Even if Bloom made mistakes at the trade deadline, and I think he did make mistakes, the organization seems to be headed in the right direction. I like the talent that Bloom brought in including Yorke, Blaze, and Mayer (I guess Mayer was an easy pick, though). I'm assuming the Schwarber trade was made for the long term benefit of the offense--the Red Sox will likely extend him. The Red Sox need someone to replace JD Martinez, who is showing signs of decline. The Red Sox have some young talented pitchers, including Whitlock (Bloom), Houck, Pivetta (Bloom), Seabold (Bloom) and Bello. Groom, Mata, and Song could turn into something too.

The Red Sox will have Devers, Bogaerts, and Schwarber leading the offense next year, getting contributions from Duran, Verdugo, and Renfroe, and that should be a really good offense. They will have Sale and Eovaldi leading the rotation with a ton of depth behind the top two starters. I guess the bullpen is a big question mark for next year, and Bloom will need to get that figured out. We don't know the Red Sox's long term plans for Houck and Whitlock -- many are assuming they will start but do we know that for certain? If Whitlock and Houck are starters next year, the bullpen seems rather thin with Ottavino gone and of course Whitlock moving to the rotation.

E-Rod is a big question mark going forward. Do the Red Sox resign him or not?

Let's say the Red Sox resign E-Rod:

1.Sale

2.Eavoldi

2.E-Rod

4.Pivetta

5.Houck

6.Whitlock

----

AAA:

Seabold

Bello

The Red Sox could alternate between a 5 man rotation and 6 man rotation. Whitlock won't be able to throw 200 innings and so they will need to build up his innings gradually.

But in this scenario, the Red Sox will need to spend some money on free agent relievers.

good recap BUT

How long do we baby Whitlock? Tell me why he can't pitch 200 innings? He'll be 26, 3 years removed from TJ. Why do we baby these athletes?

Get me a MAN. Tired of these wusses. And I'm the president of Whitlock fan club.

Of course with average start of 5 IP they would need to start 40 games and that's not happening.

Has there been a John Henry sighting lately? is he in Boston? Is he in the country?

Personally I don't blame him. Just about everything he says gets used against him. How many times have we heard about how he reversed his position on the 'no pitchers over 30' thing? I think I read about it again here today!

Whitlock only through 205 innings combined in 4 minor league seasons. A 200 IP season at the MLB level might not be in his best interest right now..

Honestly, a little surprised it was Marwin.

Nah. He's the right pick. Would others have been as good a DFA pick? Probably. None of Dalbec, Cordero, or Arauz impresses, but they are all 6 or more years younger.

@redsoxstats

With Marwin gone that opens up #12 for Schwarber if he wants it

I thought Friday the 13th was bad for me, but Marwin got DFA'd because he wears the wrong jersey number.

Santana is on the IL. Can he be DFA'd?

Sure.

He can be DFAd, traded, or released. He just can’t be loved.

(Of course it wouldn’t open up a spot on the active roster.)

Sale: let's have him a few more times in AAA, what's the rush...

Schwarber: throw his softball swing to the wolves...

I would have DFAd Santana and demoted Cordero…

As a waiver wire pickup in 2019, someone somewhere adores Danny Santana for helping them win their fantasy league. 915 OPS after 9/7/19.

Marwin's -0.5 WAR was the 14th worst Red Sox season since 1990 of players with at least 250 plate appearances. He could be passed by Dalbec.

The worst:

Hatcher 92

Tony Clark 02 (YUCK)

O'Leary 96

Hanley 15

Hatteberg 01

Pablo 15

Tek 11

Quintana 93

Pena 93

Pierzynski 14 (******* who should never have been a Red Sox)

It would be reasonable to talk about plans and suggestions for 2022 under a separate string where those comments could be collected together while 2021 comments made under this string.

I don't like starting the next year's thread until we are out of it, but maybe that's not a good idea.

@bradfo

Kyle Schwarber in lineup tonight; Marwin Gonazlez DFA'd

I am truly shocked.

Cora must be crying.

And I’m sure Mrs. Santana also has some feelings, but it doesn’t change the fact that his days are numbered…

To recap:

* Schwarber being activated, Marwin Gonzalez DFA tonight

* Verdugo rejoining club tonight, Houck optioned (until Tuesday)

* Vázquez, Sale will be activated tomorrow

* Arroyo, Santana, Brasier coming next week most likely

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe she'd be happier with him away too.

Once again there is no mercy shown to those jettisoned for non-performance. Now that Marwin is gone, it's Cordero and Santana waiting for the next fall of the axe.

Robles may go first.

Davis may be close, too.
