Does the Piittsburgh trade of Josh Bell to Washington make trades of potential pitching targets Joe Musgrove and/or Jameson Taillon more or less likely?

They are not done cutting salary.

I'd like to see us make a play at Taillon & Frazier. (I'd even give them Vaz, if they gave us Stalling back.)

I'm not sure they like, need or want the likes of Chavis, Chatham, Ward, Groome, Pivetta or Duran, but I'd think one or two would be part of the deal, if it was up to me.

They'd probably want Dalbec and or DHern or Mata plus...

Don’t care. Xander stays at SS. Semien has played 2b before.

It's almost as bad as keeping Jeter at SS, when the Yanks acquired ARod.

Just don't sign Semien, then, if we won't use his best asset.

I certainly don’t agree with you lately but this is a true statement about Semian vs Xander .I guess I penciled Xander in at short thinking he may be unhappy with the move .I then look Xander the person the Player and he’s a guy who may actually go for this change as long as it brings him another Ring .I get pretty excited with Semians batand Glove at Fenway .Xander is a huge improvement over Devers Semian certainly the range is better and Arroyo at second kinda gets me up for the season .Have a question about Hunter in LF ? I would really like to cut ties with Benny and know he’s worth next to nothing ...can we then platoon Bobby D with Hunter and Devers over at First ? And what’s up with Sugano ?? Seems like the Redsox are after the lesser Japanese pitcher ? Moon the pitching market is just all over the map for me I don’t understand the market Thisbe year for pitching .On a side note what would Didi Cost on a 1 year deal ? I k ow he had TJ in 19 and had a rough 20 but maybe he rebounds ? Where would you folks play Didi ? Is Genette really cooked this bad ? Can he and arroyo split time ? Maybe catch lightning in a bottle ? I guess I’ve always loved Puig was an athlete and understand how he can rub many wrong .I would be ok with Sugano Hunter Puig and Semian Andriesse offseason ....But Moon I’d still wish we went direct for Springer .Im done with my soap box lots of questions to be answered by Bloom .

Springer would take up the whole winter spending budget as he immediately reaches post prime years. Nothing left for starting pitching or relief pitching, and no, trading Chavis and Chatham aren't bringing us squat.

It's really that simple.

Bloom isn't even making a courtesy call to the New England native.

The Red Sox reportedly are among three finalists for Japanese righthander Kohei Arihara:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/report-padres-rangers-red-sox-are-finalists-for-kohei-arihara.html

Arihara is a year older than Yusei Kikuchi was two years ago when the lefthander signed with the Seattle Mariners. Their lines from Japan's Pacific League:

KA 129 G, 836 IP, 3.74 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 3.23 K/BB. 817 H, 626 K, 194 BB

YK 195 G, 1010.2 IP, 2.77 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 2.43 K/BB, 810 H, 903 K, 371 BB

Semien’s hands are not that good and his arm is erratic. Edited by a700hitter

If we're going to make a big splash, why on Earth would we go with Springer over Bauer?

Yeah, I think Bauer is the only splash even worth considering for the Sox.

Not that now is the time to splurge on Bauer, just because he's the best big splash Free Agent out there that fits our highest need, but you are right.

Springer is wrong on so many levels.

MLBTR predicts Semien getting 1 year and 14 million. That would chew up a lot of budget room.

Except for parts of five minor league seasons, 30-year-old Marcus Semien has spent his entire life in the East Bay where he and his father were athletes at the University of California, Berkeley. Active in Black Lives Matter, Semien would replace Jackie Bradley Jr. as the only African American on the 25- or 26-man roster for the Red Sox.

Boston may be an unlikely destination.

Or not.

Jeter steady, maybe.
Give me a SS with good hands and an accurate arm. Bogey’s range isn’t that bad. Plus, he is younger than Semien and still improving.

Metrics? Bogey is much steadier.

I just checked "the metrics:"

Career:

UZR/150 (Both middle of the pack 2013-2020)

0.0 Bogey

-0.3 Semien

DRS

+13 Semien #10 of 26 who qualified

-56 Bogaerts #26 out of 26- dead last.

2016-2020 (31 SSs with 2000+ innings)

UZR/150

16. Semien +1.6

17. Bogaerts -0.1

DRS

10. Semien +19

31. Bogaerts -55

To be honest, I thought Semien was much better.

He still appears better than Bogey, but maybe they do want him as a second baseman. (Kind of expensive.)

Potent stick at 2B.

Bogey is steady, but his range is far from plus.

As for "improving," he seems up and down, to me. His best defensive season was his second one: 2015.

While jis UZR/150 has been plus the last 2.5 seasons, his DRS have gotten worse since 2017.

Potent stick at 2B.

That has to be it, but one wonders if 2019 was an outlier.

While he did have 27 HRs in 2016, his .892 OPS in 2019 was about 160 points higher than any other season.

BTW, Baseball Reference has Semien with a +6.4 dWAR and Bogey at -1.1

RF/9 (old school)

Semien 4.25

Bogey 3.80

Range Factor is worthless unless comparing two players who play the same position on the same team...

Trivia: In December 2014 the White Sox traded Marcus Semien, Chris Bassitt and two others to the Athletics for Jeff Samardzija and one other.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/semiema01.shtml#all_transactions_other

Semien finished third in the 2019 AL MVP voting while Bassitt finished eighth in the 2020 AL Cy Young voting. Samardzija posted a 4.96 ERA in 32 starts with the White Sox before entering free agency.

It doesn't make sense that Bloom would view Semien as the new shortstop for the club he's resetting for years of sustained contention. The guy just isn't a huge upgrade defensively over Bogaerts; if the Sox are seriously going to upgrade at short, bump X to another infield position -- and make the splash the Nation will be demanding after another year of mediocrity in the standings and remotes (we can't even say turnstiles at this point) -- then there are superior options soon available in Lindor, Story, Baez and Correa.

Semien doesn't make sense, but maybe he makes cents. I hope I'm wrong, and Boston is hoping he'll play second.

Are there even any rumors of us being interested in Semien?

Sox might be interested, and he would be a nice addition, but I think someone else will make a comparable offer to keep him at shortstop as opposed to the one the Sox make to move him to 2b.

Now a deal with Cincy for, say Tyler Mahle and Mike Moustakas might be more along the lines of something I expect...
