@Joelsherman1

Frank German was ranked the #Yankees 24th best prospect by http://MLB.com. The RHP was the sweetener to get Bos to take back Ottavino’ contract. They essentially are buying a prospect to some degree.

German has a value of 1.0 on BTV.

BIG WHOOP!

Ottavino -5.3

We'd need $4M to break even, assuming we give them nothing.

@MikeMonaco_

Adam Ottavino

• HS in Brooklyn, college

@GoNUbaseball

• 1st-rounder 2006

• 2013-2019: 2.90 ERA, 378 IP, 459 K

• 2020: Take out 1 bad outing in Buffalo, and he had a 2.95 ERA the rest of the season

Put BTV down. It's giving you brain damage.

Rumor is Sox are picking up most if not all of the contract. If the Yanks shed $9mil for German, that’s a f***ing steal. Yanks were about $5-6 mil from the Lux tax line after getting Taillon. Shedding Ottavino should sneak us under $12-$15 mil. Yanks are expected to re-sign Gardner. Wondering if we take the savings and get another reliever or hold a cushion for a mid season acquisition.

I am willing to accept that Frank German may be worth more than "1."

Maybe Bloom sees something BTV does not.

BTV is my toy, and you can't have it!

FYI, this is a smart move for Bloom too. Ottavino is still a good reliever. He’s just been broken since Springer tagged him in the 2019 ALCS. Change of scenery to a team not likely to compete, and I bet he closes for you. If he does well, you ship him at the deadline. Ultimately it doesn’t help the fan base that you helped out your rival, but it does help build your farm

But we already have a converted closer -- Mary Richards. She's gonna make it after all.

1. Sox needed a closer.

2. Sox needed more farm arms.

3. Yankees wanted to save $$$.

Seems like a good move for both teams? I'd probably rather have Ottavino than the guys left in FA.

No, because she always freezes in place every time she throws to first...

I actually wanted the Sox to sign him before '19... but then I remember he was the missing piece that gave New York the greatest bullpen of all-time that never even made it to the World Series.

MLBTR reports we are paying $8M of his 2021 salary plus the $3M differed bonus in 2022. The lux tax hit will be about $8.1M.

He can be real good, and we get a prospect, too, but I'm skeptical.

I don't care if he blows 5 saves in April. Anybody is better than Barnes in the 9th inning

Barnes- Career OPS by inning

.655 7th inning (79 IP)

.688 8th inning (126 IP)

.690 9th inning (58 IP)

.754 5th inning (11 IP)

.793 6th inning (35 IP)

His career OPS against is .679- pretty close to his 9th inning OPS of .690, which is an OPS we would not want any of our batters to have.

I'm not saying I want Matt to be our closer, but there is still a chance he could do well in that role, if given another opportunity.

The trade was Ottavino and a prospect for ?

is this guy worth $8 million?

BTV has him at -5.3, so they must view him as worth $3.7M, since he's paid $9M.

I'd say he might be worth $6-9M, and maybe the prospect makes it an okay deal.

First trade between the rival Red Sox and Yankees since the trade deadline in 2014 when the Sox dealt infielder Stephen Drew and cash to the Yanks for infielder Kelly Johnson.

Only the second trade between the two clubs in the past 23 years.

Let's not go back to Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater.

We all remember the Mike Stanley trade 23+ years ago.

BTV is just a toy. You can't just look at Ottavino like he has zero value. If he has an average Ottavino year, he'll be the best guy in the pen.

This is a shocker . Came out of the blue with no previous rumors or anything. Ottavino at his best can be a big help in our bullpen. The question is : Can he shake off last year and regain his form at age 35 ? Stay tuned.

375 BABIP

3.52 FIP

Per SIERA and xFIP, he was better in 2020 than 2019.
