That's 19 roster spots taken up by "DD" guys. Are you referring to 15 openings on the 40 man?

Yes, on the 40, but all 9 he added last winter played on the 26. (Andriese and Marwin were axed and Santana was up and down.)

In 2020, Bloom added over 26 players before and during the season to try and fill the 40 man and many ended up playing on the 26. In a 60 game season, we played 19 position players and 28 pitchers. Here were the ones added by Bloom (in order of most PAs or IP):

Verdugo

Pillar

Peraza

Plawecki

Arauz

Moreland (re-signed)

Arroyo

Munoz

Puello

Grullon

Lucroy

Perez (IP leader in '20)

Weber

Valdez

Mazza

Godley

Springs

Brice

Osich

Covey

Kickham

Stock

Hart

Pivetta (deadline add)

Triggs

Leyer

Tapia

But he didn't go drop $18mill on a closer!!!

I'm on record saying he never will and never should. I also hope he'll at least meet us in the middle and get some at least reliable relievers that the manager can trust so he doesn't have to constantly use starters in late innings of the postseason. Most likely, we'll just have to be patient, because most of those guys take time to develop...

Counting the revolving door of mediocre AAA arms is cheat mode. Grullon replaced Lucroy. Verdugo was brought in via trade of their best everyday player, same with Pivetta. If he's creating self inflicted holes, obviously he is making more work for himself. It has little to do with what was left in the cupboard. Counting Mitch as filling a hole is also pushing it IMO. Puello was barely used.

The only guys on here that were truly added and actually mattered to the roster were Perez, Pillar, Plawecki, Arauz and Valdez. Not a murderers row of great additions. Plawecki is the best of the bunch and I could see him getting replaced this offseason.

Just make Houck the closer.

Okay, take 10 off my list and it's still more holes than I said.

There were obviously 10+ serious holes that needed filling that were expected to be part of the 26 man for a significant time. You listed 22 slots with 17 names that included 3 question marks and Chavis. That's 13 holes by your own admission on just the 26.

Is this better?

This is 19 with no Verdugo & Pivetta and some players combined into 1.

Pillar & Puello count as one

One of Houck or Whitlock can close. The other will probably become a starter...

That seems to be the best plan.

Don't pay big for a closer.

Reduce SP addition costs.

I'd still sign an additional SP'er, even if ERod comes back via a QO.

Also among the Oaland A's pending arbitration cases is Lou Trivino. They will deal him somewhere. Book it...

Who would OAK want from us?

Downs?

Duran?

Arroyo?

or would they demand Casas?

You're going to have to show me that math. 25-17=13?

Yes, the org just needs to pick one.

Trivino has a BTV value of 1.1 so...

Trivino for Kutter Crawford

I meant for Montas 39.6 or Manaea 18.5, but Trivon is probably worth more than 1.1.

We also don't need to throw 30 million dollars per annum contracts at players who are playing the position our best players/top prospects play at.

Unless of course Devers or Casas is headling a package for a true TOTRS to pair with Sale, then it makes sense.

I would be more pissed if the SOX traded Devers than I was when they traded Betts.

It's 26 to start with. I'll walk you through it...

You had 17 listed but 3 were question marks and 1 was Chavis.

So, 17-3 (???'s) = 14.

14-1 (Chaviz)= 13.

26-13=13

If it's Devers last year, when they trade him, I wouldn't view it anydifferently.

Part of building a strong core is to make sure the players you're talking about arrives at about same time. It would seem Casas is way ahead of say Mayer from being major league ready. Not to say it won't happen.

If that is the plan then Devers should be traded for high end starting pitcher who is under team control for 4+ years. Unless of course Sox consider him to be the cornerstone of future in which case Devers should be extended.

Extending Devers should be a no-brainer. He's 24 and his best years are ahead of him. Right now he's the best player on the team.

I'm the driver of the Devers Forevers Bandwagon.

BTV accepted Dalbec, Duran & Downs for Montas, Trivino and Buelvas.

I know, it goes against the no 3-D trade rule, but still...

I don't mind sitting in that wagon.....make it so gigantic that the present value ends up around $25M.....

Chris Sale:

"I was good for 5, then I sucked for 1."

"But I left my nuts out there on that mound tonight, that's for damn sure."

Sale will be good next year.

I wonder if I'd hold onto Downs and see if he recoups any value in 2022.
