Stock may not know where his pitches are going when the ball leaves his hands, but if he figures out command and control, he could be a major league pitcher!

Stock has been trying to master control and command for eight years now.

Sure he might magically grasp the concept now in his eighth professional season, but it’s not very likely..

Then we take Leiter with the #2 pick

The way it sounds right now, we won't be picking until about #7 or #8, based on Manfred's 'formula'.

I really hate that guy.

With the mini-dramas of the short season trade deadline now past, and the Win 1-Lose2 season down to just 25 more miserable games, the bloom is fully off this 2020 season. The level of interest in the current bunch of players is below Zero.

Robinson Leyer, IMO, is the perfect poster boy for this year. A 27 year old making his very first appearance on a major league mound. Got 3 outs, gave up 2 hits, a walk, an earned run to score his 9.00 ERA. And Robinson was just one of 24 throwers who took the mound in the first 35 games, 22 if you don't count the mop-ups by Plawecki and Peraza.

Surprised Chaim still had Leyer's phone number.

I can't see any reason why Manfred wouldn't "allow" the worst teams this year to get the top picks -- just like last year's worst teams already did this year; why should doormats from 2019 get rewarded twice?

If he was smart, he'd let the Red Sox get a higher pick anyway, since they are one of his flagship/big markets and when Boston is good, it's good for MLB. That may sound elite from a spoiled fan, but ask Manfred why he swept the Yankee cheating report under the rug? Unless he's a closet NY fan, it was for the good of his league.

It just shows that he doesn't believe this is a real season either.

I don't get it either. I suppose Manfred is trying to avoid having teams intentionally tanking in this season with no fans, just to get the #1 pick. I don't know. I don't know if it's still the case, but I read a couple weeks back that there are teams who could make the playoffs this year and still have a high pick based on Manfred's plan.

And yes, I've been wondering about that sealed letter that was supposed to be unsealed. Whatever happened to that?

I have to say I understand the rationale behind not basing the draft order solely on this abbreviated and weird season.

We should probably just be thankful it counts for the tax reset.

Do tell.

There is that, and it will help considerably to begin the reload. Still it will be questionable through the next several months as to what the 2021 season will look like at the outset

Yes, resetting the tax only really matters, if it means we will eventually use the saved tax payments to obtain more or better players.

With our draft position possibly falling (or has it been decided, yet?), our longer term future may be negatively impacted, but this will be a very difficult draft. We may still end up striking gold, and having a top 7 or 8 pick likely increases our odds of striking gold. Surely, picking first or second improves those odds, but we'll see.

The increased IFA pool money could be bid, as well.

My understanding is Arauz is a rule 5 player and we have to keep him with the team or return him. He has some value so we will no doubt keep him through the 2020 season, but I can't see him being with the team in 2021. I not impressed with his 2nd base skills and he has plate disciple but doesn't offer a lot offensively. Time to thin down the second base options and perhaps get a more capable player

He's just 21.

It's my understanding he does not have to stay on the 26 man roster, next year to stay.

Keep him in AAA, until he shows he he will or will not make it.

With our weak 40 man roster, it's not like he's holding down someone better.

He’s also only 21 and played all of 28 games at AA. He’ll be at Pawtucket next year, probably learning 2B. He’s been a ss most of his minor league career (that’s where he played when I saw him in 2017 and 2018 with our local Class A Astros affiliate).

He looks like a utility type guy but I’d let him mature a little before totally giving up on him.

Perhaps one indication of how far the RS have fallen is that its most ardent fans are now seriously discussing draft order (you know, like they do in the mid-west somewhere or on boards of tanking NBA teams.)

It’s the price you pay for hiring Dombrowski. You got 2018. But the fallout is what DD always leaves

Like most of the Sox utility infielder crowd.

Arauz can go to Pawtucket next season. At least, unlike most Rule 5 players, he is getting actual playing time in his year. Too often a Rule 5 player loses a year of development while gaining a year of service time...

Nah, Henry approved all of those deals.

Sure he did. But Dave has to wear them, unless we think they were ordered by Henry/Werner.

He approved them because he hired Dombrowski to make those types of decisions and trusted him to get positive results.

But that didn't happen, possibly because he underestimated Sale's injury and he was a little too into Eovaldi Hype...

Henry wears them as well. That's my only point. You can't let ownership off the hook for getting themselves into financial trouble.
