooped up and some in long term risky contracts.(refer to https://www.espn.com/mlb/freeagents)

I opined earlier that the Sox management may be treading water this year, while they wait for a few existing contracts to expire or clarify. The presumption is that they plan to wait for 2023 to make a splash. By then the new player/owner agreement will be settled and the Sox can make a major push to get better. So far, by the lack of action by Bloom, it seems to give my opinion some credence.

Bloom was never going to splurge on a $43 million dollar pitcher or a $300 mil infielder (no matter how much "interest" is reported). But there's still time to be at least as good as last year -- on screen -- if he re-signs Schwarber and a good starting pitcher with no QO attached... Stroman? Rodon? Does anyone really believe any of those guys will be inked in Boston... by a CBO who doesn't sign guys for more than two years?

Me neither (is this just the wrong decade to join talksox?)...

The cost of good pitching in AAVs: Gausman $22M, Ray $23M, Verlander $25M. Stroman won't settle for less than fair market value, and he shouldn't. Rodon may have to, because of his injury-risks, but someone will pay him more than ERod. If Eovaldi has another solid showing in '22, is there any doubt he'll a $20M free agent starter in a year?

It does look more and more like 2023 might be the "splurge winter," but I still think we'll spend a significant amount, this winter.

If the reports are true, we were in on Baez to the end, then I think that shows we have at least $20M in this winter's winter checkbook. I know that's a big assumption, but I doubt all we do are Wacha -type additions.

It's being reported that Baez is getting $140M/6. That's just over $23M a year.

I was thinking $105-110/5, but it looks like prices have risen across the board.

Am I the only one thinking Seager getting $325M/10 is insane?

I'm fine with players making a ton of money, but this one seems way out of whack.

I can see the logic in the Sox pursuing someone like Baez, but I can also see why the Sox are not going after any of these expensive shortstops. They do still have Bogaerts, after all, and might be the richest teams in need of a shortstop next winter when X reached free agency.

Right now, the Sox are probably seven s deep in the rotation, with Sale, Eovaldi, Whitlock/Houck, Pivetta, Wacha, Seabold and Crawford. And then maybe Winckowski as the 8th guy ready. So maybe just 2b (Cesar Hernandez?) and a couple relief pitchers to fill out the roster.

The contract given to Barnes (2.5 fWAR in the past 3 years) is looking fairly representative now for relievers like him, given it’s very close to the one given to a Hector Neris (2.3 fWAR in the past 3 years). But it’s still probably less than we see go for Stroman. And possibly less than the extremely risky Carlos Rodon.

So maybe the Sox grab a reliever or redo from the Archie Bradley/Mychal Givens types. One name I might think is in Bloom’s radar is the very underrated Oliver Drake…

No, I think it's insane too.

We’ll Moon none of your Red Sox predictions have come true, or should I say wishes unless you want to take credit for Whacka. Some of the other teams are playing fantasy baseball, and the Sox are just sitting there watching these other teams get better with these outrageous contracts.

Right, it just seems weird that teams like the Tigers and Rangers are the ones doing the signing.

But are we really worried about the Tigers and Rangers and Mets getting better?

Do you have a source that the Sox were waiting for 2023 to "make a splash"?

They reset last year and with a much stronger FA class this year one would assume they plan on making a splash this year. The majority of high end talent is still out there. It's still November.

Not sure if the majority are still out there any more.

No you're not, but I'm not surprised. Every time I see FA predictions my natural inclination is to assume it's too little because players almost always get paid more than us fans think they will.

It's what I love about the banter in here. If Seager came up through the Sox system people would be starting threads about the Sox signing him for 200/10 thinking that will do it. It's interesting to see these deals before the CBA, my guess is whatever is not in agreement whatever it may be that both sides suspect player salary inflation is not going to come down.
