How did you feel being traded like that, then being ridiculed for being on the wrong side of a bad trade?

Greg Harris was ambidextrous

Yes, and he had a glove that could be worn on either hand, but the Sox never allowed him to swap arms.

Trivia question - name one other ambidextrous pitcher for the Red Sox. Hint: He pitched in Boston in the current millennium...

Schilling may end up in the Hall.

The Bagwell deal hurt, for sure.

How about the best 4 deals in Modern Sox history?

Pedro

VTek & D Lowe

The Dodger Dump

Schilling

Any others close?

Andrew Miller for Eduardo Rodriguez... good reliever for a minor leaguer who became a top of the rotation starter.

Another debacle I try to keep buried in my subconsciousness that occasionally resurfaces like a flashback from a bad trip: George Scott for Cecil Cooper (10-year regular in Milwaukee, '77-86, 3rd in first baseman WAR behind HOFers Murray and Carew).

Yes, they traded Scott to Milwaukee so he could have his prime years with them, then traded Cooper to Milwaukee to get Scott back for his post-prime years. Absolutely brilliant.

Those are beauties. Some quick web research:

The Sox traded pitching prospect Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. to the Expos for Martinez. Pavano had one decent season in a Montreal uniform.

In November 2003, the Diamondbacks traded Schilling to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Jorge de la Rosa, Casey Fossum, Mike Goss, and Brandon Lyon. The classic "4 guys you'll never hear about again" for an ace.

I don't even have to do a lookup on Varitek and Lowe - the infamous Heathcliff Slocumb. Ha ha ha I can't believe they took him.

The Dodger Dump helped us a lot, but to be fair the Dodgers got some value out of those players too.

Yeah, getting E-Rod for Andrew Miller is up with these as well, given how good E-Rod has become.

De La Rosa pitched in the majors for 15 years. Fossum kicked around for a few years, but his best years were with the Sox before he was dealt. Lyon was a reliver who pitching in the majors for the following decade (26 saves in 08). Speedy OFer, Goss, never got above AA.

To get 3 major leaguers out of that deal is better than what it could have been.

Tomoyuki Sugano's 2020 repertoire

9% 86.5 Cutter

6% 78.9 Curveball

Wow, MLB is saying everything should start on time this year and a full schedule played. Finally some good news.

I mean, they forced a season at a time when everything was closed down last year. Now that all the other leagues are completely open, it'd look really dumb if MLB just sat around with their thumbs up their butts now.

I do always expect MLB to make the exact wrong decision though.

On December 5th McAdam was the first to report that the Red Sox "intend to be aggressive in their pursuit" of Sugano. Since then it's just been an echo chamber of "yes the Sox are interested" reports. Seems like Japan/TOR/SF/BOS are options, but no real clue if Sox are finalists.

15 years, okay didn't realize that.

Well we just signed Matt Andriese. https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2020/12/23/red-sox-sign-free-agent-pitcher-matt-andriese. 5th starter?

He's the new and improved Ryan Weber...

And we are keeping Weber around just in case. Also, need to fill AAA with AAAA guys so that WOO can make the playoffs in their first year.

Assuming they have a first year this year...

If they don't, they may as well kill another 30 MiLB clubs.

From Jeff Passan: Giants/Sox not expected to pay Sugano what he desires. Jays/Angels remain question marks.

Yasiel Puig didn't ultimately end up playing during the 2020 MLB season, but the 30-year-old reportedly has a slew of teams interested in his services for 2021.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles "appear to have varying levels of interest" in the former All-Star.

Puig has such obvious pluses and even more obvious minuses. But if there is one outfielder out there worth pushing Verdugo to CF for...

It was tough, but Lyle became a beast with Yanks and they already were upset about Ruth.

In some ways, you had it worse than Buckner.

Dave Green of NBC Sports is reporting the Red Sox have, and I quote, “serious interest” in Jake Odorizzi.

Article is available on yahoo at https://www.yahoo.com/sports/report-red-sox-serious-interest-215557301.html

No idea what “serious interest” means, but like previous acquisitions Renfroe and Andriese, Odorizzi is a former Tampa Ray...

That article references a John Tomase column that predicts the Red Sox will, among other things, sign Jake Odorizzi and Corey Kluber:

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/21-fearless-predictions-2021-boston-red-sox?b

Would that be enough for the Red Sox rotation?

I think this would be about the most we could expect.

We need some resources for the pen and maybe CF/2B.

While i think Odorizzi is the best bet to have a good 2021 from start to finish between Sale, Odorizzi and Kluber, it doesn’t help the health questions that’ll be out there as he had a terrible and injury filled 2020. That being said, a lot of pitchers had a terrible 2020 and none of Jake’s injuries should linger. Prior to 2020, he made 28 starts per season for 6 consecutive years. Odorizzi is an effective back end rotation pitcher who is pretty much a twice through the lineup guy and then get the pen warm. He’s averaged around 5IP per start for most of his career. His K rate has fluctuated from very good (10 per 9) down to below average (7’s per 9). He’s a fly ball pitcher, which may not be a great mix for Fenway and he gives up a ton of HR’s on average. The glass half full people will point to a sub 1 HR/9IP, 10+ K/9IP and sub 2 BB/9IP 2019 and see a pitcher who is breaking out. The glass half empty can see a guy who doesn’t go deep into games who would come to a team with a horrible pen and see a bad matchup.

The one thing I can foresee for Odorizzi is a 1 year deal and the Sox can either use him for a surprise playoff run or really cash in on him if he shows he’s healthy at the deadline

Bloom is all about value, and Odorizzi does look like a value play here who will be a cinch to get rotation time. Many teams would be looking at him as a 5th starter, and that’s a dicey situation should he have a rough start. In Boston, he’d be a 2 and would get a ton of chances to continue on if he starts slow

On the value front, Kluber and Odorizzi would be short term players who could flame out entirely and be jettisoned after 21 or they could show value and be trade assets at a minimum. If I was Kluber or Odorizzi and I had the choice between NY and Boston, I’d choose boston due to the lack of rotation depth
