"Oh, they aren't signing Lester because they will use that money on Scherzer." LOL Nope.

"Sox have no 1b of note in the minors. Napoli is gone soon enough. Sox need a young 1b. Why not sign Abreu?" LOL Nope.

On the Scherzer signing: I really liked him, but I understood the thinking, at the time, that the following year's SP'er market was deeper and some felt Price was a better bet than Scherzer. The idea was build the Offense one year and the Pitching the next.

Big mistake, especially since they wiffed on both "O" signings and Scherzer ended up being twice the pitcher Price turned out to be.

When they signed Panda and Hanley within 24 hours of each other, most people on here were just confused as to what the plan was. Turns out, there was no plan.

When we signed HRam, I was okay, but I thought he was going to play 3B. The Panda signing was messed up in too many ways to discuss again.

The two signings were announced on the same day, so you had little time to hold that thought LOL

I actually did not find about the Pablo signing until the next day, as I recall.

It had a nice whiplash to it. The opposite of this offseason.

There was a plan. Just not s good plan...

I think the plan had merit, but they just signed the wrong "O" guys.

It's not like everyone they acquired that offseason was a bust. Porcello was a very good acquisition...

Another "what if?"

What if we had just taken Verdugo and Graterol

(3.41 ERA & 0.900 WHIP in 2020 plus a better post season)?

What about Verdugo & Maeda

(6-1 2.70 with a 0.750 WHIP)?

MLB Trade Values:

46.6 Maeda

21.3 Downs

15.0 Graterol

I thought the plan made sense, but execution was off, bigtime on 2 of the top 3 additions.

No, the problem was bringing in both Hanley AND Pablo and not just one of them.

Was the problem the plan or the players they chose? (Try not being a Monday morning QB on this answer.)

Had we signed:

SP: Porcello

3B: HRam or Headley

OF: Nelson Cruz or even Melky Cabrera

...we might have not felt the plan was so bad. Then, go for the ace the next year (Price or Greinke).

It was signing two 3B's.

B-I-N-G-O!

Plus, pushing HRam to the OF ended up getting him hurt (talk about Monday morning QB'ing!)

It wasn't just a bad plan. It was two bad contracts. Both players hit the skids simultaneously.

right out of the gate!

HRam was decent year 2. We should have traded him after that season.

This is something we discussed the day of the deal. Not really MMQB.

Hanley's first month with the Sox was epic. He was an absolute monster before he injured his shoulder...

I meant about the injury to HRam- not that he might have gotten hurt at 3B, too.

He wasn't exactly the picture of health at the time anyway.

Thanks Larry!

Actually, I understand the rationale behind signing Panda. He should have never been given the contract he was given, but I understand why they did it.

In hindsight, it was two bad contracts. At the time, I didn't think Hanley's contract was that bad.

Oh we're back to that offseason. Scherzer and Cruz were clearly the best players the Sox could have added, and I am still mystified to this day we threw money at Hanley and Panda instead.

Beni still has a chance to put up some great offensive numbers.

I've never been a big Beni fan, but selling low seems a bit rash.

I think there is a 50/50 shot to get Beni off to a good start.

That's when you decide.
