Yes, I'm assuming we eventually sign someone to the 40 man roster and need to make room.

My guess is we add 3-5 players to the 40 man roster. We may trade some away to make room, but I'm thinking we will end up DFA'ing 2-3 guys by opening day- maybe more.

There's also the Pedey situation.

Well, I predicted the Sox would sign Porcello, Hand, Bradley, Brad Miller, and Enrique Gonzalez. If they do all that, they would have to DFA at least 4 people - most likely from the set of Mazza, Wilson, Payamps, Chatham, Valdez, Springs, Brice and Brewer. Now if Bloom asks me who should go, I would say Mazza, Payamps, Springs and Wilson. But I would also tell him there are no wrong answers, except maybe Chatham.

I am not sure how the Pedroia situation will get handled. He could also be DFA'd with 0 risk...

So Bloom drafted a Yankee pitching prospect; does anyone else ever think NY (media, fans, franchise) may overrate their minor leaguers a tad, almost as much as Boston?

You know it's a cold stove season (so far) when MLB Trade Rumors Red Sox' top story is Casey Kelley, ex-prospect, just signed with Minnesota via Korea...

Whose overrating the Sox farm? It's universally disparaged as being in the bottom third of MLB...

The Sox have overrated their own. But now with three more Rule V guys, they're going to have to work out compensation going the other way, right? Or can we carry three Arauz guys this year -- and, you know, contend -- like the front office insists?

When?

The Sox farm is improving, but I haven't heard much of anyone in the organization actually overrating it. If they have reluctance to deal prospects, it is more likely because they know they are going to need some minimum wage player at some point to balance out the loftier salaries.

Arauz no longer carries Rule 5 status, as he spent a full season in MLB. He can play in the minors somewhere. And the Rule 5 players taken in the minor league portion of the draft (Reed and Ort) require no compensation besides a $24,500 check delivered to their former teams. Both Reed and Ort can (and will) play in the Red Sox minor leagues this year.

Now with Whitlock, he still has to spend a full season in the majors to lose his Rule 5 status. If he spends any time on the IL this season, it does not count and he would have to make up that time in 2022. Or the Sox could work out a trade or cash compensation with the Yankees...

Ok, I didn't know that Reed and Ort can play in Boston's minors, but not Whitlock, even though he's also a minor leaguer.

The famous Clemente draft story is that the Dodgers tried to hide him in their minors by not playing him, but Branch Rickey was working for Pittsburgh by then, so there was no fooling them.

The minor league draftees do NOT need to stay on the 26 man roster all year like Arauz did.

Players taken in the MiLB portion of the Rule 5 draft require only financial compensation. They're usually not any level of prospect and rarely even make MLB. Only one player taken in the MiLB phase of the Rule 5 draft has ever played in an MLB All Star game, and he played in just one. (And that was former Sox RHP Alexi Ogando.) I learned all this yesterday.

As Whitlock was taken in the MLB portion, he cannot play in the minors until he gets a full year of MLB service time, unless he has to do a rehab stint after an injury. Or unless the Sox work out a deal with the Yankees to keep him...

There is always a good market for GMs that win.

A baseball team hiring Dave Dombrowski to win a championship when they have no money is like a publishing company hiring Aaron Judge to write a book about his World Series experiences.

Carrabis can tweak the Yankees with the best of them. Bonus in this tweet - he gets in a nice shot at Dombrowski as well.

LOL.

This will be a test on just how good DD is, as a GM, if he never gets to spend, spend, spend.

Let's see, if he decimates their farm system to get to the promise land or as close as possible.

If they have any worthwhile prospects, Vazquez is headed to Philadelphia...

DD was four times baseball exec of the year. He and Theo Epstein are among the few MLB execs who has built two World Series winners with two different franchises. In addition he is largely credited with building the Marlins team that won it all in 2003.

The Phillies went after him aggressively after he had refused two previous offers from them. As was said by ESPN, Dombrowski was brought on to retool not rebuild. Given DD's track record and the fact that Phillies ownership was persistent in the pursuit of him they know exactly what they are getting in Dombrowski. They and their fans could care less about their farm system. The Phillies need to win now and they don't give a damn how many prospects DD trades so long as he gets them to the playoff and to the world series as soon as possible.

Very hypocritical way to evaluate. If Dombrowski gets credit for Beinfest’s championship team, then Cherington deserves credit for DD’s...

Uh-oh.

How is it hypocritical? Fact DD largely put that team together and they won the year after DD left. If you want to give Cheringtton credit for a team winning two years after he left, no one is stopping you.

The fact is that both deserve credit.

He does get credit on here.

The Phillies are shedding payroll right now. This is the wrong move

The Phillies just need this to be a PR move through season ticket sales...

Not from everyone, and not from Nick.

As I get older my memory is not as good as it once was, but I never recall posting that BC doesn't deserve some credit for the Red Sox past success. So please stop mischaracterizing my opinion. To be perfectly clear the decision to bring in DD was Henry's. He obviously felt BC was lacking to some degree or another. In any case that is all in the past. DD and BC both now work for other franchises. Both face considerable challenges in getting either of their respective clubs back as contenders. Obviously the ownership of each club has confidence in them until such time as they don't. Such is baseball

We know Desperate Dave is going to run off anybody in the Phillies baseball analytics department with half a brain!

Maybe this is a chance for us to restock our depleted baseball analytics department after the desperate Dave purge we endured.

if ticket sales are a priority at all, i think that the same could be said for the Sox.

20 million people will be vaccinated by Feb 1. 50 million by opening day at the least. Teams can consider vaccinated fans only.

So how does a fan prove they’re vaccinated? Do anti-vaxers have a legitimate lawsuit if they’re denied entry to a ballpark?

This theory has a “Scarlet Letter in Reverse” feel to it...
