Akil Baddoo:

CF

"Baddoo has some promising physical ingredients — speed, raw power — seasoned by high walk rates. He missed most of 2019 because he needed Tommy John in mid-May. He lacks deft barrel accuracy, but Baddoo has run well above-average walk rates to this point and he may be able to get to most of his power by hunting the right pitches, even if his swing’s a little grooved. He’s tracking like a power/OBP fourth outfielder or platoon guy."

Sounds kinda Rusney to me...

I think that the possibility of another abbreviated season and possibly another season without fans in the stands has chilled the FA market and the trade market. The economics of the game was in flux before the pandemic, which has thrown the economics into confusion. I don’t think a big name like Springer or Bauer will come off the board before the middle of January. I don’t think there will be many 3 year contracts signed before January.

I can see that, but there have been some moves like Morton for 1/15 that kind of stand out showing me that maybe the offseason isn't that different for some teams. I think teams like Pittsburgh will totally tuck into their turtle shell. The top spenders will still spend.

I wonder how many teams are in 'waiting around for bargains' mode...

If everyone is waiting around for a bargain, the market inefficiency is to get the guys at the top.

Castillo lost a lot of his power potential and slowed down as he bulked up. He still could have been a valuable 4th OFer except for those contract quirks.

Baddoo is also 4 years younger than when Castillo signed.

Sox may be waiting instead of having to overpay early to entice players to join a last-place team. Morton reportedly signed with the Braves to stay close to his home in Florida, but for a veteran looking for a chance to win, there's no comparison between Atlanta and Boston.

That's about the only move so far that showed willingness to pay top dollar to anyone, though.

Depends on what your definition is of top dollar.

Was 2/18 worth it for Mike Minor?

Drew Smyly 1/11?

There are also a few teams like the Reds in obvious payroll-shedding mode.

While true, so far they have only traded one player and non-tendered another who makes any money.

If they can move Sonny Gray or Mike Moustakas or Nick Castellanos, then the salary purge will look a lot more serious...

Garrett Whitlock

RHP

"The Yankees moved Whitlock up the ladder very quickly in 2018, and he looked like a soon-to-be backend starter or swingman sort based on his ability to locate an average sinker/slider/changeup mix. Then he blew out his UCL in the middle of last summer and had surgery. Whitlock began throwing in January but will miss most (if not all) of 2020 and is likely on track to compete for a spot on the staff in 2021, when he’ll be nearly 25."

Jacko, anything else to add?

@SPChrisHatfield

Whitlock was identified as a likely selection in today's Rule 5 Draft. Sinker/slider guy coming off of July 2019 Tommy John. May get stashed on the 60-day IL for the beginning of 2021.

So now I am streaming the Rule 5 draft.

This might mark a low point in my search for entertainment in 2020, below even that stretch where I got into Jelle's Marble Runs on Youtube...

You and me both.

Notin, would you please enter "low point" into Slack?

I typed "nadir".

After this, maybe a few marble races can provide me some excitement...
