Bloom is going to build depth to the roster. He may not ever add the top tier of talent, but he's going to make sure players 20 - 40 on the 40 man are all solid options. Over a 162 game season, that's how you stay competitive. It may not pay out in the playoffs, but some people on here still posit that it's all a crapshoot anyway.

@ChrisCotillo

Red Sox have until 8 pm ET tonight to tender contracts to these players (and some other, less notable guys).

Not expecting any non-tenders from them, but there are always surprises this time of year.

Devers

Renfroe 7.6M?

Pivetta

Verdugo

Plawecki 2M?

Brasier

Arroyo

Taylor

The Michael Wachas of the world.

There is also the trade route, but seeing these mega contracts, one has to wonder what trade asks are going to be.

I erased the names from the list provided to reflect who I think we might make a play for- not a wish/ not a prediction:

Schwarber

Taylor

Stroman

Rodon

Kershaw

Greinke

Some are rather doubtful.

I thought he did a pretty good job building up the bottom of our 40 man and even beyond the 40, but I do still see 5-7 names that could be upgraded.

I was hoping we'd add 4-5 solid players and push everyone else down by attrition, and squeeze out the bottom few players by trade or DFA.

With a lot of players being non-tendered today, the list of free agents could get a little more interesting.

Tyler Rogers? Ryan Yarborough? Manny Margot? Ramiel Tapia? Kevin Newman? Adam Duvall?

Mostly role players, but some of these guys are very good on those roles…

Would you sign Kershaw to a one year deal?

Lots of mileage and his share of injuries, but he’s still only 33….

With so few options left, not counting trade targets, I'd seriously think about it.

I guess I need to raise my cost numbers to reflect reality.

I'd rather sign Rodon, 29 next month, than Kershaw, who'll be 34 in Spring Training. Both are injury risks, but the 5 WAR guy may actually be cheaper than the Hall of Famer who's looking at Scherzer's deal and thinking, "I was as good as him not too long ago -- and I'm five years younger."

Just guessing, but Kershaw may be too proud to sign for one year to show his stuff, and if it's two years, he'll want Verlander pay. Rodon, who's never made $5M per, may be ecstatic with the same AAV as Gausman and Ray...

How do you know they haven’t tried?

Yes, none of us have inside knowledge on this. Maybe they are pushing hard to extend Devers and Bogey?

Greinke on a one year deal could be fine.

I'd be ok with Schwarber long term or a 4 year deal for Taylor.

I would. 1/25?

I think Rodon is a much higher IL risk.

Maybe that’s why they haven’t spent much money.

"Could be fine" - nicely put.

I think they are also waiting to see who is non-tendered.

Yes. Maybe they have already. My point was trying "extra hard" to sign Devers.

"Devers Forevers!"

Source: Red Sox have signed infielder Rob Refsnyder to a minor-league deal.

30-year-old former Yankee spent 2021 with Twins, appeared in 51 games.

"Hey, Bloom. You did ok last year, but can you try extra hard this offseason?"

"Ok."

"If you got time to lean, you got time to clean."

"Ok. Sorry."

I mentioned Greinke or Verlander on short deals, earlier in the off season. I know their ages are high, but the short terms take away some of the risk.

I don't see Schwarber as a fit, unless we trade Dalbec or an OF'er (Renfroe?). I doubt we do either.

I'm not sure Taylor will be worth what he gets paid, but looking at the going rates, I guess we'll have to pay big to get value.

I know. I make fun of this kind of thing when others do it, and here I am saying silly things like that.

My favorite is when people say something like this, "Cora needs to sit down with Kike and tell him he needs to get on base more often."

And he really needs to have a chat with JD about swinging at those low outside breaking balls.

Cora needs to tell the players they need to bear down and hit better when it counts.

Yes, he did a terrible job in that department in games 4-6 of the ALCS.

Schwarber is a stretch this year, but he'll be DH going forward when JD leaves next offseason. He seemed to fit really well with the clubhouse. You can play him at 1b for 1/2 a year until Casas is ready. Maybe he has a full year at 1b because Casas isn't called up until 2023?

Maybe they bring Schwarber in for LF and decide to non-tender Renfroe?

So, Dalbec is written out of the picture?
