The Yanks gave up a rattled reliever and a prospect who is likely to be a pen arm and is buried to get the financial cushion to bring a team leader back and have some extra funds for a mid season acquisition. When the Yanks make that mid season move to address whatever their needs become, you can thank Bloom for helping them out.

Now the Sox got something here, but it’s only a reasonably fair deal if Ottavino performs in Boston and can be handed off for a good return.

Didn't I read that the Yankees were afraid they were over the tax limit and traded Ottavino in order to get back under? Who says they have enough money to make a midseason acquisition?

At any rate, Bloom said it best. You can't play scared. We (Bloom and I) aren't afraid of the Yankees.

Yes, we helped the Yankees out. The Yankees also helped the Sox out. Your Yankee bias is keeping you from seeing that.

Per Fangraphs, BABIP is 375

Hmm. I knew that.

I can tell you exactly what happened. I initially typed .374 by mistake. Then I went back and corrected the 4 to a 5. Or so I thought. Apparently, I put the 5 in the wrong spot.

It's a difference of one hit every 50 at bats. They're close enough...

Ottavino is a hard throwing pitcher with stupid movement on his pitches. He just seemed to come up small from the Springer homerun forward. Yes, last year he gave up 6ER in a 0IP performance and it skewed his stats. But you also cannot just remove that game, a game we were winning that he turned into a loss on his own. Most of the time a reliever gives up a run or two and he gets the blown save, yet it was more a collective effort. In that one game, Ottavino bombed the team's performance and cost us a game. Removing that true -1WAR game is revisionist.

Do I think Ottavino is a 5ERA reliever in Boston? No I do not. Do I think he will do far better on a team that isn't going anywhere? Yes I do. Do I think he will do far better in Boston than he would have in NY? Yes I do. Ottavino moving to Boston will be a boon for the sox for sure. I doubt he justifies his contract, but getting a prospect (albeit a future reliever) and then having the chance to dump off Ottavino in July for a good prospect haul is the upside here and I think Bloom adds to his prospect cache in doing so. I see the benefit for the sox, clearly, but it is far further down the road. For the Yanks, the sox give them the flexibility to add one of their team leaders back in Gardner AND now have the cushion to make an addition in July. If that addition leads to a World Series, then this deal could be the impetus to #28, which I think would stick in your craws a bit more than the prospects of the potential future production of the kids you get back

Take a look at Ottavino's peripherals. He pitched much better in 2020 than his ERA indicates. At the same time, he didn't pitch as well in 2019 as his ERA indicates. Is it reasonable to think Ottavino could be a mid 3 ERA pitcher? Is it reasonable to think he could be worth 1 WAR? Yes, to both questions, meaning that Ottavino would be worth the $8 mil whether we get any prospects back for him or not.

And that doesn't even count German.

I hope he's lights out and they deal him at the deadline for some good prospects.

I hope he's lights out and then gets the last out in the ALCS against the Yankees.

I put a period at the end, declarative statement. Odorizzi for three years is an investment for both improving the now, and also helping stabilize the future.

Problem is, he may be waiting for Bauer to sign, thus driving up his price as the next best thing for bidders who miss out on Trevor. Second problem for those who think the Sox should wait another year before spending more: there may not be any free agent starting pitchers next winter better than Jake's combined age (30) and pedigree (All-Star in '19).

FTR, I am 100% against signing Bauer to a long term deal (5+ years). His age is not a plus.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter one way or the other.

I just had to share my double typo fiasco because I thought I was doing such a good job of fixing the first one.

My only question is who was the idiot that left a reliever on the mound without recording an out while giving up 6 earned runs? I would love to see Aaron Judge throw sidearm.

I’d be willing to bet the following reliever let an inherited runner (or three) score...

Nope.

The last batter he faced, Danny Jansen, cranked a grand slam.

The next guy, Luis Cessa, got the next two guys out.

I was half kidding. For some reason Jacksonianmarch wanted to make a point about something. It went over my head.....

I have to admit to being somewhat optimistic.

We've definitely improved our SR, BP, & IF. We've improved our offense, and if JDM & Beni can re-find their swings, We've got what can be a pretty potent offense.

Perhaps with Cora back at the helm, they will rediscover that old 2018 fire?

God, that seems a lifetime ago.

I'm embracing being the underdog too. Really our rightful place in ALE mlb history.

So... f*** the Yankees & let's get this party started. Yeh. I'd like a few more moves, but I'm ok with this.

Go Sox!

That's your second mistake this year, isn't it? ;)

Like Bob Ross would say, "it's not a mistake, just a happy little accident."

I think you are experiencing some COVID vaccine induced euphoria. This roster can’t compete with the Yankees or Blue Jays. At best we are competing with the Rays (who have gutted their rotation) and the Orioles for 3rd place.

The Sox rotation should be better than the Jays. Maybe that can push them over the top into 2nd place? I think a 3rd place finish is a reasonable expectation though.

I know the Rays tend to bounce back really well, but losing 3 starting pitchers (2 left, 1 injury) is hard to overcome as we all saw last year.

With the shift of Adam Ottavino's 2021 salary, Cot's Baseball Contracts now projects 2021 40-man CB payrolls of $201,961,667 for the Red Sox and $199,071,623 for the Yankees.

So the Sox edged closer to the luxury tax threshold while the Yankees retreated.

Jays have made several nice additions this winter and last year they added Ryu.

That was the Yanks intent for making the deal. Both will likely end up near the line.

The Jays have added some extremely good bats. But they need arms.

I don't get why they signed Semien. What happened to Bo Bichette?

Semien plays 2B, Bichette plays SS and Biggio plays third.

Vlad Jr. to 1B.

That Jays lineup is loaded from top to bottom. Here's hoping their pitchers are a bunch of garbage cans, otherwise they could be beating all our asses this season.

I watched those Jays in a Double A game a few years ago and it was clear that Toronto soon going to dominate the majors again in the near future. And it wasn't just that Vlad, Biggio and Bichette had famous dads... that day we saw Vlad and Cavan blast HRs out of the stadium, and Bo hit more liners than any of them.

The Jays biggest offensive weakness might be at DH, which seems like an ironic place to have one...

Jays rotation:

Ryu

Ray

Pearson

Roark

Stripling

Sox rotation:

Eovaldi

Erod

Richards

Perez

Pivetta (Sale midseason)

Aside from Sale, Ryu is the best pitcher listed. However, the Sox rotation has a good chance to be better than the Jays. Either rotation could exceed projections or even just turn to s***.

Rowdy seemed to play well whenever I saw him last year.

My remark wasn’t limited to starting pitching. The Jays have also added Springer and Semien and Yates and Chatwood. The Jays lineup will club our pitchers like baby seals.

And, we will club their pitching, too.

We added Richards and Ottavino compared to Yates and Chatwood.

Do you think our lineup is as good as the Jays’ lineup?
