Call me crazy, but I'd still also like to see the Sox bring Rich Hill home. Kluber, Odorizzi, and Hill would be my preference.

Okay, you asked for it.

You are Crazy!

We'd lead the league in questionable SP'ers.

Only if he was willing to take a tiny base salary plus incentives for starts made.

Even so, you do NOT fill a slot that needs filling with Hill.

Yes, fine, sign him as possible rotation depth... not instead of solid starter.

If you're worried about the health of your starting pitching, Rich Hill is far more likely to be part of the problem than part of the solution...

The pitchers we acquire or talk about acquiring seem to fall into one or more of 4 categories:

1) Not good enough

2) Not durable enough

3) Not young enough

4) Not cheap enough

I just rechecked his stats. I didn't realize he only had 13 starts in 2019. Darn.

By 5pm today, Tomoyuki Sugano will haveto make a decision about what American team he will accept a deal from. Reportedy the Sox are still in the running, but no word about whether o rnot any team has reached his demands for a deal greater than the one fellow countryman Yusei Kikuchi received from the Mariners (4 yrs $56mill), which apparently Sugano wants.

As he has a 4 year offer with 3 opt outs already from the Yomiuri Giants, it does seem likely he will return to Japan and try again next year...

If Bloom thinks he can get Odorizzi at 13 mil per 3 years, you can bet he's opting out on a guy who wants 14 mil for 4.

If the Sox can get Odorizzi for 3 yrs / $39 mill, it should probably happen now...

Sugano > Odorizzi

My intuition. As I've previously stated, I don't like Odorizzi all that much.

What does he need to do to earn your love? He's pitched well in his career, his contract requests do not appear unreasonable, and he is probably very nice to his mother, even when she does not deserve it.

Also he probably owns a puppy. Or knows someone who does...

And he was an All-Star in, you know, the Major Leagues.

Well, nobody told me about the puppy thing.

Sugano > Odorizzi

Righthander Tomoyuki Sugano reportedly wants a more lucrative contract than the four-year, $56 million contract lefthander Yusei Kikuchi signed two years ago with the Seattle Mariners:

https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2021/01/boston-red-sox-face-thursday-deadline-to-reach-deal-with-tomoyuki-sugano-righty-still-weighing-return-to-japan.html

Kikuchi could be a comp for Sugano ... or not.

At any rate, here are the 2021 Steamer projections for Jake Odorizzi and Kikuchi:

JO 28 GS, 4.64 ERA, 1.8 WAR

YK 29 GS, 4.18 ERA, 2.2 WAR

... and the 2021 ZiPS projections:

JO 27 GS, 4.09 ERA, 2.6 WAR

YK 24 GS, 4.37 ERA, 1.7 WAR

Sugano is 31 years old, Odorizzi 30 years old and Kikuchi 29 years old.

He's not great, but he's been pretty steady:

Not counting 2020...

28-33 starts for 6 straight seasons.

159-188 IP each of those 6 seasons

ERA+ between 95 and 117 the last 5 seasons with only that one season below 102 (2018).

His WHIP has been between 1.15 and 1.24 the last 5 years, except in 2018 (1.345).

His career ERA is 3.92 and FIP of 4.12.

He walks a few too many batters (3.1 BB/9), but he K's close to 9 per 9 IP (8.6).

From 2015-2020, he is 32nd in IP.

Out of 77 pitchers with 600+ IP in the last 6 years, he places:

39th in fWAR at 11.6 (about 1.9 per season)

25th in WHIP at 1.23 (same as Trevor bauer, J Paxton and Sonny Gray)

35th in ERA- at 92

40th in K-BB% at 14.5%

65th in xFIP at 4.53

If you figure 30 number one starters in MLB, ranking 39th in WAR could be viewed as him being a solid #2 starter.

I'd say he is easily a solid #3.

If only 77 pitchers qualified, you can't assume that there are 30 number 1's that qualified, unless your assumption is that few 3rd starters and no 4th or 5th starters qualified.

OTOH he only made 3 mill last year and pitched decently. He has actually pitched pretty well since 2015.

Much like Eovaldi, the problem with Hill is not the talent...

So.. you on board now?

Also my understanding is Sugano is more of a Cat Guy...
