Not sure we should be trading a Top 5 catcher on a reasonable contract, with no real replacement in sight.

Eh.

Why do we need a top 5 catcher with no pitching staff in sight?

I hope you are correct. If he could also move Moreland, Martinez and whoever else (Not homegrown) that has value that would be a good thing!

Whether you like it or not, they’ll move homegrown players in the right deal...

Call me crazy, but I'm holding out hope that Bloom can address that to a certain degree before 2021.

But if Vazquez can bring back a solid pitching prospect or two from the Rays, sure, that makes sense.

The infamous baseballtradevalues.com does accept a trade of Christian Vazquez to Tampa for Shane Baz (BA#71 this year)...

You have to listen to all offers, but Vaz certainly should be considered a core players along with Bogaerts, Verdugo and Devers. I would also keep inexpensive players on one year contracts that could help us be respectable in 2021, while the rebuilding is in process.

I would keep Vaz. There has been talk about going after Realmuto, who is really good, but how much will he cost? I think Vaz just makes more sense. It's the same feeling I have about trading Bogaerts, then going after Lindor.

Don't trade really good players on reasonable contracts to get the 'superstar' who will cost an arm and a leg.

We are on the same page when it comes to this trade deadline and our hopes for next year.

I've said before that in order to trade some of these guys, it would have to feel like a clear win for the Sox. Not just a decent trade, but one that makes me feel like Bloom had to do it.

Baseballtradevalues.com accepted the following trade:

Tampa gets: Christian Vazquez, Jackie Bradley

Boston gets: Shane Baz, Brent Honeywell, Kevin Kiermaier, Mike Zunino

Zunino ($4.5 mill) and Bradley ($11mill)are both expiring contracts that balance some money but hopefully don’t push Boston over the tax limit. Taking Kiermaier replaces Bradley and saves Tampa $25.6 mill in 2021 and 2022 (minus the money taken back). And the Sox get two elite pitching prospects, although Honeywell has legitimate injury concerns...

I look at some of our guys and think of Bill Parcells saying. (you are what your record says you are). Results do count. How could we trade guys like JDM or Beni? They are not getting the results that their salaries would warrant. What other GM would take them? The only few players we could trade, we probably should keep with few exceptions.

Baseball is a game of ups and downs, though. JDM has been one of the best hitters in baseball the last few years. He could rebound at any time.

And Sox have no catcher for 2021. Pass.

I'm thinking if another GM wanted JD, he'd look past this year's performance. JD is a really good hitter. Not sure what has him so out of sorts this year.

But on your thought, we certainly don't want to be selling low on any of our players.

I don't think we need to ask why ANYONE is out of sorts this summer!

IMO, the new video rules have really messed with his head.

His swing slowing down, aka jim rice syndrome, is what I see as the problem.

I suspect the Red Sox are stuck with JD. No one wants a DH type making all that money and it is possible that he is in decline. Too much money, too much uncertainty for a guy who can't play the field. If the Red Sox could trade JD for a bag of balls, just to get rid of the contract, I think they do it, but no one will take JD on.

They could add some cash and find takers for JD.

The learning curve for a new catcher is likely too long for Vaz to make a big impact with a new team for 2020.

I think the Rays like defensive catcher, so I'm not sure about Vaz as a fit.

Maybe we roll the dice on Wong.

I'm not sure Vaz is part of our plans for 2022 and beyond, so if a good deal comes along, I'd send him packing.

I think not being able to view his ABs during the game has gotten into his head. He is one to study his ABs and make adjustments during the game. Devers has mentioned this as well and he is struggling as well. There might be something to it.

You are right.

We sometimes tend to forget that the players are human beings and are dealing with life like the rest of us are.

Yes, he has talked about that more than once. Also, he said something about not liking batting in the #2 spot because he didn't get to see the pitches thrown to the first two batters in the game. He is such a professional hitter that I'm surprised he is being affected by that as much as he is.
